Jocketty's plan

Fay has a post up, saying that he thinks the Reds should blow up the team and go with a youth movement, but that Castellini won’t go for that. He wants to win now, not in 2009 or 2010.

You know, I was thinking about this question today

If the Reds continue to suck this season, would you consider at least shopping Harang at the deadline?

All the things that make him the Reds most untouchable player (dominance, contract, durability) also make him the most valuable trading chip the team has.

The thought had literally never occurred to me before, and I’m not sure whether it’s even worth discussing in the hypothetical, but I thought I’d throw it out there.

Brendon, there's nothing wrong with lying to women. Or the government. Or parents. Or God.

by Man Mountain on Apr 26, 2008 7:48 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Sure, you consider everything

But I think it’s almost impossible to get comparable value in return. I think you’ve gotta hold on to him. He helps you win now, and helps you win in the future. He’s a superstar quality player that Jocketty is so fond of. Gotta keep him.

by Brendanukkah on Apr 26, 2008 7:53 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

im not entirely opposed to it

but the fact that he is seemingly our one stable pitcher makes me want to move bronson instead. He’s not going to get as big of a bounty, but surely he can be worth a good catcher.

A deal I thought about this morning that might make sense (or might not be balanced, I’m not really sure) would be Bronson and Jr. for Jeff Clement. The Ms just signed Johjima for another three years, so it seems they either want clement to rot as a backup or move him. Moving Jr. would only affect us for this year, so in essence it would be two or three years of bronson plus the compensatory picks we would get for letting junior go at the end of the year for six years of clement at a discount.

I can’t figure out if this is even or not. On one hand, you don’t trade your top prospect for a slightly above-average starting pitcher. On the other hand, a team with arroyo as the No. 4 man in their rotation would have to be pretty good, and there’s the probability of resigning junior at a discount for the twilight of his career. Throw in a couple B prospects with Clement, and which team would this trade favor?

Don't know how accurate, but

I’d heard a lot of rumors that the Mariners were thinking of moving Clement to 1B. Sexson’s contract is up at the end of this year.

by Brendanukkah on Apr 26, 2008 8:02 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I've heard that Clement is not that great behind the plate

It’s just what I’ve heard, but I imagine that might be why they are willing to sign Johjima. They probably want to put him somewhere on the field. BTW, he’s DESTROYING the PCL right now (.368/.494/.676 with 6 doubles and 5 HR). He’s still only played catcher and DH so far.

You're drowning in the past, Mike, and I've got your life jacket right here. It's called the 80s and it's gonna be around forever.

I don't think Arroyo gets you a good catcher

Good catchers are probably the scarcest players now.

There’s a reason the Yankees signed Chad Moeller…

No sell Harangataun

He’ll be a star for a number of years to come. Pitching is so valuable The reason the thought had never occurred to you before is because you just experienced a totally irrational moment – but now its gone. Wait until you hit 60 – these moments begin to occur with a sublte and increased frequency with age.

Maybe Belizzle will have more success tonight against a AAA lineup...

after all, he did well in Louisville earlier.

In case you have noticed

The CF has still batted lead-off every game this year. Even in the games where both Freel and Hopper were in the lineup, whoever was playing CF batted lead-off – Freel on 4/13, Hopper on 4/17. And a middle infielder has batted 2nd in all but 2 games (Freel was playing 3B and batting second, and Hopper played LF and batted 2nd).

Oh, and Dunn leads the Reds with 64 (out of 93) plate appearances with the bases empty and he’s led off the inning more than any player on the team (27 times). Clearly he’s the problem with the offense.

The Dunn portion was really a response to the people at Fay's blog

who all think that the first move to be made should be get rid of Dunn. I’d post it there, but I’m afraid just being on that blog might infect my computer with a panic.

Well if he escapes the 1st inning with only one run scored...

He will still lower his ERA from 11.57, since one run in an inning is “only” a 9.00 ERA.

The Baseball Cube

Just in case anyone’s wondering…my sponsorship banner is back up at Bubba Crosby’s Baseball Cube page.

For some reason they took it down, and I had a heck of a time contacting them about it. The “contact us” forms at their site weren’t working (perhaps because they’re doing a major re-design), and I didn’t get any reply to messages sent via e-mail. I was starting to wonder if they were losing interest in the site or something. But I e-mailed them again yesterday, with the bill they sent me last time as well as receipt for my payment. (Which I probably should have done earlier.) And Gary replied promptly this time, and was very nice. He apologized, said it was their mistake, and said he’d give me some extra time on my sponsorship. Very cool.

Just thought I should mention that all is well now, since I posted here griping about it last week. I really like The Baseball Cube. It’s run by a couple of guys in Canada, and must be a ton of work. I hope my kvetching earlier didn’t discourage anyone from sponsoring a page there. (I think Matt Belisle’s page is still available…)
