Ross Activated, Hopper to DL
Well, it sounds as if Walt Jocketty has made his first roster move, albeit a small one. Sounds like a phantom injury to me.
Today the Reds reinstated C David Ross from the 15-Day DL, and placed OF Norris Hopper on the 15-Day DL retroactive to Saturday with right elbow inflammation. Hopper is eligible to be reinstated on 5-5.
I figured it would be Hopper being optioned to AAA. Maybe Walt was just wanting to buy some time to figure things out.

About fucking time
Hopper was quickly becoming the OF, speedy version of Juan Castro. Good move.

I don't think it's a phantom injury
The Reds could’ve optioned Hopper to AAA without consequence and that would’ve been an opportunity to get some at-bats, which is something teams generally like. It may be an exaggeration of an injury, but I’m guessing Hopper’s elbow really is bothering him.

I agree
Dusty likes what he hears from Hopper too. So he wouldn’t have stashed him on the bench all of this time just because.

Yeah, I thought about that too
I just wander if they are trying to figure some things out without using an option.

Hopper was quiickly becoming the 4th CF even though he is the best hitter (i’ll stand by that comment).
Good to see we are still keeping faith in Mendoza-line Ross who was even less competent in his rehab stints in A & AAA ball (hitting 7-for-41).

Norris Hopper is our best hitter?
That honor is usually reserved for someone who can hit the ball out of the infield grass…

I think he means out of the 4 center field options.

I can't wait to come back to read the responses to this Hopper comment.

Do you really want to doubt this argument? I am not saying Hopper is above average, but let’s compare:
Patterson OPS+
2006: 94
2007: 80
Freel OPS+
2006: 93
2007: 67
Hairston OPS+
2006: 36 (!)
2007: 42 (!)
Hopper OPS+
2006: 127
2007: 94
Small sample sizes, but you can’t compare anything else because that’s Hopper’s entire ML career. Mix that in the fact that he’s our best bunter, plays solid D, and can run the bases just as well as any of them, and I don’t see where any argument lies.
Wow, that was easier than I thought.

Meh.
If you’re going to trot out Hopper’s 127 OPS+ in 39 ABs in 2006, you might as well include his 49 OPS+ in 25 ABs this season.
His BABIP last year was an insane .367 and 40% of his hits were infield hits, the overwhelming majority to the right side of the infield. A telling stat is that Hopper had 10 hits with men on 2B last year, yet knocked only 3 of them in.
His ability to bunt and play okay defense make him effective in a very select set of circumstances. Making him the starter probably nullifies whatever advantage he gives you in the long run. He’ll start to look as pedestrian as the others.
That Hopper might be the “best hitter” of the bums the Reds are running out to center is more an indictment of this team than a boon to Norris.

Those are all fair points, and I wasn’t aware that his BABIP was so high.
All in all though, the point best made was the last sentence, which is the way I was leaning with my initial post.

Personally
I think for a “speed” guy, Hopper’s defense sucks. He badly misplays a lot of balls.
