KRIVSKY FIRED
Wayne Krivsky fired, to be replaced by Walt Jocketty.
Krivsky's gone, to be replaced by Jocketty, I'm assuming through at least the end of the year. I'll see if I can dig up anything else.
You have to wonder what changes Walt Jocketty will look to make. He WAS the GM who put STL over the top by bringing in McGwire. so there's that I guess.
But how well has the Cardinals farm system produced major league players recently? Other than Pujols and Wainwright, nothing really comes to mind.
Thoughts anyone? Can he take us where we want to go?

I think I'm in the
“turnover every 2 years is not a good way to manage” camp. I was starting to come around on Krivsky. He’s not great, but I was just starting to see his plan. And now Jocketty is gonna come in and implement a whole new plan that hopefully won’t involve trading all our youth for veterans.

I guess I could take Wayne or leave Wayne but...
I have a baaad feeling that this is some kind of catalyst in the “must win now” equation.
Nice knowing ya, Homer.

I wonder if Bob's frustrated at the roster construction too
It’s kind of a mess right now. 4 guys who play CF. No real back up at SS and the actual SS doesn’t have a lot of experience there in the first place. Not a lot of quality on the bench. The only thing on the MLB roster that Krivsky seems to have gotten right is the pitching is most improved, though the bullpen is definitely shaky still.

Having to eat the money given to Cormier, Stanton, and Castro couldn’t have been good for his future employment. And with Arroyo and BP and the team in general struggling, Bob might be getting itchy.

Wow
Didn’t see this one coming at all. I mean, yeah, Jocketty was lurking, but it’s still really early in the season and I couldn’t point to a specific (recent) fire-able offense.
Slyde might be on to something with too many bad contract extensions (Hi, Ryan Freel!). Maybe it was just a general inability to get a competent bullpen, since that’s what the majority of his moves revolved around. Strange.
I hope this works out, but I really would have been okay with Krivsky sticking around for a few more years.

I forgot about Freel
And a short leash may work as a motivational tactic, but it doesn’t work as real strategy. Two years simply is not enough time for a GM to actually implement any kind of a plan. And now we’re going to be starting all over again.

FWIW, the heads on WLW just said that supposedly Bob preferred Hatteberg over Votto.
But they were speaking in the past tense and the were speaking as if “only a dummie would not like Votto now.”
Also, the talked to Big Bob himself and he downplayed the Castro and Stanton contracts and echoed some “Losing is unacceptable” sentiment of Tracy Jones. All told, the interview was pretty bland and unrevealing. But you did get the distinct impression that Bob thinks that a 9-12 start is much much worse than a 12-9 start would have been. Odd.

They won't trade Griffey until at least after 600. And I doubt they trade KGJ trade at all.
And this is not the right point in the season to trade Dunn. The market is not hot with contenders trying to make a playoff push and excuse me for saying so but Dunn hasn’t been Dunntastic yet.

Other things I remember about Jocketty
We were going after Scott Rolen pretty aggressively, and looked like we might get him. Then Jocketty and the Cardinals ponied up and got him instead. Much as I liked Aaron Boone, it would have been nice to have Rolen. I give him credit for getting Jim Edmonds as well. I think he doesn’t get credit for Pujols, because no one saw him coming. Although if we draft the best right-handed hitter of a generation in the 26th round, I’ll take that back.
Am I wrong in thinking the Cardinals rotation was often made up of glorified reclamation projects? Chris Carpenter, Woody Williams, one hit wonders like Kent Bottenfield and Jason Simontacchi… I think any pitching success has to mostly be credited to Dave Duncan, and I worry about what would happen if a strategy like that were implemented with Dick Pole at the helm. Hopefully Jocketty can realize that Cueto, Volquez, and Bailey are going to make a helluva core for a long time to come, and he’ll have the sense to build around that.
I guess the other interesting thing will be to see how Jocketty and Dusty get along. They’re both largely old school baseball men who have been around a long time with other organizations. Will Dusty still have the pull to land a Corey Patterson or a Jerry Hairston? If he doesn’t, is that a good thing?
As the saying goes, may you live in interesting times.
by Brendanukkah on Apr 23, 2008 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I can't shake the feeling
that Jocketty had a lot of good luck in St. Louis. Most of his good teams were real stars-and-scrubs outfits, and while the stars didn’t exactly fall into his lap they were more of a product of good fortune than good planning – the Carpenter signing, Edmonds revitalizing his career after 30, outstanding swan songs from Will Clark and Larry Walker, Weaver in the ‘06 playoffs, and of course Pujols. This doesn’t seem like a repeatable model for building a winning club. I’m sure you can say that good luck is critical for any successful team, but I just can’t fight the feeling that Jocketty is only a so-so GM who’s good at closing deadline deals but poor in the player development area. Glancing at the list below of the Cardinals’ drafts gives me pause, but it seems like every good team they had was just … lucky. I don’t know.

Bob must have seen my avatar!
It’s a move that you don’t see coming unless you start looking.
What’s a GM’s job?
1. Construct a good roster. As has been pointed out, Krivsky failed.
2. Sign players to adventatous contracts. While the Harang/Arroyo contracts looked good at the time (though Arroyo’s less so today), and the last Dunn contract looked reasonable, that’s about it. Too many 2 year contracts to roster fodder; too much money to guys who’re pretty replacable. Again, Krivsky failed.
3. Don’t piss off the boss. Two-plus years of losing after Bob’s professed desire to “win now”. Again, Krivsky failed.
We should have seen it. The signs were there.
Often wrong, never uncertain.

GM's Job
Build up the minors: Passed. It wasn’t all him, but the Reds have a lot more depth than they had 5 years ago and he gets some credit for that. His drafts weren’t pristine, but I’d say they were better than average.

yeah
he got lucky as hell that that dart stuck, but i’d call it a 50-50 shot that daryl thompson is the best part of that trade. Austin Kearns and Felipe Lopez for Daryl Thomson and Bill Bray still isn’t a good deal, but at least we have a couple pieces to look forward to.

Not crediting him for the The Trade whatsoever
even if it turns out to be a flop on both sides, it was still a bad deal at the time.
My point was more that Krivsky has played a very big role in adding a lot of depth to the minors, even if DanO gets most of the credit for the top players on the list.

Wow. Even I do not like this very much.
As bad as Wayne has been at times, there have been some steps in the right direction. The shitty extensions have to be a factor, but I’m now extremely worried about Homer and Edwin being on the way out. Jocketty has always had really strong defensive teams, and I just can’t see that boding well for Edwin or a Dunn re-signing. I also get the feeling that a big move is in the works simply for the sake of making a big move, and that might mean a Homer trade. I’m not opposed to trading him, but I don’t think the market is there to get a particularly high-impact guy.
I’m not sad that Wayne is gone and I don’t think we’ll miss his particular GMing abilities, but I’m just worried about the implications of a move this early in the season when most of the Reds problems so far really aren’t Wayne’s fault at all, just a result of some early season suckage out of players who aren’t likely to continue doing so.
On the bright side, I think Votto has done a good job entrenching himself on the team in the past couple of weeks, so I would be surprised if he were traded, and I would have to think Bruce is still just as untouchable. But I’m just not sure what’s out there for Jocketty to do that would be all that advantageous for us.

After 21 Games?
There is nothing that happened in the first 1/8 of this season that should not have been anymore of a clue than what occurred last season. I just figured they would keep him on. Not that Jocketty is going to be better. The Cardinals are not the Reds and he did not leave St. Louis on the greatest of terms. Then again, if this is what it takes to strong-arm Dusty to never bat the Patterson-Harriston Out Machine Twins at lead-off, I am all for it.

The timing shocked me, I knew it was going to happen just not this soon. I wonder if the Josh Fogg fiasco had something to do with it. I mean Dusty hasn’t come out and said he doesn’t understand why some players are on the roster but he has put a lot of hints out there.

Not sure you can really call Josh Fogg a fiasco
He certainly hasn’t been good for us this season, but he’s a decent enough pitcher, coming off a World Series appearance. He pitched decently in spring training (better than Homer) and won the job. Affeldt was also brought in under similar conditions, and didn’t get a job in the rotation. But the biggest thing is that Fogg is only making $1 million this year. For that small amount of money, you’re allowed some leeway if your move doesn’t work out.

I meant more the way Dusty was going on that he didn’t even know Fogg was going to be on his roster.

Fogg was pretty bad....
....then again I remember the Dave Williams implosion. As much as I disliked Kriv at times, it’s not his fault that the Reds gutted their minor league system and have not developed a starting pitcher of note since Tom Browning. Those problems long predated him and goes back to when everyone’s favorite dog owner was haunting Riverfront. I am still amazed that he allowed Bowden to deal him some gimps in the Lopez-Kearns trade, which to me was what I assumed would have cost him his job last year. I assumed he would just stay after that, but I guess Bob operates on a different clock.

Heh.
From the AP writeup:
Krivsky showed a fondness for signing older pitchers and making a flurry of trades. One of his most expensive decisions was giving left-handed reliever Mike Stanton a two-year, $5.5 million deal, far more than anyone else was offering. The tight-budget Reds got rid of him during spring training even though he was still owed $3.5 million.
by Gray on Apr 23, 2008 12:44 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I've been wondering how the Reds came up with the $3M number for Patterson.
Could it be that that contract was the one that sealed Wayne’s fate. I understand that Dusty brought Patterson in to ST but that doesn’t mean that the eventual contract was Dusty’s work.

Damn
I think this is a mistake—unless, of course, the Reds turn it around and make the playoffs. Then we’ll remember this day in a much different light. And I have to say, although I think Castellini jumped the gun, I do prefer that they make the move now, before the sesaon got away. Why fire Krivsky at the All-Star break if we’re ten under? What good would that do, except provide a boost when it’s too late?
So, roster moves?
So, I see Fogg being cut and Ross taking his roster spot. I see Hatteberg going as soon as Gonzalez returns, with Kepp and Votto sharing time at 1B. I see Bailey coming before June 1, perhaps at the expense of Belisle. I think Mercker may get cut and Bray may come up. I see Daryl Thompson in AAA soon.
What else?

Krivsky's behavior drove at least this long time Reds fan away from the team.
Maybe it seems like a small thing, but I so hated Krivsky I had trouble following the Reds over the last two years. Just as I can watch no movie, no matter how good it may be, that stars Tom Cruise, I could not follow the Reds as long as they were fronted by Krivsky. Krivsky is truely a nasty, lying, small-minded, selfish, amoral person who also happened to be a poor baseball GM.

Cruise
Before the whole Scientology clambake I used to defend Cruise (you may have noticed I tend to only advocate for things most people hate-true hipster 4 life). Actors as powerful as Cruise can be considered auteurs-he can greenlight any project by attaching his name—and he seems to choose thematically consistent roles. Yes, he always plays the cocky young upstart who’s mentored by an older father figure, but he does it so well (this makes him a great pairing with Paul Thomas Anderson because all of his movies are about this).
Most impressive is the way Cruise sought out and worked with every major director working during his era—Spielberg, Kubrick, Anderson, Barry Levinson, Coppola, DePalma, Cameron Crowe, Ridley Scott, Sidney Pollack, Robert Redford, Michael Mann… um, Rob Reinar. Most stars of his magnitude work with a pet director or avoid working under someone who will hold more clout on set. This suggests to me that he’s serious about his craft and not just a pretty boy.
But yeah, after the Scientology stuff came to a head I have a hard time watching him in movies I once liked. It’s hard to shake him telling Matt Lauer, “I’ve read the medical journals! Not just scripts!”

Good stuff.
It will be interesting to see what path his career takes over the next ten, twenty or thirty years. It’s not like he’s going to go away. And it’s not likely that he’ll keep making Mission: Impossibles and such.
You got me thinking and I checked out his filmography.
I think I liked Minority Report more than most folks. And Collateral was much better than I had anticipated. (I might suggest it for the lover of cool movies who happens to hate Tom Cruise. Just a suggestion.)
All that said, here’s my Tom Cruise time capsule for the masses:
Risky Business
Color of Money
Rain Man
I don’t love Rain Man but if one assumes that Top Gun, Jerry Maguire, A Few Good Men and perhaps the MI’s are the ones that are always going to be with us, I’ll go ahead and throw Rain Man into my vault. (Valeria Golina is just enough to tip the scales.)
Here’s Cole Trickle’s complete filmography.
And I haven’t seen Born on the Fourth of July since it was in theaters. Can anybody comment on how its aged?

Nasty and Lying
He treated everyone around him who did not fall behind him in a very disrespectful and dismissive manner. You have presumably read about the long time employees who left the Reds saying they were treated like crap by Krivsky when they did not fall in as “yes men.” Krivsky was a perfect storm of arrogance and ignorance.
Krivsky lied throughout his tenure as the GM. He would say one thing, and do another. He would say he was going to do one thing, and then not do it. He would never, never, never accept any form of personal responsibility for his many mistakes. He never admitted to a mistake. If you asked him today, what decision that you made as GM of the Reds do you most regret, ten to one he would reply, "None of them. I regret nothing."
If judged based on the character of his soul, he truly was a worthless being as GM of the Reds. He rises perhaps to the level of “somewhat below average” if judged on the basis of his ability to manage a major league baseball organization.
I followed the Reds daily from 1983 until 2005. I started breaking from the team on the day of the July 13th massacre. I found so little joy in the Reds while they were managed by Krivsky I did something I thought I never would in 2006, I found a different MLB team to root for. It just hurt too much to watch a team I so loved for so long led by that worthless paranoid piece of Nixonian crap in a sweater vest. I just found it healthier to move on. Maybe I will find my way back now. The Reds are deep in me. I grew up with them.
Amoral does not mean immoral, it means lacking a sense of morality. That word exactly describes Krivsky. He is not immoral, he simply has no concept that truth or honesty or integrity have any intrinsic value. These concepts are only of value to him if they can be used to his advantage. Otherwise they are just empty words. That is how Krivsky managed the Reds.
The only difference between Sweater Pants and Leather Pants is the sanctimonious attitude that Krivsky adopts. At least Bowden owns up to his character. Machiavelli can be tolerated when he wins – not when he loses and pretends that his mistakes were all forgivable because he was always on the side of the angels.

It is the Royals
I moved to Kansas in 2004 and now follow the Royals. My first couple years here I watched the Reds games every night on MLB.com, but the second half of 2006 I just found it too depressing to push on, even though the Reds were still in the race for the division until the last day. Not that the Royals were a better team than the Reds, but they were local, and even back in 2006 I had more faith in their ability to improve than I did of the Reds while Krivsky was in charge. Rooting for the Royals was harmless and kinda fun. I found rooting for the Reds at the same time frustrating and depressing.
And I will own up to it. I do let my anger at Krivsky get the better of me. I can’t explain why. It just happens. Just every bit of the man grates on me.
I am pretty well 100% certain that you will never read a story about how much Krivsky is missed by those who worked with him in Cincinnati.

Yes, Bowden is an SOB.
but I found him easier to live with because at least he owned up to his behavior. Bowden was up front about willing to act like an SOB if it gave the team an edge. Bowden also communicated much more openly with the fans and community.
I guess the difference is between a narcissistic, semi-competent dealer and a paranoid, sanctimonious, semi-competent liar with delusions of infallibility. I found the former easier to live with.
Bowden was also willing to work with people who disagreed with him. Krivsky treated the organization as a private club. You either fell in line and agreed with him, or he marginalized and humiliated you until you left on your own accord. It was his pattern. No wonder his firing surprised him. He wouldn’t allow anyone around him willing to offer an honest critique of his performance and management style.
Judging by his post-firing comments, I gather Krivsky has learned nothing by the whole experience. He is what he is.

was anyone else coming around on wayne?
i was starting to think he had a clue. His last interview on FSN was particularly telling, I thought. He was very candid, which was new, and he was making lots of sense (saying our offensive struggles were do to a small sample size, among other things). He said we would consider keeping three catchers on the roster, but certainly not for the whole season as that was not an ideal makeup. I was getting the feeling that he was a guy who was coming into his own as a GM. I think we’ll see him have more success somewhere else.
In the end, though, I guess The Trade and signings like Stanton and Cormier did him in.

I was coming around on Wayne...
But when Big Bob hired old buddy Jock before the season, the writing was on the wall for poor Wayne. Sure there were some stinkers (trades, contracts), but the farm system is deeper and Kriv managed to acquire Phillips, Keppinger, Hamilton/Volquez, Burton, Arroyo and Bako for basically nothing.
I also question the timing. Bob HAD to know, as soon as he hired Jocketty, that Kriv was on the way out, so either fire him right then and there, before the season, or give it most of the year (at least a chance! not 21 games) to see if it could be turned around.
Maybe Jocketty was starting to poke around for the next full-time gig and Bob wanted to lock him up. Who knows.
by bengalred on Apr 23, 2008 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I kind of got the sense
That Jocketty has just been using this time to learn the system and become acquainted with what we do and don’t have. Sort of like when Dusty came in and kept saying he didn’t know anything about the players on the team. Well, Jocketty’s had an incubation period where he can learn and not have to do anything like add players or make trades without having a reasonable grasp of what he has or what he needs. Now he does. Now he can be GM.
I could be way off on this, though.

from Fay
I just spoke briefly to Reds CEO Bob Castellini. I asked him why they made the move with Wayne Krivsky now.
“We’re not winning. We haven’t started well. It was time.”
He said the move was a difficult one.
“He gave it his all. He’s a good guy.”
Castellini will have more to say at the 4 p.m. press conference.
I think the thing that did Krivsky in was contracts. Mike Stanton, Rheal Cormier, Juan Castro. I’ve also heard that he and Walt Jocketty were not getting along great.
Krivsky and I had our differences. But I liked the guy. He’ll land on his feet.

Players
From Lance’s blog, apparently the players expected it eventually, just not the timing. Hey, perhaps Wayne will come over to PBS?
by Kirkendall on Apr 23, 2008 1:37 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Krivsky was good and bad...
I must admit I was starting to be hopeful because the young players are really exciting. Anybody who can have a stable of prospects that starts with Cueto, Bruce, Volquez, Votto and Bailey with real depth in A and AA has to be doing something right, fixation on old relievers notwithstanding. I would take the occasional Stanton signing in exchange for a minor league system that is this good. As much as I have been on his case in the past, I think firing him at this juncture, just as he was seeming to “get it,” was a mistake. Either you fire the guy right after The Trade (at the end of the season) for gross negligence or you give him at least until the end of this year to see if his plan worked. Don’t pull the plug now.
My hope is that Jocketty doesn’t do another Haren-for-Mulder trade somewhere along the way. The Cards’ system has not been good. My hope is that this doesn’t ruin a good thing by drafting poorly in future years and/or trading everyone away for veterans that may or may not help with “winning now.”
The good:
Not trading any of the big five for Erik Bedard or any other overpriced veteran starter.
Trading for Arroyo.
Extending Harang and Arroyo.
Extending Dunn until this season.
Picking up BP for a PTBNL.
Picking up Hamilton in the Rule V and trading him for a slightly-used Volkswagen.
Trading for David Ross.
Acquiring Jared Burton (jury is still out).
Generally drafting well (other than as noted below).
Generally staying out of the way of young players’ development (except perhaps for EdE).
Signing Hatteberg.
Signing Francisco Cordero.
Keeping David Weathers (jury is still out).
The bad:
The Trade (although looking back it might not have been a complete catastrophe, only a disaster).
Signing Stanton.
Signing Cormier.
Three Catchers.
Trading for and then re-signing Casto.
Extending Freel (although pre-concussion it looked OK).
Stubbs instead of Lincecum (not as bad as before, but still bad).
Giving away Brendan Harris for nothing.
Allowing Chad Moeller to be on a 40-man roster.
At least it wasn't Grady Little.

I’m not sure what to make of this decision. I know that Jocketty is known as an anit-SABR guy so that won’t be much of a change from the current. Maybe this is the old man’s way of saying “OK, screw it!” and getting ready to clean house (Patterson, Freel, and such)-not sure.

Castellini eating money
Castellini ate too much money recently. Plus, some of the bench issues are hampered by $million contracts on the bench. Hatteberg, Castro, Valentin are all over $1 million. Freel over $3 million. Throw in Stanton and Patterson, and that’s a lot of money on players whose performance is deserving near ML minimum.
by rojosoto on Apr 23, 2008 1:47 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
I think Castellini is willing to take some hits financially but this seems like he’s really eating a lot of contracts this year. Hopefully he’s found his man and second, that Jocketty wants to win as badly as his boss does.
Just holding my breath that he let’s these younger pitcher develop and keeps this rotation together.

to tell you the truth
your last two sentences seem to be in conflict to me. The Reds aren’t ready to win this year. Their best chance was for the rest of the division to be like it has the last two seasons and for the Reds to play a little over their heads. If win now is the M.O., then they aren’t going to let the young guys figure it out at the MLB level.

I agree with you when you say that the best scenario would be if
Their best chance was for the rest of the division to be like it has the last two seasons and for the Reds to play a little over their heads.
I am just saying that I hope Castellini got his man – someone with the same baseball ethos. It just seems like Castellini got the wrong man in Krivsky and that their personal M.O.s clashed.
I also think that Castellini went with Baker as a big name hire and that the Krivsky-Baker tandem seemed to be pulling in different directions.
Personally, I’d like to see the GM-go-round stop. Let’s see what this rotation can do. Let them play.
From a business standpoint Castellini has shown he’s willing to eat some dough and not hold onto someone who isn’t producing just because they have a contract.
It's a Horns' world. Even Aggies play hoops with a burnt orange ball.

Possible sticking points between them ...
Dunn, Baker, Castro, Cormier, Freel, Stanton, Majewski, Fogg … Wayne made his share of mistakes, and he tended to sign them too long. But I would hang Patterson on Baker. I would look for a move on Dunn, even if it is just not signing him. He may be untradable. But it hurts having that dead zone in the power part of the lineup. Stats don’t tell the whole story – RISP and LOB are a large part of it too, and a walk doesn’t knock in runs.

I hope this isn’t one of you guys:
Don’t forget letting Cantu go – we could have a 120RBI guy at 3B NOW. Now we have Hairston when the consummate leadoff hitter sits the bench and can play CF (Hopper), and led the league in hitting in Aug/Sep 07. Dusty isn’t any better than Krivsky.
It’s funny how when it comes to something like RBI, if a player does something one season, that’s who they are forever. But then Dunn drives in 100 runs in 3 of the last 4 years and he is not a run producer. BTW, EdE and Cantu are both having pretty much the same season so far, including playing less than stellar defense.

I think there was also some gambling going on about picking up another player? Or was it just letting him go to make room for that dumb Rule V pick up? He would be good as a right-hander off the bench, spelling Votto every now and then, but them’s the breaks.

He's got a pretty good team right there
Just a quick rundown (I may miss somebody)
C – Molina
1B – Barton
2B – Polanco
3B – Pujols (may have stayed playing 3B if not for Rolen, though the elbow wouldn’t allow it at this point)
SS – Jack Wilson
LF – Duncan
CF – Crisp
RF – Drew
SP – Haren
SP – Morris
SP – Ankiel (if you assuming he doesn’t go bonkers)
SP – Looper
P – Brad Thompson
P – Kevin Correia
Plus a scattered few bench players like Jason Michaels, Xavier Nady and Adam Kennedy. It’s not too bad, and I’d be pretty confident in saying that it’s better than what the Reds produced over the same time span.

i think it's strange
coming the day after a win highlighted by a great performance by Volquez, a product of Krivsky’s greatest move.

But also the day after Hairston comes up and has four hits in the leadoff position.
Maybe Wayne was against that signing but in favor of Patterson.
Silly speculation, I know. But we are bloggers.

one of my first questions to Jock would be
about the 2008 draft choice. I’m curious to see what direction he will head in . If I remember correctly the Reds have either the 7th or 8th pick.

who will be the GM in 2010?
and again in 2012, 2014, I guess it makes sense to get a new GM every even year, it falls in line with when we get a new Congress, President (some years) and Governor (other years), so we should get a new GM to go with it.

a better question might be
who will be the manager in 2010? When Dusty doesnt take the Reds to the playoffs, he’ll be easily axed by jocketty. And then we get to be up close and personal with larussa

Does Homer
come off as an arsehole? He kinda looks like it. As for Dusty, I find him equally frustrating and likable. For every idiotic on-field decision that he makes, I think I like the way he handles the players. It’s kind of a wash for me, except that Corey Patterson tips the scales slightly more to the side of dislike.

TLR comes
and I’m done with the Reds for the length of his tenure. Also, Marty would have a brain hemmorage. As a side note, I pressed reply to ‘than and my font got all big and the other comments are big and f-ed up now. Are your compter deficiences now being passed along like a virus?

am i the only one who thinks the Dusty was a Bob hiring not a Wayne hiring?
I think Krivksy liked have the Jerry Narron’s, Dave Miley’s (before his time), and Pete McKanin’s of the baseball world, because they didn’t have big nams. Guys like them didn’t have as much pull in the organization as Dusty does. I am guessing Patterson and Harriston were Dusty’s ideas. I can’t imagine Krivsky would have given $3M to Patterson on his own, Dusty may even have told Patterson to hold out, and not take just a Million or less as would be standard, because he knew that the organization would do what he wanted. I am guessing if it were up to Wayne, he would have kept MaCakin or would have hired someother unknown “Baseball man”. So instead of having a cheap manager who nobody has ever heard of (who could be as bad as Narron) the Reds have a bad manager who is expensive, and a baseball intellectual according to Marty.
I want somebody like the Pirates new GM, who believes in stats. Theo Epstein does it with stats so does Billy Beane.

That most people wanted McKraken to stay on, but were overridden by Big Bob’s wanting a big name.

well i dind't really have a problem with Macakininieineiniroiuearioa esuroimdsoiuafm (needed a third spelling)
He seemed to be a rather average manager. He didn’t really seem to help or hurt the team ( but I thought that about Narron in 2005), but Bob wanted to sell season tickets. I was excited by Bob at first, but I think he might be a little overzealous in his running of the team. I guess he is better than Hank Steinbrenner.
I would have liked to see Almazar as the next GM. I know he is gone, and the Reds would have had to get premission to interveiw him, but he seems talented. (see Johnny Cueto)

Jocketty doesn't believe in stats?
That’s amazing. He was a general manager for all of those years, and even got a world series, but he doesn’t believe in stats. I guess Average, OBP, ERA, Wins, losses, and the like are just like Santa Clause to him.
I’m glad you alerted me to this, I’m gravely concerned about our future now!

he doesn't like sabrametrics
k/9, bb/9, k/bb, ops, things like that, those worthess stats that only souless people who don’t leave their mothers basements look at, oh and Theo Epstein and Billy Beane use them.

About those contracts
I may be in the dark here but, doesn’t the owner have to sign off on all of those bad contracts. How much of a baseball man can Bob be if he agrees to pay Mike Stanton no matter what?

The owner has to give some power to the GM to make decisions
otherwise he’s just George Steinbrenner. Maybe Bobby C signed off on the deals, but he probably trusted Krivsky’s view that they were worth it.
