Game 21 Wrap: Oh my god, they found it, I don't know how but they found it. Run for it, Marty!
Who? Who do you think? The Offense!
Wow, the offense was finally cooking. Smells delicious! I'm not going to bog you down with a lot of chit chat. Just the boxscore:
AB R H RBI BB K LOB
J. Hairston Jr. cf-lf 5 0 4 3 0 0 0
J. Keppinger ss 5 0 2 1 0 0 3
K. Griffey Jr. rf 4 0 0 0 0 1 2
R. Freel rf 1 0 0 0 0 1 1
B. Phillips 2b 4 1 1 1 0 0 1
A. Dunn lf 4 2 2 1 0 1 0
J. Affeldt p 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
T. Coffey p 0 0 0 0 0 0 0
E. Encarnacion 3b 4 1 1 0 0 1 1
J. Votto 1b 4 2 3 1 0 0 0
P. Bako c 3 1 1 1 1 0 1
E. Volquez p 2 0 0 0 0 0 3
C. Patterson cf 1 1 1 0 0 0 0
Total 37 8 15 8 1 4 7
The biggest star of the night might have been Volquez though. He finally made it through more than 5+ innings, going 7 total while striking out 7 and walking 4. He only allowed 3 hits, so despite the 4 walks, his WHIP went down. The bullpen needed the rest, so it was a great time for an excellent outing. Now on to that momentum stuff...

Hairston...
...was on fire on Louisville, and it looks like his bat is still hot.
Bet he leads off tomorrow, too.
But how they going to make room for Ross? Can they really cut Bako?

I don't think so
I think it will have to be a position player.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
doubt it
Though they might use him as a lefty pinch-hitter instead of a backup catcher.
I’m thinking if they decide to keep Bako, it might be Hopper who goes. He has options, I think, so they can stash him in Louisville without exposing him to waivers. Freel and Hairston can cover the scrappy, speedy righted handed hitter role for now. Plus, they can both play infield as well as outfield, while Hopper can only play outfield.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I'm not sure
I have no clue if he has options left, or if he’s been outrighted before.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I say it's Norris Hopper
I think he is the only position player besides EE and Votto that has options.

Griffey has options
Not that they would or should send him down, but he has options.
by Brendanukkah on Apr 23, 2008 9:41 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah
but he can refuse the option because he has enough MLB Service time.

Griffey can evidently refuse to bat sixth in the lineup so...
I don’t think he wants to go over to Jay’s house to play.

If they keep LLM as the lefty pinch hitters
they are fools. They’ve already got Patterson and Hatteberg on the bench. They don’t need another lefty bat on the bench.
You're drowing in the past, Mike, and I've got your life jacket right here. It's called the 80s and it's gonna be around forever.
I bet Hatteberg is traded before Alex Gonzalez gets back
Unless there is an injury, hard to imagine Scott still here by the all star break.

trade
The Reds should have too many similar centerfielders. We’re arguing over who should hold the place for Bruce. We should be arguing over potential trades.
If you're not having fun, stop participating.

Rec'd.
I caught most of the game but missed most of the threads. I skimmed through them and was having some fun but when I saw BK’s “Everybody look at your hands” fly by out of context I just cumb’d and left it at that. Awesome. I don’t know why. But awesome.
My favorite part of the game was for some reason also my favorite part of the season thus far: VW vs aging All Star Jeff Kent just after the double play in the bottom of the sixth…
0-0: Fastball away because the score is 7-1 and with two outs VW could go ahead put Kent on base if he wanted to.
1-0: Curveball(?) in tight because it didn’t break or maybe it’s just because VW ’s not afraid to go there.
2-0: Kent’s off balance and/or he thinks VW’s a little bit wild. Here it is old fella.. fastball top of the zone. Fouled up and away.
2-1: Hmm.. Aww, what the hell.. the score’s 7-1. Here it is whitey, hit it. Another fastball…. whifffffff…
2-2: Fastball again? He wants one even though he hasn’t shit with the two he’s seen but surely he knows it’s gonna be the changeup. Slider. Swing and a miss. Strike three. Three out.
Veteran presence, baby.
I didn’t see VW’s other strikeout of Kent but I’m headed to Gameday to check it out now.
Everybody look at your hands, indeed.

Kudos all around
Volquez pitched a helluva game, Jerry Hairston (sounds like he should have been in the Talking Heads) put together one of the best games from the leadoff slot we’ve had this year, the offense woke up, and everyone was clicking on 80’s night.
Really enjoyable game, and once again, a round of applause to everyone in the game thread.

And I don’t know if it was mentioned in the threads but I’ve gotta give some love to Slyde for his fantastic photo-shoppin’ skillz. Nice work, boss.

Saw a bit of the game tonite
I am stunned by Jerry Jr. Hair-stunned…who’d a thunk it. How so ever one game does not mean a whole lot, I mean look a Corey – he started hot and then came back down to earth. Be nice if Jerry Jr. stays in the clounds for a while. i concur with Red Menace – to the top and ride the wave.
Radiohead killed the Video Star
4-for-5 with 3 RBI.. Send in the clounds!

It was 80’s night, and David Lee ross returned to the reds.
so guess who was doing a concert at usbank? That’s right Van Halen!

See
no need to panic about the offense…now sure Hariston won’t go 4 for 5 the rest of this season and for all I know the reds could get shut out the next 3 games but I’m happy about the win.

Don't look now..
..but the Cubs have won five straight. 8 of 9. 13 of 16.
Let’s kick some Astros.

The Cubs offense is on fire right now!
They will slow down don’t worry…but we are going to hear the “The Cubs are better when Soriono is not in the line up” talk real soon.
Norris Hopper's #1 fan!!!
First time I've watched Baseball Tonight in a while
They did a piece about what separates an “ace” from a ”#1 starter”. It was hard to argue with who they selected for “ace”s (Peavy, Webb, Santana), but any list that features Carlos Zambrano and leaves off Aaron Harang is completely bunk.
Even if you just look at recent stats:
Harang 2007: 16-6, 231 2/3 IP, 218/52 K/BB, 3.73 ERA, 1.14 WHIP
Zambrano 2007: 18-13, 216 1/3 IP, 177/101 K/BB, 3.95 ERA, 1.33 WHIP
Looks pretty definitive to me. Also of note: the same media honks that put Zambrano on the list and left Harang off voted for the Cy Young:
Harang 4th
Zambrano 5th
Looks like he’ll always be our Adam Harang.

Feels good
to finally be on the right side of one of those ass-whippings for once.
But looking at what the Asstros did to Peavy and the Pads over the last couple of nights leaves me a little shaky on the whole confidence thing. Hope their bats haven’t awakened.

Excellent reference!
I was buying a movie last night, saw it on the shelf, and almost went with it. I ended up going with the Warriors instead, but it was released in 1979, so too early for 80’s Night (“Can… you… dig it?!”).
BTW, I didn’t check any of the YouTube links, but please tell me someone RickRoll’d the thread. And if they didn’t, how did that not happen? I blame myself.

For some reason
this video led me to Everything She Wants by Wham. I think Andrew Ridgeley’s ability to spin and play guitar on a song with no intelligible guitar is one of the most under-appreciated things about the 80s.

um, I didn't mean intelligible
I meant discernible. Hopefully that makes my comment more intelligible.
