Juan Castro Designated For Assignment

Today the Reds re-instated RHP Matt Belisle from the 15-Day DL, Designated INF Juan Castro for Assignment, and selected the Contract of INF/OF Jerry Hairston Jr. from Triple-A. Hairston will wear # 15.
Well, atleast this is a move. It was obvious Castro was going to go at some point this season. Atleast Hairston bats right handed, and can play almost everything in the infield and outfield. Plus, he has been incredible at AAA. Let's hope he can produce off the bench here.

About time
I wouldn’t mind Castro so much if he was only used late in games as a defensive replacement to hold a lead, naw I lie, I still minded him being on the Reds roster. A right handed bat that has some life to it is what the Reds need right now.

This breaks up Dunn and Jr. and puts Dunn (who is getting on base a ton, despite a lousy average) ahead of our best hitters. Maybe this gets us a couple of more runs a game.

I feel that to go along with these moves Coffey should be optioned to AAA (before somebody asks HE HAS OPTIONS) and Bray should be recalled.

i'm ok with Homer in AAA
and Fogg in long relief. Fogg may be useful or atleast a nesscary evil at some point this season. I think if the Reds DFA Fogg they will regret it in August or September as the rigors of the season catch up to the team. I remember when the Reds DFA’ed Williams in MAY, and had to use Mickalik in August.

I think Bailey is getting more out of starting in Louisiville
than pitching in long relief in Cincinnati. He needs to develop his command and his secondary pitches. That is easier to do pitching every 5 days, rather than whenever the team is desperate for sombody to suck up some innings.

Excellent move
Although Hairston isn’t the glove Castro is, he is good enough and gives us a much better bat. He is also just as versatile. Plus, Castro’s range was only going to decrease as age crept up on him. He still had great hands but not as much range as 2-3 years ago.
I think it’s good that Valentin is taking extra BP. If they want Ross on the major league roster, then I’m not sure Javy will stay.

Do you think that Phillips is our backup at short? Hairston has never played a lot of short in the majors. He was more of a 2nd base type guy.

He played 4 games at SS in Louisville this year. And he has more experience there than Keppinger had. I wouldn’t be surprised if BP got some time there, but I’d bet that Hairston is the backup.

Gonzalez is the starter when he comes back (dictated more by his contract than his results). Freel could possibly serve as the backup as well. I don’t think Phillips will be moved. They’ve had a number of chances to move him there and resisted every time. I don’t see why this would be different, and I wouldn’t want them screwing up what they’ve got at second.
Oh yeah, and I don’t think they’d be too reluctant to use Hairston as a backup at short either.

Dusty likes Kepp though as shown by his recent comments.
If Kepp’s a backup at SS, then he’s going to be like the Freel of old and be playing 85% of the time, IMO. I am ecstatic TSF castro is gone, if for no other reason that he was eating bench space and wasn’t good enough to PH.

I read somewhere that people with who have different-colored eyes are actually chimeras. That is, they started out when two embryos fused into one in the womb. Fraternal twins, where one absorbed the other. Sort of the opposite of identical twinning, where one embryo splits into two. They actually have different DNA in different cells in their bodies. This has occasionally caused problems with forensic and paternity DNA tests.

I don’t know if that’s ever happened, but there was a case where a woman was accused of fraud, because DNA tests showed that her four children, who were being supported on public assistance, were not hers.
Turns out, they were hers. She was a chimera, and her ovaries had different DNA than her blood or her cheek, where they took the DNA samples.
The weird thing is that you can have both male and female cells in one person. Which sex the person ends up depends on which cells are in control of the sex organs. In some cases, you end up with a hermaphrodite, but sometimes the person never knows that some of his or her cells are a different gender.
