Game 19 Thread: Brewers at Reds
Milwaukee Brewers @ Cincinnati Reds
Pat Sullivan/AP (Gallardo), Al Behrman/AP (Harang)

|
|
Gallardo is making his first start since coming off a knee injury, so who knows what to expect. His rehab starts are a little scattered: He's struck out 18 and walked only five in 15.2 innings, but he's given up 20 hits and nine runs (5.17 ERA). Last year he was Milwaukee's Homer Bailey, only much more successful: 9-5 with a 3.67 ERA, 1.269 WHIP. I guess he was really their Johnny Cueto.
With the uncertainty surrounding his return, I don't feel unhopeful. But with the way we've been hitting and defending, I certainly don't feel hopeful, either. Go Reds anyway.

I didn't realize that things are this bad
The opponents starter will be pitching underhand to us today. And we still won’t be able to score many runs.

Good catch!
Maybe we’ve got a shot today, then!
Its funny considering the last decade, but now I’m hoping the Reds go into the next draft and get another big, strapping outfielder that can tear the cover off the ball. We used to think we had plenty of those, but no pitching. Now it seems its reversed.
The season doesn't start until the Cincinnati Reds take the field! Reclaim The Opener!!

I'm hopeful
We’re due, dammit. And maybe the Brewers will have a house money/getaway day lineup in. It’s the division-leading Cards up next for the Brewers. I think it would be a great day to rest Bill Hall.

I agree
but if I’m the Brew Crew freakin Bill Hall would never rest against the Reds

Thoughts on Frank Thomas being released?
Could he be our RH off the bench – occasional 1B versus lefties? Assuming the price is right.

I'd probably take Thomas's bat over Piazza
but Thomas has played 68 games in the field since 2000 and hasn’t actually put on a glove since 2004. I don’t see him fitting anywhere in the NL.

big frank
i dont think he would come to the Reds, even if he could play the field. apparently he was pissed at the Jays for cutting his playing time, and that is something he wouldnt really get here, even if he could play 1st. it would be totally wicked bad if we had him as our big righty, but alas…

Doesn't the money *have* to be right?
Since the BJs cut him, won’t the team picking him up only be responsible for the prorated ML minimum and the BJs are forced to swallow the rest?
How many more asides can I work into a serious comment?

Is it really that hard to see that Corey Patterson is arguably the worst leadoff hitter
of all 30 MLB teams?
Please put him down at 7 or 8.

i don't understand it, either
kepp’s obp: .367. he doesn’t steal bases, but neither does patterson since he’s never on base (.246 obp, even under his career avg!)
has dunn ever led off? he’s at .423 obp right now. why does he hit so low in the lineup? he’s always on base with few to hit him in. i guess edwin and votto have started to hit now, but geez, get dunner up to the two hole or something.

Phillips is more likely to bat 3-4 all year than 7. Ugh I hate our manager

Dunn would be good at leadoff or 4.
The best way to score runs is to get your leadoff man on base in an inning (obvious).
The #1 hitter leads off the most innings, followed by the #4.
I can’t see Dunn ever leading off, so 4 is the logical spot for him.

Where are the "Big Moves"?
I had heard some rumblings that big stuff was going down this weekend.
Anyone concerned with Bailey’s AAA K/IP ratio? The kid just doesnt seem to overpower people, but im still optimistic. Kris Benson type career?
Is NoHo still on the roster? Have the team MD’s banned him from playing?
by obc2 on Apr 20, 2008 12:54 PM EDT 0 recs
Bailey seems to be making a concerted effort to trade some K’s for improved control. He has only four walks in four starts.
He's extremely quick and good.

i think bailey's success
outweighs any concern about his lowish K rate. whatever he’s doing, it’s working.

and the syracuse chiefs
and the scranton yankees (when he struck out 7 in 5.2 innings). and the pawtucket red sox. But he didn’t have this kind of success (1.03 ERA) in the minors last year. He’s never had this kind of success at any level, although I’m sure he won’t sustain that low of an ERA all season.

I was just shootin' my mouth off.
IL hitters have always impressed me. I’ve been to my share of Clippers games through the years and I’ve convinced myself that it’s a reasonable facsimile of MLB-caliber play.
There’s always a a SS or 3B who can’t make routine plays, there won’t often be more than one “fearsome” hitter in either lineup , and the pitchers always seem to be “working on their conrol.” Otherwise, the IL is pretty good. I like it enough.

At one point I calculated it
A 6 mph difference over 55 feet (about how far away a pitch releases the ball from his hand) amounted to a difference of ~0.03 seconds in its arrival at the plate. So 3 mph should be about 0.015 seconds..
Is that enough to matter to a hitter’s timing? Heck if I know… My guess is no, but I also imagine that every little bit counts… -j
