Game 14 Wrapup Thread: 2007 Edition
EDITORS NOTE: With Boobs temporarily out of commission while recovering from all of his real world escapades, Justin has provided some pretty good break room reading material. It's too bad the coffee still sucks.
I know I am not an administrator or anything, but I like the wrapup thread so I am posting one tonight. The Reds seemed to have found some offense just in time for the bullpen to fail. I seem to remember games like this last season; one componet of the team would catastrophicaly fail everynight.
According to Fay Harang was ill today which explains...
...why his velocity was down. I don't understand why he pitced the 6th, since his pitch count and location were up and his velocity was down, but what do I know I only where a Wriststrong braclet, and not very often. It seems like Harang has had a few starts affected by illness. He had the flu when he started on Opening Day 2006, and I remember reading about sinus infections and what not throwing off his game. Maybe Harang needs to drink more Orange Juice.
Griffey hit his 595th home run tonight. I have tickets for the May 18th Indians game; could I see home run #600? I hope not, hopefully he will have already have passed 600 home runs by that time. I seem to remember him stalling at around 498 home runs in 2004 and getting to 500 was a real struggle for him. I saw him hit 497 and 498 at an Expos Reds game at the end of May and he didn't reach 500 until Father's Day.
The Bullpen... As I have noted several times before I do not get FSN at ONU, and I stopped listening after Burton opened the flood gates. After Burton opened the floodgates Affeldt went New Orleans levi system on us. Coffey had another less than steller outing. I just checked Baseball-Reference, Coffey 10th most comparable pitcher is a fellow Hamilton High alum Ricky Stone. He is also an alum of my Junior High School. I was hoping that last season was the outlier and 2006 was the norm but everyday I have come closer to accepting that Coffey probably will not be a productive relief pitcher. He really hasn't been that good since he was placed in the closers role in 2006. He had an ERA below 1 for atleast the first month of 2006, and it sky rocketed to 3.58. In the months of June, July, and August he posted ERA's above 5. He kind of reminds me of John Riedling. In April of 2004 he posted an ERA of .84, in May 2.20, June 7.20, July 4.70, August 10.38, and September 6.94. Riedling was also a hard throwing right hander. Considering he still throws in the mid 90's, which makes injury or overuse seem unlikely, one of two things has happened to Todd Coffey. A-All he offered was velocity and has very little movement on his fastball and his breaking ball isn't very good, or he tips it. B-I remember several blown saves in 2006 and he just wasn't the same afterwards, perhaps he has lost his confidence. I am guessing if he puts up another bad season the Reds will non-tendor him at the end of the season.
Our old friend Dempters pitched rather poorly for Chicago, 6 IP, 5 H, 4 R's all earned, 5 BB and 3 K's. From an old school perspective he wasn't very good because he gave up 4 ER's in 6 innings. From a sabrametric perspective he wasn't very good becuse he he walked a little less than one man per inning, and two more walks than K's, and had a game WHIP of 1.67. He was probably lucky that he only gave up four runs. I thought it was strange that Chicago moved Dempster to the closers role 3 years ago. He seemed like that his best niche would be as an innings eater. Before he came to Cincinnati he consistantly put up 200 innings a season, he had one or two good seaons, but he seemed like a hard throwing middle to low rotation kind of guy. I don't think he was fit for the closers role becaue he walks too many hitters. I want to feel reasonably sure that my closer, or any key relief pitcher for that matter, is going to come in and throw strikes. I am guessing he won't have the arm strength to stick as a starting pitcher, especially with the way that Lou uses his pitchers (Am I the only one who thinks it is strange that part of Dusty's problem was that he ruined Prior and Wood and his successor rides starting pitchers just as hard as he did?)
In Lousiville Belisle threw 7 innings, gave up 8 hits allowed only 1 walk, struck out 6 and gave up one run which was earned. It was the 8.2 and the CG of A and AA, but he might have the hot hand right now. If Fogg struggles tomorow is it too early to take him out of the rotation? I would move Fogg to long relief, Coffey to AAA and Belisle to the rotation. But I think I ama little biased towards Belisle and I don't really know why. McBeth also threw a scorless inning tonight didn't allow a baserunner and struck out a batter for his second save. David Ross went 1/4 with 3 strike outs, his hit was a single. His AAA BA is .154. He and Belisle are going to force Sweaterpants to make a few difficult decisions for different reasons. He didn't pitch tonight but so far Bray has pitched in 4.1 innings in 4 games, has allowed a single hit, but 3 walks, and 6 K's.
But hey we get to see the mismatch of Fogg and Zambrano tomorow, although Zambrano isn't as good as he was two years ago.

I'm not sure the offense really did much tonight.
The wind was blowing out and Ryan Dempster was on the mound. Color me unimpressed with their performance.

Fay on Coffey
I’ll admit I was stunned to see Todd Coffey in the game. Might have been “I’m going to use who you given me” move by Baker.
Bray is pitching well enough that he probably deserves a shot.
I think Ross will stay in Louisville until he starts to hit. Bako is more than holding his own right now.
(And if anyone’s wondering, the Yankees’ current starting catcher, Chad Moeller, was 0 for 2 but with two walks tonight.)

Party like a rock star
I could go for Bray replacing Coffey. If Fogg isn’t frontin’ tonight Belisle or even Bailey could bump him to relief. That way we can’t lose.
And I assume 2007 edition is our latest retro theme. Damn all you beautiful girls, you can stand under my umbrella!

Unfortunately
2007 was our theme last night.
I guess the good news is that the pitchers that really sucked actually were the same guys we had in in the pen last year.

Roster
When there’s room on the roster for two guys who didn’t even throw a single pitch last season, and one of them hasn’t pitched the past few years, they’re still going to have some issues this year.

Yeah well. I predicted that this club would not be all that great offensively this year
and boy do hope I was wrong. But we do need a productive BIG RH bat in the line up.

My housemate is from Goshen
and is a big Cubs fan. Yesterday morning I was talking smack about the Harang/Dempster matchup. Oops.
Though, much more than Dempster beating Harang (I hope I never have to repeat that sentence), it was more the Cubs bullpen and defense beat our offense while our Bullpen got pounded.
Votto’s homer was pretty sweet though.
Oh, and Soriano is “out for a while.”
Tanzen!

I think I'm ready to see Dunn move up to the 2-hole
Swap him and Keppinger in the everyday order, just to shake things up. Dunn’s been on base 13 times in the last 6 games, but only 3 of those are hits. Either he’s being pitched around or he’s not willing to swing the bat. Whatever it is, his main positive attribute right now is his OBP. Time to stop wasting it fro the bottom half of the order.
I like Keppinger batting 5th mainly because I consider high contact guys to be great options for cleaning up whatever mess gets through the 3 and 4 hitters. Let those guys swing for power and if they can’t get it done, hopefully Keppinger can put the ball in play and something good will happen with 2 outs.

Dunn should bat higher than 5th
I know it screws up Bakers L-R-L-R-L thing, but I’d love to see him bat a couple of lefties back-to-back against a RH starter..

Why not?
Because Griffey cannot hit anywhere but third in the lineup. Dusty’s rules.

Doug at Reds Pitch FX helped me out with a request
Dunn hasn’t been going out of the zone much so far. And it looks like pitchers aren’t really challenging him either. That’s why he leads the WORLD in walks.

Patience
I’m willing to be patient with Dustbag. The offense will come around some, hopefully soon, remember this team offensively is pretty much the same guys that we had last season, not too bad – not the ‘76 Reds either. I’m not willing to be a patient with the bull pen. We could definately use Bray now. Fogg is just a place holder until Beillize gets the call. The guy who really needs to get his confidence up is obviously EdE. So I hope that Dustbag will continue to play him and give him time to get going. BUT he’s gotta get it going soon or Fanrey will be at 3rd base.(Not that Freel couldn’t bring a little needed energy to the the team right now.)

It will be interesting to see
how committed Dusty is to knifey-spoony. In other words, if Coffey goes, does he automatically bring up a righty?

There is no compelling reason to think that Dusty would deviate from kniey-spoony,
even though Bray is tearing it up down on the farm. There is also no compelling reason to think that Bill Bray can’t get out RH batters as well as lefties.

I have hunch he and Krivsky will bring up Belisle
if Coffey’s sent down.
But my hunches have been awful lately, so…

i think so too
he stayed in louisville last night presumably just to see belisle pitch. And I remember now that the first day i saw him he stodd next to belisle and watched him throw long tosses. weird. and last night belisle looked really good. i don’t think it will be long before matt’s making it belizzle in the nati.

So you're thinking Coffey down, Belisle up, Fogg to the bullpen?
Or does Belisle just go straight to the ‘pen? It seems that the way he’s been pitching, we’d want him in our rotation. If Krivsky’s just looking to swap relievers, it makes more sense to me to just send down Coffey and bring up Bray. I guess everything really hinges on Fogg’s start tonight. If he pitches well against Zambrano, I think he’s earned another start. If he gets rocked, Belisle comes up and Bray waits a little longer.
Doesn’t it seem like Homer is pretty close to staking a claim to be starting for Cinci?

Fogg's start
I think in addition to how he pitches, it’s important to see how deep into the game he can work. If he’s really become just a 5 inning pitcher, 6 inning max, it may be time to move him to long relief.
If they feel Bray is ready to come up, I wouldn’t have an issue with Coffey and Burton both getting a trip to AAA.

i wondered about burton too
he got insanely lucky last year (.232 BABIP) but i wouldnt send down my second-best righty until he implodes for a while. i was talking to slyde about this earlier… I just don’t see a spot for bray until there’s an injury or sustained baditude by mercker or lincoln.
also, there’s a logjam of starters. it’s strange to think we might be in a position to trade pitching, but with homer and belisle we have 7 potential starters. even if fogg moves to long man, homer’s in louisville with little to prove there. at this point i think we should consider trading homer for a strong righty bat.

yeah
Jared Burton has 13 Ks and 2 BBs in 7.1 innings this season. Last night was the first time I remember him looking seriously hittable so far this year. There isn’t anybody in the minors that I would send him down for right now.

I am guessing the Reds are going to need atleast 7 pitchers throughout the season
remember when they DFA’ed Williams in April and had to use Chris Mickalick in August?

I think Fogg and
I just have a hard time seeing the organization sending down a RH reliever and bringing up a LH reliever, no matter the individual splits. But perhaps I’m imputing a hard-headedness to them that’s unfair.
Plus in Belisle and Fogg you have two guys who could start or relieve.
