she is a jewish woman from chicago. She married Cheddi Jagan, who was president of Guyana in the 60s, a communist (legitmatly elected), who Kennedy had overthrown because we support democracy. He became President again in the 90s, died, and his wife came to power.

Corey Patterson, 0-4

I'm predicting that we should get used to seeing that.

Positives

Cordero pitched a scoreless ninth. But even better, Weathers pitched a scoreless eighth. Now, if we could get some hits every now and again, we'd be in business.

This offense will need....

....a manager that isn't a child of the 1970s, who still thinks Dane Iorg would've made a wonderful lead-off man. Corey .298 OBP Patterson? The man couldn't get on base with a hooker if he was the Governor of New York. I keep having this feeling that it is going to be a long season. I hope I'm wrong.

FWIW... [Putting on my Corey Patterson apologist hat]

Today Patterson and Valentin were the only Reds who made contact in every at-bat. Brandon Webb is a good baseball player and the Reds were seemingly overmatched and without an apropriate game plan. Patterson seemed to have some idea of what he wanted to do today. (I'll say the same for Griffey, Dunn and Edwin.)

I watched/listened to Patterson with a critical eye today and I saw him take the first four pitches of the game. In the seventh he did swing at the first pitch he saw from Qualls. And the bottom of the seventh was the Reds' first trip to the plate after Salazar took Burton deeeep to put AZ up by two-- so I don't know why Patterson would have abandoned his game plan at that point. He prolly saw a fastball he liked and he was tired of pussy-footin' outs so he hacked. He hit the ball hard but the Snakes happened to have had a guy playing centerfield today. Damn the bad luck.

It wasn't his best day but to me he looked better than BP and Keppinger.

by Fat Vegas Alan on Mar 31, 2008 10:35 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah,

from my stool at the Five Star American Bar Y Banco Deportivo Patterson seemed to have had a decent day. He certainly showed he can play center field (though he should have called Griffey off with authority on the play they nearly collided) and he put a charge into a few balls.

Outside of the, "its a single- oh wait its a triple!," The D-Backs defense was pretty much lights out (Orlando Hudson was nuts). Brandon Webb is indeed a "good baseball player" and with the ump seemingly calling high strikes the Reds hitters were quite baffled most of the afternoon. Did you see how Webb worked Kepp inside all day and had him swinging at pitches that were swerving into his shoelaces?

A positive note about the "raining [of] baseballs into the outfield stands" was that we didn't walk anybody before hand. Harang and Burton left a few pitches up and over the plate, but the damage was surmountable had our offense really been "trying to win the game."

Oh, and tally up two watery pints towards my beer total.

Tanzen!

Well

They struck out 16 times on OD in 2005 and won that game. So...

It's funny how when the Reds face better pitchers, they don't hit as well. Why is that? I'll hang up and listen to your answer.

Well the reds will get 70 more wins this season so don't worry!

Three hits. Yikes.

And one of 'em was Harang's infield single.

Check out BP's quote: "It was like we were trying to prove something instead of trying to win the game. A lot of guys were swinging at balls they don’t normally swing at."

By "a lot of guys" I think maybe he means "the three times that me, myself and I went to the plate."

Phillips struck out three times while only Griffey struck out more than once. (And Griffey managed one of the four Reds walks while also- as I remember- drawing the count full in one of his strikeouts.)

At least

our bullpen looked like major leaguers. Three innings and one run isn't bad, and I liked how everyone pitched a complete inning. Looks like Dusty's giving the relievers set roles, which is nice.
