Baseball and New Media

http://news.enquirer.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/AB/20080331/SPT04/803310353/

Apparently C. Trent can't blog quite in the same mannor as he did last year.  I feel like tightening the restrictiong of coverage is a bad decision in the long run.  You gotta figure baseball really wants to keep blogs such as SB "in their place".  To me blogs such as Redreporter, Redlegnation, redsminorleauge, etc enhance interest in the team and the sport in general and can create more excitment among fans and make us more likely to watch, listen, or buy a ticket.  I can't immagine their are too many people who would rather read a blogs play by play of a game, over listening to the radio or watching TV.

I am predicting that eventually MLB will come down on "Redlegnation" and want money for using a name that is the property of MLB.

I don't see this as a big deal

The 7 picture/2 minutes of video restrictions seem reasonable. This allows bloggers to distribute some content but not so much that a viewer is discouraged from turning on the TV or radio. The live blogging prohibition is more irritating, but I understand why MLB wants to direct its audience to broadcasts that it can control. Nobody is saying that MLB is going to clamp down on blogs from commenting about the team and games. And I am predicting that you are wrong about "Redlegnation."

i was exagerating a little

but the Washington team couldn't get the name "Senators" because the Texas Rangers still retain the rights to the name "Senators".

Blogging will never replace listening/watching the game live. This is not a threat to MLB's broadcast partners. It is a threat to their online properties.

I like TechDirt's take on this, http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20071220/010939.shtml, this really hurts them with their most passionate fans. Don't tick off your base!

If you're not having fun, stop participating.

Seems like a pointless power grab.

Which is pretty much MLB's modus operandi, so it's not really surprising. I fail to see where they benefit in any way by restricting access, but they get off more on having the ability to control it than the bit of extra publicity or love for the game it might generate.

by Geki on Mar 31, 2008 10:40 AM EDT reply actions

Restricting access

I don't think the folks at MLB truly want to rain on anyone's parade. The fact of the matter is that they are obligated to protect their copyrights (& trademarks for that matter) in today's media (audio, video, MLB-sites, blogs) to protect themselves in tomorrow's media. Who knows what type of media we'll being enjoying MLB games with in ten more years. If the MLB doesn't set a precendence today then they'll have less of a leg to stand on if they litigate against a new media type in upcoming years. It's not that Bud Selig & Co. in NYC want to ruin our experience they are just protecting the league's rights in real time and in future time.

mlb press secratary?

seriously you think Selig wants to do anything for the fans? You think that the industry of MLB cares about us?

Sure

They know the most hardcore fans (which includes all of us) will follow the sport regardless, so nothing is catered to us.

by Red Menace on Mar 31, 2008 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

They care about you through your dollars

You are right. If you stop following the game MLB loses dollars. Do I think they also want you to enjoy the product? (Watching baseball whether on TV or at the stadium, is a product that you are buying.) Yes I do. But even if you didn't enjoy the product and yet still kept watching then they are still making money. MLB only sells their product through certain venues and in some regards like to make their product 'exclusive' by requiring you to purchase through their official channels (i.e. online and satellite radio subscriptions). By trying to protect itself from competing media sources they are working to protect the distribution through these channels, their revenue streams. Does it stink? Yes, in some ways.

yeah because C Trent Rosecrans is a threat to WLW, FSN, ESPN, and FOX, or whoever else broadcasts the game

I agree with Geki. This is a strange exercise in power. This is as rediculous as the territorial rights. I don't have acess to FSN with my campus cable, but I live in the 45810 zip code, so I am in Detroit, Cleveland, and Cincinnati territory, so I can't watch those games. Does FSN or MLB really think somebody would rather watch a game on MLB.tv, when they can watch it on TV? Plus I am watching FSN's feed, so why does it matter? I would still get George plugging the best sports show period.

Maybe not now

But live blogging could be a real threat in the future. As Speedway says, who knows. It's better to nip that in the bud rather than deal with angry fans in ten years. I really don't see the value of live blogging anyways. Even if you don't shell out for audio, gameday is free and you can "tune in" on game threads.

The territorial rights thing is ridiculous, but that's a completely different situation.

Nice avatar Ken

I understand justin007000's beef, though. He feels like he's losing something that he already had - that MLB is taking something from him. It stinks to lose what you had. But you're right MLB is cracking down now to protect their future distribution rights.

Territorial rights is a whole other beast.

The valuable content is watching the game

Listening to sMarty, tHom, Cowperson, The ol' boring lefthander, and George P.L. Grande is fun because of the RR commentary regarding their commentary. But I could just as easily watch the game and read the RR thread and be quite entertained.

Change is so exciting. I never know what the hell is going on. I love Chaos,

What bother's me about MLB

is not so much that they portect their brand, but that they abuse their control over media in terms of offering shitty service that they don't seem particularly interested in improving.

MLB.tv is a great idea, but it is a fucking bitch to use and their customer service is infuriating.

Plus ca change...

And this is why....

....baseball is dying as a sport, going from first, second and, within the next twenty years or so, to a third tier sport. You can always detect the detect the death of an industry. Like the RIAA, it transforms into a toll booth mentality, like parasites, to suck dry at the remainder of a shrinking market share. What better way to tell people to go away than to go after the very base that allows you to survive. As a lifelong baseball fan, I hate watching what is happening to my sport.

i'm surprised

sports bars don't have to buy rights to play games on e$pn, etc. how many of us have gone to sports bars to watch games we couldn't otherwise watch? or to share watching with others?

by Daedalus on Apr 1, 2008 2:13 PM EDT reply actions

AFAIK, they do

By buying the Extra Innings/Sunday Ticket/whatever package. And in all likelihood they're paying that fee for each receiver, i.e. every TV in the place.

by jch24 on Apr 1, 2008 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not certain about this

I think they pay a different price than the typical consumer as well. I seem to recall a commercial package for Extra Innings, but I may have made that up.

i'm watching espn right now.

i know businesses pay extra for a regular cable package, so perhaps there's some compensation in those costs.

I think the MLB is threatening Free Speech

I demand a senate investigation.

Hold on

wait until they are done with the oil companies. Baseball will come back around on their wheel of democracy soon.

Story picked up by Gaslamp Ball (SBN site)

I think this is where the MLB and many major companies don't understand how the internet works. They see their numbers (abstract and uncontainable as they are) as commodoties and they see everything on the internet as competition. Because they can't attach a hard dollar value to sites like Gaslamp Ball, they'll eventually see us as competition as well.

From this site.
