Opening Day Roster is Set
Belisle and Ross will both start the year on the DL, along with Gonzalez. Taking their places are Bako and Lincoln. In terms of good news, Votto is sticking around and starting.
The Fay:
Starting lineup:
Corey Patterson CF
Jeff Keppinger SS
Ken Griffey Jr. RF
Brandon Phillips 2B
Adam Dunn LF
Edwin Encarnacion 3B
Joey Votto 1B
Paul Bako/Javy Valentin C
Bench
Ryan Freel INF/OF
Juan Castro INF
Scott Hatteberg 1B
Norris Hopper OF
Rotation
Aaron Harang
Bronson Arroyo
Johnny Cueto
Josh Fogg
Edinson Volquez
Bullpen
Francisco Cordero
David Weathers
Todd Coffey
Kent Mercker
Jared Burton
Jeremy Affeldt
Mike Lincoln
DL: SS Alex Gonzalez, C David Ross and P Matt Belisle.
We've gotta clear 3 spots on the 40 man for Lincoln, Cueto, Bako, Patterson, and Mercker, so that could get interesting. My guesses on who we dump there: Hanigan, Coutlangus, and Drew T. Anderson. Tyler Pelland and Ramon Ramirez also appear to be possibilities. Cutting Stanton and losing Capellan cleared up two spots already.
Rate your level of satisfaction with the roster.
Fun note: I have no idea how to work these fancy new "FanPosts", leading to my work looking moderately retarded. If only pressing enter actually meant something...

What happened to Cabrera and Hairston?
Not that I'll miss them, but I'm just wondering if they'll be in the minors, looming.
As for the formatting, I discovered that if you push SHIFT-ENTER instead of just ENTER, it only does a single line (i.e. it doesn't start a new paragraph). Just for future reference. Hope you don't mind that I cleaned it up a bit.

No problem
I've noticed that when you cut and paste stuff and then try to format it, for some reason it turns all line breaks from the pasted text into paragraph breaks. That's why your text looked double-spaced. Probably should log that as a bug.

Not sure on Cabrera, but if I recall correctly, Hairston was signed to a minor league deal so he'll probably be sticking around.

Votto is good news,
Stinkton gone - good news
Hairiston not on - good news
Corey Patterson CF - Rather see Noho
Jeff Keppinger SS - Good news for the offense
Ken Griffey Jr. RF - here's for a great final year Grif
Brandon Phillips 2B - Still has a strong upside
Adam Dunn LF - Should be in the 4 hole - 50HRs plus in 2008
Edwin Encarnacion 3B - Breakout year - count on it.
Joey Votto 1B - Nothing to prove at AAA
Paul Bako/Javy Valentin C - It is what it is
Bench - I didn't know he was out of retirement
Ryan Freel INF/OF - good way to use Farney
Juan Castro INF - Why oh Why ?
Scott Hatteberg 1B - glad to have this guy, will contribute or could later be part of an important trade if he's doing well.
Norris Hopper OF - should be the starter over Corey
Rotation
Aaron Harang - What's to say - awesome
Bronson Arroyo - What's to say again - great
Johnny Cueto - Here's coming of age
Josh Fogg - Good luck to Foggheadleghorn
Edinson Volquez - Good acquisition, could be a sleeper
Bullpen
Francisco Cordero - WhooHoo
David Weathers - Someday could be a great manager
Todd Coffey - Here's to a sustained remarkable turn around
Kent Mercker - Will be able to collect Social Security this year - but probably a good guy to have in the pen, clubhouse and to
use in certain situations
Jared Burton - Whang that ball up there boy!
Jeremy Affeldt - Hope he is as good this year as last
Mike Lincoln - Sounds more like a mystery writer than a ballplayer
DL: SS Alex Gonzalez, C David Ross and P Matt Belisle. - I think that all 3 of these guys will contribute BIG this year, esp. Belizzle.
Although this team is not as strong defensively as it could be or as strong offensively as it was last year, with the added pitching
both in the SR and pen, this team appears to be competitive. As soon as Bruce is ready and available, he could really be a difference maker as to whether or not the Reds make the playoffs. All in all Id give this roster as is a strong B-.

Patterson and Hopper will be platooning, methinks
Probably not a bad idea too. Hopper hits lefties pretty well. And Patterson is...well...left-handed. So there's that.

Sorry, it was a bad joke
I've been to Charleston several times and have enjoyed my time there. Never been to a sporting event though. Had a friend who went there in the late 90s and have another friend who teaches English there now. If there's one college in the US that doesn't suffer from grade inflation, it's the Citadel.

B-
The rotation looks good. The lineup doesn't look terrible (I'm willing to give Corey Patterson the benefit of the doubt right now because he had a good spring, and the beginning of the season is all about optimism). The batting order is a little whacky. I don't like Dunn and Edwin as low as they are, but that comes from the insistence of batting Patterson in the leadoff slot. Dumb.
The bench is only okay. I like Hatteberg, who will give you a good at-bat every time. Hopper's where he should be, and that's as your fourth outfielder. Freel has always been best when he's the utility guy, so I'm hoping he can put last year's disappointment behind him. Strictly on reputation, I'm willing to buy Castro as a defensive replacement for Keppinger, but I will be mighty glad when Gonzalez comes back. Of course, that would mean ditching Castro; we'll see if Castellini's willing to eat two bad contracts. My question is who should be the starting catcher. I think I'm leaning towards Bako (or maybe have Javy catching the young Dominicans). Ok, that's what I like. He can converse with them in Spanish and help them through the games, then provide a decent bat off the bench when Harang, Arroyo, and Fogg are pitching. Bako's just killing time til we get Ross back.
The 'pen... worries me. Cordero hasn't really shown to me that he's the automatic ninth we're all hoping he is. Weathers could be fine, but he's also old and been used A LOT the last two seasons. The bullpen leader, but still a question mark. Affeldt and Burton have struggled this spring. Coffey has looked good, but has he put his past behind him? Mercker is basically just a LOOGY and potentially more valuable as a clubhouse presence than a pitcher. Lincoln... freed the slaves, so that's something. To me, the bullpen is still hold your breath until they start to prove otherwise, but at least we have some options like Coutlangus and Roenicke that we can bring up.
So I'm okay with the team, but not crazy about it. I'll feel better when Gonzalez and Ross are back, and I will feel MUCH better when Bailey and Bruce can come up and contribute.
X-Factor: Despite all the cringeworthy material we've gotten from Dusty this season, everything I've read from the players sounds like they're all responding very positively to him and are willing to play their hearts out for him. That's gotta be worth a couple wins there, right?
by Brendanukkah on Mar 29, 2008 12:53 PM EDT 0 recs
Bailey seems to have a ways to go.
At some point he's gotta make the jump and to do that he's got to get his 'other ' pitches under control. I see him as iffy for a while.

I wonder if this makes Affeldt the long man out of the pen
And Mercker is the primary lefty. I like Mercker, but I'd rather have Bray in that spot. I hope Kent has some good innings left in the tank.
I think Hannigan, Anderson, and Ramirez will be dropped from the 40-man, though I agree that Pelland and probably Gardner are candidates as well. It probably doesn't make sense to hold onto Anderson since Bruce will need a 40-man spot when he's called up, and I'd expect him to be the next outfielder called up.

I doubt Mercker
lasts the season as the number one lefty out of the pen.
He's been a nice surprise this Spring (after suffering a career ending injury last season), and he's a guy you like to root for, but I was shocked--shocked--by how much upper body mass he's lost. I can see him breaking down by mid-summer.

I fully expect Bray to be back soon. The only thing I can think is that they don't feel like he can pitch enough right now to be the loogy, so they went with Mercker. And as far as I can tell, Affeldt is the only reliever "stretched out" enough to pitch more than 2 innings right now.

Mike Lincoln
I feel like I've missed something with this guy. He's 33. He hasn't pitched since '04, and wasn't that good to begin with. Since then he's had TJ surgery (twice - first time was unsuccessful) and hasn't pitched at all professionally. He's a righty. His spring doesn't look impressive - 11 IP, 5 K, 4 BB, 7 ER. Someone remind me why he made the team over McBeth, Bray, Roenicke, etc.
by ken on Mar 29, 2008 12:56 PM EDT 0 recs
He's been throwing in the mid-90s
Not sure if he used to throw that hard - I honestly know nothing about him. My guess is that he beat Roenicke & McBeth because of the experience and Bray because they don't think Bray is ready to pitch yet since he started later. He's my bet to be the first gone.

Not sure how serious you are about this
but I'll say something that I don't think has been brought up in the whole lineup construction debate. If you have guys in the #1 and #2 slots who don't make outs, then your #3 and 4 hitters will see the same amount of at bats as those hitting 1 and 2. Moreover, those hitting 3 and 4 will be doing so with those 1 and 2 hitters on base, which is better than having your 3 and 4 hitters leading off an inning all the time.
Our problem is that our #1 hitter makes a LOT of outs.

that's true
But we wouldn't notice a difference in overall run production unless the leadoff hitters are nearly automatic outs . . like Pierre or Patterson. The slight dropoff in plate appearances between 1/2 and 3/4 hitters when you have good leadoff hitters is mitigated by the fact that the 3/4 hitters are hitting with those guys on base. Whereas putting Dunn and Griffey 1 and 2 after the pitcher and catcher just made outs isn't very efficient from a run-production perspective.
I know that sounds hypothetical, but there are no statistics to measure what would happen if you bat your Ramirez/Ortiz, Griffey/Dunn, Lee/Ramirez-type hitters 1 and 2 (after the weakest 8 and 9 hitters) as opposed to 3 and 4. So we have to guess a little.

Like It
I like this roster. You can't say Baker favors the vets, after cutting Stanton and adding Cueto and Volquez to the roster. I like that we have the depth to be patient with Bruce and, to a different degree, Bray. Patterson and Mercker are simply keeping things warm, hopefully providing good play in the meantime. if not? It's no big thing to jettison them.
In general, I really like our depth. I think it's a stretch to bring the playoffs to Cincy this year--possible, though, and I can write that with a straight face--but I really like 2009, with Cueto, Volquez and Votto a year in, Bailey and Bruce seasoned and ready, and Dunn signed for five years.

*its statistically irrational, but im gonna give Patterson the benefit of the doubt, for now. i know past performance predicts future production, but....i have a weird feeling that he just might have a decent season. not great, not good...but decent. (good to have him on board, over the course of 162,especially considering fragile Freel and Junya.
*i like the fact that Bruce and Bailey could provide shot in the arm additions by Mem Day.
*Im still concerned with the overall organizational situation at C, its pretty, pretty thin.
*Kepp has to play, bottom line. His bat will outproduce Sea Bass' glove. Perfect top of the order hitter to boot.
*I have a hunch Roenicke will be up after the AS break.

i am first time poster long time reader
i like it a lot. Hopefully keppinger can use the showtime to prove that he deserves a starting job in the infield.
I just worry about Freel. I love his effort and all, but I don't think he's a great player, and I don't think he helps the team win much. He's a below average batter and an overrated base-runner. I worry that the Reds might use him like last year, to give each starter a break every day, so that we're seeing him in the lineup everyday and ugh, that'd be terrible. But hopefully Dusty likes set lineups more than Narron did.
by cokane on Mar 29, 2008 11:23 PM EDT 0 recs
I really don't get the crazy Freel backlash.
He had a bad year last year, no doubt, but he never really got a chance to come out of that due to his head colliding with Norris Hopper and then another injury. I don't think two months of poor performance should override the three years of being a good player he gave us. He can be over-aggressive at times on the basepaths, but that aggression has singlehandedly won the Reds games before as well. And, while he may be more Eric Byrnes than Eric Davis in the outfield, he's still not a bad defender, and he's adequate in the infield as well. If he can go back to his .360 OBP self, and I don't really see any reason why he can't, he'll be worth his contract and everyone is going to go back to loving him.

As a long-time Reds fan
but a first-time poster, I agree that this isn't the worst roster Dusty could've put together--given what he had to work with, anyway. I'm with Geki--I'd prefer Freel over Patterson in a heartbeat, and Paul Bako??--come on, man! Otherwise, though, it could be worse. My fear is that Dusty will make it so.

Is Ross
really an improvement over Bako, though? He will be if the 2006 version shows up, but not the '07 model. Given Dusty's history, what's to say that Patterson will go to make way for a midsummer call-up of Bruce? Isn't that Dusty's MO--give the vets three benefits of the doubt and nail the youngsters to the bench, ability be damned?? I fear Bruce will have to be the second coming of Joe D. for Dusty to give him playing time.

Paul Bako's CAREER has been considerably worse
than Ross was last year. In fact, excluding his 40 AB year in 2005, Bako hasn't had a higher OPS+ than Ross did last season since 1999 -- and even then it was a whopping 7 points higher (and his career high, an OPS+ of 75). Throw in the fact that he's not even a good defender, and it's absolutely amazing to me that Paul Bako is still employed by major league baseball teams. If I were to make a list of major league catchers worse than Paul Bako, there would be one name on it -- Chad Moeller.

Fuck Dusty Baker.
According to the Fay, Votto may have made the team but Hatteberg is still gonna be our starting 1B. Pathetic.
"(The starting first baseman) is whoever's playing that day. Joey Votto has a great upside," Baker said. "But Hatteberg had a great spring. We'll go with matchups. (The seven spot) is an important spot in the lineup. Adam Dunn had an OK spring. Edwin (Encarnacion) struggled."
Obviously, what Adam Dunn and Edwin Encarnacion did has a lot to do with who should start at 1B. Dusty is a two-faced piece of shit and I hope he gets run over.

If Votto makes the team to rot away on the bench, then D-Bakes should be fired. It's really that simple.

On Harang
Am I the only one who is worried he will start to regress? I hope I am wrong, but I am putting him on a trajectory to begin to decend into an innning eater type. I am guessing pessimistic about him, and I am guessing he will have shoulder trouble, and spend about 6 weeks on the DL, and put up an ERA in the high 4's, and his strikeouts will drop. This is just a feeling in my gut.

Hopefully its just gas...
That feeling in your gut. If we have any chance to compete in the Central, a healthy Harang is a necessity. Although he has passed his so-called "prime years" as they say. He has improved his numbers each of the last three years in terms of ERA and innings and has been able to stay relatively healthy (knock on wood). That being said, his numbers can't continue to improve forever and eventually he will level off. But I don't see any tell tale signs that he will have such a significant drop-off that you instictively invision through your bowels.

Reminds me...
I thought I posted a comment here in response to Justin's feeling in his gut. So if you see a cheap shot at the ONU cafeteria floating around in some arbitrary spot on Red Reporter, well.. that's it.
