Reds Cut Bray, 2 Others
From MLB.com Press Pass:
Today the Reds returned Rule V draftee LHP Jose Capellan to the Boston Red Sox, Optioned LHP Bill Bray to Triple-A Louisville, and reassigned INF Andy Phillips to Minor League Camp.
Yesterday the Reds reassigned INF Andy Green to Minor League Camp.
Some thoughts. What a waste of 25 G the Reds dropped on Capellan. Did the dude even get in a game? I hope Phillips accepts the assignment and sticks with the Reds, he's a nice insurance policy if we get a vicious hit from the injury bug.
About Bray, I'm dissapointed in the move. Except one bad outing, he was real solid all spring. In fact, he has been our best Lefty from the pen by far. Either the Reds are concerned about his health some, or they really like Kent Mercker. Sorry Wayne, no way I'd keep Kent over Bray. If the Reds really were offered Wes Helms for Stanton and did not accept the deal, I think it's a 3 and a half million dollar mistake by Wayne.

Well... that sucks
If you read the article in the Enquirer this morning, it sounds like the choice was between Stanton and Bray. Even though Bray would be clearly more valuable to the team, in my opinion (and Erardi's I think), it seems the Reds weren't ready to swallow Stanton's contract just yet. Meanwhile, Mercker makes the team because Dusty likes him. Gulp!

Dusty doesn't seem to like Bray
he is concerned about Bray's health.
Does he even know his team?
Last year Bray missed most of spring training with a broken finger. He didn't get a chance to ready himself until April or May I think, and he while he was preparing to pitch he hurt his shoulder, maybe he tried to get ready too fast. His shoulder was fine by the end of June or so, and it took him 4 to 6 weeks to get ready, and he was than promoted. His finger injury was just one of those things, and has nothing to do with durability.
My guess is if Stanton sucks he will be cut quickly, and we will see Bray in the bullpen.

To be fair to Dusty
The shoulder thing certainly counts as an injury issue, and Bray was hurt again this spring (though that appears to have been another flukish type deal).
Still, with his comments after Bruce had one very small injury that Dusty made a huge deal of, I wouldn't so much as want to stub my toe on his watch. Dusty's like a hypochondriac for other people.

well andy phillips couldn't be on the opening day roster
because he cannot be on the active roster for the next 10 days unless there is an injury to another player who plays his position.

Another Opening Day with Mike Stanton on the roster.
At least it wasn't Grady Little.

Who runs Bartertown?
Griffey needs to let Hairston know there's only room for one Junior on this team (and barely that many). Two Juniors go in to an IHOP, one comes out.

Others still lurking in the NRIs
Patterson (made it)
Cabrera
Bako (makes it if Ross can't play)
Mercker
Lincoln
Brower (why?)
Cueto (made it)
That puts 32 left in camp. Is that right?

Brower
I am guessing Brower is there now just to suck up some innings. The innings he got earlier could have been giving ot the Rule V guys.

This one's on Wayne
I like much of what Wayne Krivsky has done with this team, but two members of the bullpen, Affeldt and Stanton, are there for contractual reasons only. The onus for bad contracts falls on the GM.

Agree.
There are three occupants Designated Roster Mismanagement Spots on the team currently:
1. Juan Castro.
2. Mike Stinkton.
3. Jeremy Affeldt.
A Designated Roster Mismanagement Spot is a position on the roster that has been specifically reserved for people Waynerhead should not have signed but signed anyway.
At least it wasn't Grady Little.

Kind of OT
But is there a possibility of Norris Hopper not being on the opening day roster as well? He hasn't played in a week due to a family emergency. That situation could be playing into the fact there is still a lot of guys in camp.

Andy Phillips
He was signed to a minor league deal, and was not on the roster. So I don't think he has a choice. He has to report to Triple-A. Unless his contract has an opt-out clause.
Bubba had a major league deal last year, and was on the roster, so he had to clear waivers and accept assignment to the minors before they could send him to Louisville. I don't think that's the case with Andy.
