Is Today's Lineup THE Lineup?
Here's the lineup from Fay. Its Reds v. Twins starting right now!
Corey Patterson, CF
Jeff Keppinger, SS
Ken Griffey Jr., RF
Brandon Phillips, 2B
Adam Dunn, LF
Edwin Encarnacion, 3B
Joey Votto, 1B
David Ross, C
Bronson Arroyo, P
I'd say this looks as good as its going to get. I wouldn't mind seeing this lineup rolled out next Monday (with Harang, of course.)
And now that I've learned how to do it, here's the Gameday link too.

Meanwhile... Bronson's been having a pretty good spring
With all the focus on Cueto, Volquez and David Bailey, Bronson's solid spring has kind of gone unnoticed. Two more Ks as Bronson gets through the first inning.
The season doesn't start until the Cincinnati Reds take the field! Reclaim The Opener!!
Hopefully he can avoid those 129 pitch starts this year
Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!
not a bad line up
as long as Patterson doesn't turn into Royce Clayton. And as long as the defense just makes the routine plays they should be ok.
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
I do like how the new posts just pop up
This will be interesting during our first real game thread when the posts start flying.

I keep feeling like I need to refresh the page
it'll take some getting used to, but I think the game threads will fly this year.
Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!
I guess there's no hope of changing Grif's spot in the lineup
I sure would like to see him 5th or 6th. and move BP to the 3 hole, Dunn to 4th. This line up appears to be noticeably less less potent w/out Josh Hamilton. At least Casto isn't starting at SS.
"Men are ruled, this minute by the clock, by liars who refuse them news, and by fools who cannot govern. G.K. Chesterton 1917
Yeah, I'm betting we see that on opening day.
We might end up getting Hatteberg in place of Votto or Castro in place of Kepp, but at the very least, that is the order that the positions will be in.
Honestly, I'm kind of surprised Dusty doesn't have the 1B hitting clean up. Isn't that how it's supposed to work?
If the 1B wasn't left-handed
You could almost guarantee that's the order he would use.
Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!
Patterson = Womack?
Remember a few years back when Tony Womack was the opening day 2nd baseman? That was my first thought when Patterson was signed. Hoepfully we won't have a repeat performance!

any word on when final cuts are?
I'd think they would want to get matters finalized asap. ANy more word on dumping Stanton on the Phillies?
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
Dusty said last week
that it may happen that the last cuts won't happen until Sunday even.
Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!
seems a little unfair to all involved
You have to believe that they know exactly who is staying. Other than a late injury that is.
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
Why are they taking so long?
Are the decisions really that difficult? And I see the Stanton for Wes Helms rumors. Wouldn't Helms just help to block Votto since he can play 1B and 3B?
by cesarhernandez on Mar 27, 2008 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Or could Helms
actually steal playing time from Edwin? Ugh....
by cesarhernandez on Mar 27, 2008 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions
I wonder if Hatteberg isn't being shopped as well
and that's why the deal hasn't happened. Votto and Helms would be a pretty good pairing at first.
Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!
agreed
Hatte could actually bring something of decent value in return.
Hope Springs Eternal! Go Reds
Seems like he could bring a couple of Double-A relievers
isn't that about what they got for Conine last year?
Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!
Just looked at Hal McCoy's blog
He said the Phillies offered Helms for Stanton, but the Reds said no.
by cesarhernandez on Mar 27, 2008 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions
Ugh.
Really ugh.
Seriously, has Wayne ever really admitted to making a mistake? Not even Dusty wants Stanton around. We'll save $600K on Helms and, more importantly, it's not Mike Stanton.
Marty and tHom are railing on EdE
Basically saying that he looks terrible and that doesn't look good for him going into the regular season. Of course, he looked awesome last Spring Training and sucked out loud for the month of April.
Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!
Ugh
Marty and tHom are giving me a headache. tHom seems to step up the dramatics when he works with his dad. Everything is the worst thing ever. And this time they're talking about the third catcher, which I agree with but I'm thinking of changing my opinion because I can't stand their tone.
Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!
We have no tix yet
probably buy them at the stadium and sit wherever. It was empty last year so we moved down to the field level early on.
Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!
Awesome!
I hope you can. Maybe you can drag RM, FVA, and others down with you.
Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!
Should be
it hasn't changed for a couple of years. As long as it's a 513 number and not a 734 number, it should be right. I can't remember if I still had my Ann Arbor phone at the first RR get together.
Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!
Father and Son
I love it when they work together... it's an interesting dynamic. Of course, it's not as fun as Marty and the Cowboy.
They loves them some Keppinger
but now tHom is essentially saying, without ostensibly stating it, that Dunn should be batting second.
Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!
He probably wasn't thinking it outright
but he was essentially saying that TLR likes to bat a power bat second, and he seemed to think it worked. I probably read batting Dunn 2nd into it, but really, I think Dunn is a perfect 2-hole hitter.
Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!
Anything to get him more at bats...
Although with Corey Patterson batting leadoff and a 7-8 that includes the catcher and Juan Casto, he probably won't see many baserunners on at that spot.

Hmm...
I really like Keppinger there.
I can't remember what was Dunn's walks like when he was in the #2 hole? Did he walk as much?
Not that it matters much
because these are small splits spread over numerous seasons and could be coincidentally aligned with lucky streaks, but Dunn's batting line from the 2-hole is: .278/.388/.554. His walk rate is about 5% lower from the 2-hole compared to from the 5-hole.
Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!
Wow.. 6Ks thru 5 innings

wiki
I've been meaning to do some cleaning up on the wiki before the season starts. There's so much stuff that's not really applicable that should be hidden or even done away with. A newbie wanting to find out what some nickname means shouldn't have to wade through stuff about Todd Hollandsworth.
And now the how-to html stuff is pretty much pointless.
I think it would be a good idea
maybe create an archive section and move all of the old stuff there. That might help us find what stuff is missing.

Today the Reds returned to the Red Sox Rule 5 Draft selection LHP Jose Capellan, optioned to Class AAA Louisville LHP Bill Bray and reassigned to minor league camp IF Andy Phillips...the Reds have 31 healthy players remaining in camp.

I'm happy about not having to stash Capellan
He seemed like a promising pitcher, but this wasn't the right fit for him. With Bray going to Louisville, does that mean that Mercker is likely to make the team? I thought Bray had a decent spring, but he was also injured for the first half of it, so I'm happy to let him work out any kinks in Kentucky.
Despite his good spring and the enthusiasm of some of the posters on here, if Andy Phillips going to the minors means we get a full season of Joey Votto, then I am 100% behind the move.
by Brendanukkah on Mar 28, 2008 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions
Andy Phillips
was never in competition with Votto. They aren't going to use Votto as a bench player.
I notice Hairston and Cabrera have not been cut. I can only assume they are more interested in defense than offense. Understandable, for a bench guy.
Andy's problem has always been that he's a "tweener." Bat not quite good enough for 1B, glove not good enough for any other positions.
Or maybe they just want a veteran. Dusty said something about veterans and how they aren't bothered by failure, and that's what he's looking for in a utility guy.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
If they are interested in defense
the Cabrera is out. That's not his specialty.
Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!
He is better with the glove than Andy
Andy's really only played 1B in the big leagues. And was below average at it, at least according to BP's "rate." (For the most part, I like BP's rate, but I was surprised at how low Andy's rate is. I'm not sure if his range is smaller than it appears, or if we're just so used to bad first basemen in NY that Andy looks good in comparison.)
Cabrera has played SS and CF, which I seriously doubt anyone would try with Andy.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
I guess that means that Stanton's not going anywhere.
Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!
At least not for a month or so.
Maybe the Phils (or another team) will want to really buffer their bullpen with a veteran arm once the season starts and the races are close, or one of their relievers gets hurt. Maybe they'll be willing to part with a little more (although I could live with Wes Helms). Or maybe Stanton will just pitch so badly that Castellini will have no joice but to jettison his fat ass into space and eat the contract, a la Rheal Cormier.
