Welcome to the new Red Reporter and SB Nation
Good morning Red Reporter users! This change has been a long time in the works, and I'm pretty excited to see it go live. Change can be tough sometimes, especially when you are as settled in to a format as most of us were with the old Red Reporter, but I think you guys are really going to enjoy this.
Definitely leave questions and concerns in the comment thread below, we're lucky enough to have tech guys checking in all day today to answer our questions.
I hope you guys like, and, as always, thanks for reading.
JD
Hey Red Reporter,
Today is the big day. We've switched your community over to the new SB Nation sports blog platform. My name is Trei, and I'm here to help you get adjusted to the new home we've built for you. If you have questions or trouble with the new system, post a comment in this thread and myself or one of the team (lovitt, sixfoot6 or odacrem) will try to point you in the right direction.
Before we begin, I want to let you know that Red Reporter is one of the first blogs in the SB Nation family to make this transition. We still consider this a beta platform, so don't be surprised if you find a few bugs or if everything isn't exactly right yet. We hope you'll take the time to report any problems you encounter at bugreport@sbnation.com.
Please take a few minutes to read about what's new below. But if you just can't wait to jump in, here are some quick things to check out:

- Sign up for your SB Nation network account and claim your old blog accounts
- Once you're logged in, press your Z key in any thread with new comments
- Explore your dashboard and setup your profile
- Read the guide to the new FanPost editor
- Install the FanShot bookmarklet and post videos to Red Reporter from YouTube or images from Flickr
- Click the "Rec" button on posts and comments to help other people find the good stuff.
What Has Changed
SB Nation Network Accounts - the Big Change
Readers across all of our blogs told us they wanted one account to use on every SB Nation blog. To make this work, we're requiring that everyone create a new SB Nation network account. In most cases you should be able to keep your old username, but a few of you may have to choose something new, since every other community in SB Nation will be going through this same transition. We tried to be as fair as possible in deciding who gets to keep which name, using a formula that takes into account length of membership and frequency of activity.
We want to make it as easy as possible for you to participate on all of our blogs, but we don't want to encourage everyone to start visiting rival team blogs and initiating flame wars. To maintain friendly communities we ask that you explicitly join each blog in order to participate. It's a two-click process, but it does means accepting each blog's community guidelines. Just as you join each blog individually, you can be banned on each blog individually.
You can claim old accounts from multiple SB Nation blogs, and your new username will be retroactively attached to all your old comments and diaries. So now you'll be able to access all your writings from your single profile page... like magic.
To get started, click here to claim your old blog accounts and create a new SB Nation network account.
FanPosts (the Section Formerly Known as Diaries)
We changed their name. Why? Because we took this major upgrade as an opportunity to leave behind some vocabulary that never made much sense for a sports blog. SB Nation is the network of, by and for fans, and these are the blog posts we make. So we call them FanPosts. When you're at a bar telling someone to check out your online sports opinions, you don't have to suggest they read your diary.
FanPosts are displayed differently on the homepage - we include your avatar to give more credit for the time you spend writing great posts. The new post editor has a WYSIWYG view that provides easy formatting. It also auto-saves drafts so you don't have to worry about losing your work when you compose a post within the web browser. And you can now associate teams, players and games with your posts: these tools promote your FanPosts on our new team, player and game pages - across the entire network.
The new system does not work like the old diary editor. For example, in HTML mode the new editor doesn't auto-create a new paragraph from two line breaks. But it does offer a whole array of new features. Look for the blinking help button on the right side of the FanPost editor for quick tips, and take a look at our full guide to writing FanPosts on the new platform.
IMPORTANT - if you write your posts in Microsoft Word or some other off-line editor, you will get the most reliable behavior if you cut & paste your post into the HTML view of the FanPost editor. And if you do that, remember to wrap <p></p> tags around each paragraph so your text doesn't run together.
Visual Redesign
This one is probably the most obvious change of all. Like other major websites working to improve readability for their audience, we've adopted a fixed-width layout optimized for the 1024 x 768 resolution used by the majority of Red Reporter and SB Nation network users. Use the switcher below the user menu if you prefer the wider layout designed for 1280 monitors. We've introduced a top navigation bar with quick links into old and new sections of the site. We also polished a few edges, made some things larger, others smaller and moved a few boxes here and there. More changes and adjustments to come.
Search
We've completely replaced the old search engine with a new one. We're excited to make it easier to find old posts and comments, but we've only taken our first pass on the tools we're offering. We're focused on making search even better than what you had before, so please know that we're aware search is missing key features and we're working on it.
What's New
Schedule, Scores, Stats and Roster
Red Reporter now has all the basic information about the Cincinnati Reds and hundreds of other teams. During games you'll see a regularly updated line score, and as the season progresses we'll track team stat totals and leaders. This is just our first step, so look for us to publish more detailed and archival stats in the future. The best part about all this sports data is that we've integrated it directly into the blog so. We now have special pages that aggregate all blog posts written about games, players and teams.
Recommending FanPosts
Some writing deserves more attention and more conversation. If you want to bump a FanPost up to the top and keep it there for awhile, just click the 'Rec' link under the body of the post. When a FanPost receives enough recommendations it will make the recommended list.
Auto-refreshing Comments
You no longer need to refresh the page to see new comments. If you're logged in, new comments will automatically appear on the page every few seconds. When you post a comment, the page will not refresh either. If you want to quickly cycle through all the new comments, you can press the C key on your keyboard. Unmark a new comment after you've read it with the X key. And use the Z key if you want to umark comments as you're cycling through them.
As you use these shortcuts to cycle through comments, press the R key to reply to the current comment. All these helpful keyboard shortcuts are listed at the top of each comments section for reference.
Recommending Comments
Now you can reward those folks who take the time to look up stats and make smart arguments in the comments. Next to each comment there is an 'actions' link that you can click to find the recommend and flag options.
Flagging Comments
To help the moderators on a site, we've built-in tools that let you flag comments that are spam, trolling or just plain inappropriate. Only moderators can see those flags.
FanShots
Many members of the community just want to post that one link, video, photo or quote, but don't need a full FanPost. We've got you covered: FanShots let you share YouTube videos, Flickr or PhotoBucket photos, quotes from articles, portions of chat transcripts, top 5 lists and simple links. If it's a video or image we'll put a thumbnail on the homepage when you post it.
For those of you who are experienced internet hunter-gatherers of Cincinnati Reds material, install the bookmarklet onto the links bar of your browser and share FanShots with the community from wherever on the web you find that killer quote or photo.
Archives
It's much easier to find that post about a certain deadline trade or prospect retro feature. You can browse by year and month.
Avatars
Upload an image so folks can see your custom avatar on your profile, your FanPosts, and all your comments.
Network Profiles
Now that we have unified SB Nation network accounts, your profile will be your central hub for all of your activity on any blogs where you are a member.
Network bar
The top bar stays with you on all SB Nation blogs. It's a quick way to login and logout. When you're logged in, you'll see your avatar and screen name which links to your profile. The icon to the right leads to your Dashboard area where you can edit your settings, profile, account details and any FanPosts or FanShots you've published. As we add more blogs to the new SB Nation network, the My Blogs menu will be a handy way to navigate between the blogs you've joined.
-------
There are plenty more small changes and additions we've made, so please take a careful look around and explore this new system. We appreciate your patience and hope you'll help us improve the new platform for this and all the other SB Nation blogs.
And in case you missed it, you'll want to start by claiming your old blog accounts and creating a new SB Nation network account.

give it a little time
We're finding it takes people a little time to get used to the look and functionality of things.
And we don't hate simplicity - many of the features and much of the tech we've introduced is designed to make things simpler. ;-) If you have specific suggestions about anything that you feel is overly complex, we'd love to hear it.

It just looks too cluttered to me.
There's an overabundance of things going on on the screen and the placement of things seems rather...disproportionate.
Also, the name FanPosts is bloody stupid.
Don't get me wrong, there are things I like -- The connection of accounts across SBN is lovely, and the FanShots idea is nice (even if that name is also stupid). The auto-refresh is nice as well. But I just don't see why nice, additional features need to come with a significantly less navigable eyesore. I feel the focus of a blog should be on the content, and the new format seems to focus on itself instead.
And seriously, FanPosts is just an awful name.

There is a wide screen version
In case you haven't seen it. On the main page, it is up in the left hand corner of the menus. On this page it's on the top, right hand side. It helps the clutter a little, though it doesn't fix everything.

impressive!
RR is something like the 18th SB Nation blog to be migrated, and I believe this is the first time we've seen a comment cross the Rec threshold. And y'all did it yourselves, because of something you believed in. I feel proud!
Give me some time and I'll figure out how to change the blockquote / posting color to a shade of gray. Currently our color scheme system creates this tint as a lighter shade of another value... so I'll need to fiddle around to sort it out, since there's not currently any black or gray anywhere.

Search
Maybe I'm not looking in the right place, but it seems like the search function only returns front page posts, not fandiaryposts. Sounds like it's in an early stage, but the ability to filter by author or time period would be nifty.
It's kind of a losing effort since Google will always be the best way to search the site.

Now that I've looked around
Some things that I know will affect a lot of the past posts/comments on the site:
* Can we get the code tag formatting back? I've used that A LOT to post tabular data and I know others frequently use it too. This is a big one for me.
* I'm not a big fan of the blockquote box and I've noticed some places where we have pictures that are now overlapping the boxes on posts. I'm not a CSS whiz, so I don't know if it's possible, but is there a way to get the box to wrap to images much like the text does?
* To help the cluttered feel a bit, you could probably just remove the avatars from the fanposts section and give that space back to the main middle section of the blog. My least favorite thing about the new design is that it kinda feels like the blog posts are just crammed into all of the other stuff rather than the other stuff being built around the main blog. I know the other stuff is what makes the money, but from a user experience it detracts from the site a bit.
* I love all of the new functionality. I'm a big fan of the highlighted new comments and the keyboard navigation within the posts. I love common user id for all of the SBN sites - it will make me more likely to visit the other sites and comment since it is so easy to join a new site. I am concerned about people flaming each other on rival sites, but hopefully that won't be a problem.
In general, I like it. It will take some getting used to, but the old design was definitely getting stale.

I just noticed
that you can turn off avatars in the Settings area, but I kind of like them in the comments, just not on the side menu. It's picky, I know, but maybe you can have the option to have it one place, the other, both, or neither? Just a suggestion.

thanks for the feedback
Appreciate your taking the time. I'll address each of your points:
* I'd strongly encourage you wrap tabular data in [pre] tags rather than the [code] tags moving forward, as [code] is one of those old legacy tags, like [center], some browsers won't pay attention to as time goes on. I'll also log a bug to style [code] tags so that they behave like they used to in legacy posts.
* The blockquote float thing has beena bit frustrating. We'll be continuing to clean up entry formatting and I'll try to address this.
* I like the idea of a separate dropdown for comment avatars vs widget avatars - I'll mention this to the team.
* We're hoping everyone feels the same way about comments and about the common experience across blogs. We've tried to build tools that encourage discussion without diluting the sense of true community, which is the binding force on a site like this. The big thing to remember is that the existing members of your community have real power - you can flag comments and posts by trolls at any time to bring them to the attention of the RR bloggers. You can set up polls and recommend posts with good ideas to bring them network-wide attention so that problems get solved. We also have a mechanism in place where the bloggers can set a "probation" period, so folks need to wait a certain amount of time before they can comment.
Anyway, thanks for your input and for your patience while we try to balance bug fixes, feature requests and new blog rollouts ;)

Here's the second thing I'd change..
Each "front paged" FanPost's "comment count" should be positioned immediately under the title of the FanPost and the author's name.
I'm not saying that the "comment count" shouldn't also be positioned where it currently is (at the end of each FanPost), just that once a reader has read a lengthy FanPost and then later in the day returns to the site, the reader then typically wants to see if any new comments have been added to the FanPost. And it would be handy if the reader could see that information without having to scroll to the bottom of the FanPost.
by Fat Vegas Alan on Mar 27, 2008 9:59 AM EDT 1 recs
You're the first user to suggest this
but we've discussed this idea internally, and I tend to agree. We're taking a second look at entry layout, so expect to see this addressed.

Is it just because I use Firefox...
or is there a reason for the ~2 inches of total blank space right below the site title at the top of the screen and the ~4 inches right below the search box?
Another thing I'm not a fan of is not having an immediate button to "submit", and instead having to go through a preview screen. I'm sure Justin agrees with me.

Though you're the first to mention it.

While I'm aware of the function of the preview button,
I find it to be unnecessary. Those that most need the preview button to review their posts are also the ones who are going to skip right through it, and meanwhile the people who are actually capable of typing what they want on the first try, which generally seems to encompass all but about three people on this site, get to wait longer and click unnecessary amounts of buttons to post what they want. I'm not saying to eliminate the preview feature, but there's really no reason not to have both a submit and a preview function as there was in the past.

the preview button
...is something that's been brought up on almost all of the blogs that have migrated to the new platform. the development team is listening to these requests. but there are also folks who appreciate the mandatory preview...
I've gotten in the habit of posting comments quickly by hitting Tab / Return / Return. It's a quick way to cycle through the unnecessary mouse clicks, and if I need to look things over I have a moment between the two Returns before my comment goes up.

an actual answer
Geki, we hear you, and we've heard a number of other people who have requested that the preview button be removed or be made optional. People who make this request are passionate about it, but for every users that complains there seem to be at least 50 users who don't mind (or who appreciate the preview).
We're definitely considering making Preview optional, or implementing some creative Edit Comment functionality. But it's relatively low on our list compared to other priorities (speeding up load times, improving search, better documentation, launching 110 other blogs). But we'll address the issue again at some point in the future if it continues to be a problem.
And I'm sorry that it took a full day for me to respond to your request - we'll be checking back here from time to time, but not as frequently as we did during the first day after launch. The new SB Nation just keeps growing ;)

That's just the thing.
A preview option and a submit option aren't mutually exclusive. The people who don't mind or appreciate the preview, to put it simply, don't fucking matter. It won't affect them in any way, as they'll still be able to use the preview feature if they happen to like it. Meanwhile, the (apparently copious) people who find it to be a stupid, arbitrary "feature" are punished. Maybe this is different on other blogs, but on RR, we've really never had any trouble with people making unintelligible posts -- and, as I stated earlier, the people who make unintelligible posts are the ones who are least likely of all to use a preview feature.
And seriously, I get that you can use keyboard combinations to post quicker than mouse clicks. You know what's faster and way easier than that? Not having to preview at all. I like a lot of the other features you guys have added and my initial reaction was a bit harsher than it should have been, but now I'm just getting irritated. You removed something that was a very convenient feature (and still haven't explained why) and replaced it with something that is obnoxious, unnecessary, and arbitrary.
First and foremost, I (and just about everyone else) come to Red Reporter so I can talk about baseball. Hindering the ability to actually do that shouldn't have happened to begin with, and now that you're essentially refusing to fix it, at least in anything resembling a timely manner. I don't want a submit button in six months, I want a submit button by opening day so our game threads aren't forced to suffer from stupidity. Adding an improved search function and launching other blogs is something that should happen, but maybe you should fix the biggest problem you've got before going about that. As you said, people at every blog have complained about the lack of an ability to submit. Surely that tips you off about something, and as I said, what the objectors say in this case doesn't really matter because it doesn't have any affect at all on them. I don't go and ask my neighbor what I should have for dinner, and you shouldn't ask people who have nothing to do with a debate what they think about it and then use their decision to justify what appears to me as little more than Krivskyitis, otherwise known as the inability to admit that you're wrong.
Give back the submit button you took away for absolutely no reason or incur a barrage of insults and dissatisfaction with your very incomplete work. One might question why you would even bother launching this with so many things incomplete, but I'm going to let that slide for now and just tell you to GIVE ME A SUBMIT BUTTON. PREVIEW SUCKS BALLS.

You're making a great case here.
Hey, I'm sorry that my earlier response added to your frustration. As I said above, we're paying attention to the most common feedback. This one is up there.
As Trei said in this introduction, the SB nation 2.0 platform is still in beta. We had a month-long blogger-only beta test that brought a lot of problems to light. But there's really no other way to find bugs and hangups and ideas for better features than to let thousands of sports fans hammer on the application. That's where we're at now - and all we want to do is make it easy for y'all to talk about baseball. If enough people agree that Preview is inhibiting that, we'll remove it. Originally mandatory Preview was something that many bloggers requested, as a way to address a common complain that there's no way to edit comments. If enough people agree that it sucks, we'll change it.
The first blog on the new platform launched about 6 weeks ago. If you'll indulge me for a moment, here's a list of the most common "your biggest problem" complaints since then.
1. Comments are too busy looking, and confusing.
2. Signup is confusing. I want my username!
3. The site is too narrow. What's with this wasted space?
4. Avatars suck! Get rid of avatars.
5. The pages could load more quickly.
6. Search and search results aren't thorough enough.
We addressed number 1 three days after launching the first blog, redesigning comments completely. Three weeks ago we deployed an entirely new sign up / claim interface, which hopefully you had a good experience with. On Tuesday of this week we added a layout width switcher, made avatars an optional User Setting, and implemented a round of changes to speed up performance. We're still working to make things faster.
What I'm hoping to explain to you (in my long-winded way) is that we've been focused on addressing the most frequent feedback, and that we've managed to address most of it pretty quickly. Your submit button is on the list, I promise.
Thanks for your patience with all of this. We are not the Borg.

Just want to agree with Geki
I don't feel as strongly as he does, but it is rather annoying. In game threads many comments are as simple as "Home run!" Why force a preview on that?
It doesn't seem like a fix to the complaint about editable comments. People always could preview comments. Given time I think I'll be as pissed off as Geki.

We were wrong.
And you were right. Prepare yourself for a non-preview post button, which we'll put in place in the next few days. We've decided that the original argument for mandatory preview doesn't hold.
Reds win! We have been assimilated.
Thanks for pushing on this.
