Camo Unis

In the latest Uni-Watch on Espn.com it is mentioned that the Reds will be wearing a Camoflauged uniform similar to the one the Padres wear occasionally on July 5th against the Nationals.  No Idea what these will look like.  I assume they'll be green like the Pads' but who knows.

What kind of uni-related promotions would you like to see?  I'd like to see the Reds throwback to the mid-70s era uniforms a few times a year.  Any idea if there are plans for this when we play the Red Sox on that Saturday Fox game?

Camo unis?
I'm sorry... maybe I'm a traitorous, un-American, baby-killing sinner, but that is a terrible idea!  It seems rather disrespectful to me.
Quick! Somebody make a Cincinnati loves Ken Griffey Jr. too! video

It is.
Disrespectful and misguided.

But that's a part of who we are right now.  And by "we" I mean Americans.  Eatin'-bugs-on-TV Americans.

Throwbacks
I usually like throwbacks.  Lord knows the Reds have a number of old uniforms to choose from.  Here's the beginning of the Reds uniform database at the HoF.  It's a fun site to fool around with - every major league uniform in history.

I like 1957 and 1969.

Let's stay away from 1936.

On a similar note, I've heard a theory that says you can judge a franchise's success by the number of times they've changed their uniforms.  The fewer changes, the better the franchise.  That theory would probably put the Reds in the middle of the pack, historically.

Youth wins games; veteran presence wins championships.

69
I think our current unis are based on the 69 version.  Font is different for the number and nameplate, and theres some shadowing, but other than that very similar.

Uniform change theory
I like that theory. Also, if you notice, a team will rarely change it's uniform/logo/cap when they are doing well... they always change it when the team is bad, attendance is down, they they need to sell merchandise.

I wonder what the Reds overall record was when they were wearing the black trimmed unis and caps?

by Deaner on Mar 26, 2008 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

I dunno
The Diamondbacks usually do pretty well.  And they've changed their uniforms a number of times.  The Indians have also made a number of logo changes and have been a consistently good team for over a decade (although of course not winning the Series).  The Angels won a World Series, then adopted the official dumbest name in sports, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

I kind of feel like I'm picking on you today, and I apologize for that, but c'mon.  Traditions can change.  More money isn't always a bad thing.  And "the good old days" were not intrinsically better.  Get with the now!

The Louisville Bats
wore camouflage jerseys on Flag Day last year.  They were auctioned off to benefit the children of US service members killed in the line of duty.

They also wore pink jerseys for breast cancer awareness.  I liked the pink jerseys.  Takes a real man to wear pink.  :-)

by BubbaFan on Mar 25, 2008 10:18 AM EDT reply actions

Interesting point
If the uniforms are auctioned off with the proceeds going to benefit veterans, that's one thing.  I'd be okay with that.  I'd think wearing them was stupid, but at least it would be in aid of a good cause.

Oh, and hanging out in Georgetown for any length of time will quickly rid you of your illusion that it takes a real man to wear pink.  Turns out it just takes a real assbag to wear pink (and pop that shit, brah!).  That's why I rock the purple shirt.

The pink bats were very cool though.  I bought one for my mother for Mother's Day last year.

Camo unis
I hate them more than the designated hitter.  Why, oh why is this a good idea?  I mean, I sort of get it why San Diego does it, since there's a huge military presence there, but Cinci just has... what?  Proximity to deer hunters and Dudley Brothers fans?  Is the camo going to be red?  I would prefer throwback uniforms along the lines of the original Cincinnati Red Stockings.  Like 19th century style.  Or perhaps Bid McPhee Mustache Night, and all the players have to wear a mustache, like so.

It also says 34 Red Seaters total.

I know Perez had at least one as did Concepcion.

Camo Uni's
I don't like the idea, even with the proceeds going to charity. Sew a patch on a regular jersey and let it go at that.

Or go with some special shoe like the NCAA basketball coaches wear for cancer awareness.

I like the pink bats for Breast Cancer though.

Throw back nights 1975 when ESPN Sox come to town would be good. Also do it up right by bringing back the Big Red Machine. Also maybe Yaz and a couple of the Sox.

Classy Cardinals Reprise!

I hope to construct a music video montage of classy St. Louis Cardinal moments, perhaps setting it to Mariah Carey's "Hero."

Please take a moment to find the classiest incidents in recent Cardinal history, and link to an article covering the event, or video or pictures if you can find them. And if you just have a ridiculous photo of a recent Cardinal, please post a link here to the highest resolution image you can find.
