I'm sorry
I just can't like Patterson. I don't care what he hits, how well he plays or how many bases he steals. He's impeding Bruce and turning Freel into an overpaid scrub. Not to mention his signing has terrified me that The Neifi Not To Be Named will end up in a Reds uniform before it's all said and done.

I like this kind of problem.
Examples of problems I do not like (hypothetically speaking):
  1.  Castro or Clayton to start at SS?
  2.  What should we do with Corey Patterson now that he's signed?
  3.  Who is the least bad fifth starter among Bobby Livingston, Eric Milton, Tom Shearn, Phil Dumatrait and Kirk Saarlooser?
  4.  There are two men on base in the bottom of the 7th, and the Reds are only down by one run.  Which reliever do you put in?  Mike Stanton, Rheal Cormier, Todd Coffey, Victor Santos, Gary McJeffsky or Ricky Stone?
  5.  In a tie game in the bottom of the 16th inning, the other team has men on first and second with no one out, and you have Ryan Howard at the plate.  Do you intentionally walk him?
As I said, this is a high-class problem.
At least it wasn't Grady Little.

remember that the lead off position gets about 45 more at bats a year than the 5 hole hitter.

I am awful at picking up pitchers mechanics
and as my few little league innigns will tell you, awful at repeating them...

I also have no TV in this hell otherwise known as Ada, OH.

Was Homer Bailey strugling to repeat himself>  He sailed right through the first two innings, and he lost his control after that.

The Dusty path to the World Series! (This is not an endorsement.)

by justin0070000 on Mar 24, 2008 8:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I wouldn't say he sailed through
the first 2 innings. His command was better, but his fastball looked pretty hittable to me.

Welsh talked a lot about Homer needing to shorten his stride a little (a la Harang). I'm not sure what I think about that, necessarily, but there is something about his delivery that I've noticed in both starts I've seen this Spring:

Homer's delivery gives hitters a rather long look at the pitch as it comes out of his hand. It was especially evident with Burton following Homer tonight. Burton's first fastball was about 5 mph slower than Homer's, but it seemed to "get on" the hitter more quickly i.e., I think he "hides" his pitch longer in his delivery to the plate than does Homer.

We've heard rumors last season and this Sping about Homer tipping his pitches. I wonder if part of this problem is pitch recognition with his release as well as something in his delivery.

I'm a man of genius. I can afford to drool on you.

he had a decent season working in relief last year
if he is the 4th or 5th man out of the bullpen behind Corderro, Weathers, and hopefully Burton, he will be useful.

Anyone cautiosly optomistic that Coffey will bounce back?  I would like to think he could return to the pitcher he was in 2006 before he was promoted to the closers role.  He couldn't have just lost it completely the way he did.

He threw in 81 games in 2006.  Could last year have been a carry over effect.  He was being used almost every other day.  That can really tax a pitcher after a period of time.

I don't really have any reason to believe this
but right now I'm feeling cautiously optimistic about Coffey.  I think he'll be productive this season.  Maybe because he lost weight, maybe because his spring has been pretty solid.  I was ready to give up on him last season, but spring brings with it hope.  Right now, I'm feeling good about Coffey.
