Just a few days away from Opening Day. After today's moves to cut Coutlangus and Majewski, Krivsky and Co. still have a lot of work ahead of them.
By my last count, the Reds have 39 players on the 40-man roster (not including Livingston). There may be quite a bit more roster-shuffling between now and next Monday since the active players then will all have to be on the 40-man roster keeping in mind that the ones heading north must be on the 25-man.
The way I see it, five non-roster invitees are going to make this team out of spring training (Bako, Mercker, Patterson, Cabera, and most definitely Cueto). Let's say Cueto grabs the open spot on the 40-man. Who else goes to make room for the other four? Can some of them be "designated" or do they have to clear waivers first? Do we take a risk losing some of the younger talent (i.e. McBeth, Dickerson, Janish)?
Barring any other trades, this is my take on the Opening Day roster. Gonzo, Ross, and Belisle will begin the season on the 15-day DL. I see Votto, Homer, Bray, and Hanigan being optioned to AAA with Hairston, Andy Phillips, Brower, Green, Gil, and Lincoln being assigned to minor league camp. We can't afford to keep Capellan on the 25-man so he too is gone. That leaves us with 12 pitchers, 2 catchers, 6 infielders, and 5 outfielders for Opening Day. Please feel free to discuss your opinion.
