Bruce has been cut

According to Fay.

Bet that hasn't happened to him before.

Star-divide

Sorry for posting two diaries in a row, but I hadn't seen anyone else put this up yet.

Roencke, McBeth and Drew T. Anderson cut as well. I think this is probably the right move. I am of the opinion that the Reds are still a year away from challenging for the division. I would love to be wrong of course. That said, this is the year you ease Bruce into it. He is not ready to be the every day CF for this team, so why rush him?

UPDATE: More from the Fay quoting Bruce.

"I'm disappointed," he said. "My goal was to make the team. But I understand they're doing what's in the best interest of me and the team. It's not a slap in the face." "I'll be back. When I am, I'll look back on this day and laugh."

I agree
I see this as only a temporary setback.  He will be with the big club soon enough.  We need him to be a big time player next year.  This year... I'm just not banking on it.

Fuck Corey Patterson.
He shall be the object of my ire this year for being Jay the Bruce's replacement, just as Norris the Intolerably Scrappy was the object of my ire last year for being Dunn's replacement.

All of the guys cut today
are going to make Louisville a pretty fantastic team.  Which in the end is good for us.  I don't mind Bruce being cut.  He's had a good spring, but it wasn't Hamiltonian.  And he'll be back soon.  I also expect to see Roenicke and McBeth sooner rather than later.

I view this as a victory for organizational depth.

by Brendanukkah on Mar 20, 2008 4:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Aye
but have you noticed what the MLB team's bench is starting to look like?  I'll steal from Fay's predicted 25-man roster:
The bench
Norris Hopper
Ryan Freel
Juan Castro
Paul Bako
Andy Green
The skinny: I'm confident on the first four. Green, Jolbert Cabrera, Jerry Gil, Drew Anderson, Jerry Hairston and Andy Phillips all have made strong cases for the 25th man spot.

Now, Fay thinks that Votto will get sent down, but if that happens, the bench really isn't all that strong.  I still think Votto will make it, but with Sea Bass and Ross being hurt, the pickins are slim.

Don't talk back to Darth Vader or he'll getcha!

by Slyde on Mar 20, 2008 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Now I'm as scared as an 8 yr old at a key party
Sending Votto down just seems like a mistake to me.  I'm getting a little sick of platooning at 1B too.  Votto as the starter and Hatteberg on the bench (I'm even willing to switch their roles if need be).  It makes the bench stronger to have both of those professional hitters on the club; I don't care that they're both lefties.

As soon as Sea Bass comes back, drop Castro like an infant covered in baby oil.

P.S.
I don't make myself out to be Dan Brown or anything, but reading through the comments on Fay's blog just makes my brain hurt.  'Nukkah's crush on the Red Reporters is reaffirmed.

We really, really, really
need help behind the plate.

Catching.

I hope that Wayner can package up some of this flotsam and jetsam of the Reds and get just a half-way decent catcher; somebody that can catch and hit -.240-.250.  Bako is NOT the answer, and Valentin is sub-mediocre defensively. But Valentin may catch at least two days out of five if Cueto and Volqwagonz are starters.  That Spanish fly thing.

Bruce will be back, just you wait and see.  He will be a torrent of hitting in AAA, and the numbers will speak! I foresee Patterson starting out HOT, then fading to truly poor hitting by mid-June; a June swoon, if you will. He is, after all, a Cub.

Doesn't surprise me that we've got
VP all over the place on this team.
Patterson, Griffey, Hatteberg, Valentin, Casto,Stanton,Weathers

Lets not rush any of the kids. We lost a lot of games last year with a sold VP lineup, so lets not rush into anything, after all ST is sooo telling. Not to say that Weathers, Hatteberg and Griffey  won't contribute, but even the batting order is tired. It is nice to see Kepp get a shot, but what has Votto got to prove at AAA.

Starting eight
Corey Patterson CF - Whoa Dude
Jeff Keppinger SS
Ken Griffey Jr. RF
Brandon Phillips 2B
Adam Dunn LF
Edwin Encarnacion 3B
Scott Hatteberg 1B
Javier Valentin C
The bench
Norris Hopper
Ryan Freel
Juan Castro- Double whoa dude
Paul Bako- OMG
Andy Green - ST is not MLB
Starting rotation
Aaron Harang
Bronson Arroyo
Johnny Cueto
Edinson Volquez
Josh Fogg
The bullpen
Francisco Cordero
David Weathers
Jared Burton
Mike Stanton - Might surprise me - hope so
Bill Bray
Todd Coffey

No Biggie
I support the move. Bruce has already exceeded expectations with his performance last year. It's remarkable that he came so close to making the roster out of spring traning. He's not long for AAA, though, so long as he maintains the proper attitude. A trade of Freel could change things. Otherwise, I look for him in June.

the Bruce sitch and the Votto sitch
im alright with Bruce starting in AAA.  he's still incredibly young and inexperienced.  how many ABs does he have above A ball?  a few more months in AAA can only help him.  plus there is the benefit of stalling his arb clock.  Votto, on the other hand, should have been up LAST june.  he destroyed AAA all year last year and waited and waited and waited and waited and waited and waited...he is done with AAA like kids today are done with outdoor recreation.  sending him down based on a slow spring training is only going to frustrate him, much like kids today get frustrated when they dont get their gogurt.  it seems to me that wayner has the idea that the bench is only for defensive specialists and dead weight.  stashing a professional hitter like hatteberg on the bench is just unheard of.

"Jay is real close, especially for a man who hasn't had much Minor League experience," Baker said. "It won't take him too long. It's nothing that he did wrong. Just tighten up your game. Experience will do that. Desire and determination will do the rest."

Corey Patterson has pockets full of desire, therefore the job is his.

Bruce will be back
I don't think Bruce going down will make or break this club. Short-term, it won't show any ill effects, Patterson/Freel/Hopper and maybe Gil will be adequete for now.  I'm a little anxious to see what Gil is capable of doing but he reminds me of Mike Kelly, a flash in the pan. Right now as anxious as I am to see Bruce succeed, there must be a reason he is not going north.

Long-term it actually might be a better situation for the Reds. If Patterson actually breaks this his talent but never really produced stereo-type it could solve two problems the reds currently have. 1 starting pitching, if he gets hot it has the possibility of reliving the Jose Guillen/Aaron Harang trade or 2 it gives us a decent outfielder if Griffey or Dunn do not comeback next year.

Yes I corked my bat, but I wear goggle, so I must be cool

I have nothing but man love for Jr.
If he were to have an incredible season I would weep tears of joy and tribute. However, the guy's a bit fragile - its not his fault...if only he'd taken HGH and put on some body fat...well anyway I do worry that Jr. may become injured some AND its not so much that Grif is a candidate for the DL that bothers me nearly so much as who we have to fill in for him while he heals.

Yes look deep into my eyes satyanaas, for there abides man love for Jr.

More cuts
Majik and Coutlangus sent to Louisville.  Majewski is rightly upset:
Majewski was a bit frustrated.

"I would have liked to pitch more," he said. "That's what happens when you've got 34 pitchers in camp. I feel good. I came in in shape. I'll go down there annd work on things."

Yeah, dude.  I mean, how's he supposed to shove it up their asses if you only leave him in there long enough to let them shove it up his ass a bit first?  That's what he gets for being a proper gentleman.

BTW, Majewski's line this spring: 5.2 IP, 12 H, 11 R, 12.71 ERA.
