Cheeky
the USC-K State 6/11 matchup.

fwiw, Carolina has a potentially tough 8-9 matchup.

Good Games
That USC/K-State game is going to be really good. Carolina could get upset by Indiana or Arkansas but I think UNC has a good shot to take it all. Western Kentucky is my biased and hopeful 12-5 upset.

Having watched Arkansas
I'm not too worried about drawing them. I think UNC overwhelms them at every position.

My worry with Indiana is that they have an elite college player in Gordon--you never can tell when that kind of player is involved in a tournament game.

forgot about the hoosiers
they gave up six games ago when sampson was fired. they've been a shell of themselves since.

Redreporter Sportsline bracket
the one from last year is still up, but I don't know how to invite others for this season.  And considering I haven't watching a SINGLE NCAA game this year for the first time in my life, I have no business filling out a bracket.  But I will, and I'll probably win.

Buckeye NIT #1 seed
That is as awesome as a Patterson/Hairston signing.

The Sad thing is...
The season could actually end w/ a loss to UNC-Asheville.  That 7'6" center will eat Koufous alive.  Be a crappy way to see Jamar Butler go out.

that 7-6 center
is dirt. he's less mobile than muresan.

I think they use him pretty well
in terms of rest. His skills and conditioning are vastly improved over last year. He could be dangerous for one game.

Does he
fall down on people much?

That would be dangerous.

As for upsets...
Davidson is the real-deal midmajor.  We'll take out Gonzaga, and prepare to see the 2 seed Hoyas go down if Stephen Curry is hot.  Best shooter in the country.  Not that I'm biased or anything, going here.  Pitt was also impressive in the Big East Tourney.  They could take out Memphis and get to the Final 4

FWIW..
Bob Knight predicted Pitt to win the whole thing.

But he stopped short of saying that it was inevitable and we should lay back and enjoy it.

Davidson
is a real solid team at 4 of 5 positions. With Curry's awesomeness, most of the national media overlook that the Cats have a legit point guard.

Davidson
My brother and sister went to Davidson so there's quite a bit of excitement going on in the Menace household. I'm concerned about Roy Hibbert in round two. Hopefully the Raleigh crowd can help.

by Red Menace on Mar 17, 2008 1:12 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

Well Considering...
that Davidson was allotted all of 125 student tickets and only 400 others, we'll have to hope we get off to a fast start and pull the neutral fans along w/ us.  And the Zags will be tough too.  But yeah, I can see how we're overlooked w/ all our players either foreigners and/or white.  Nice to see we have some Davidson ties in the RR community though besides me, Menace.

ive been wanting to read
that cahill book for a while now.  it just got bumped to the top o' the list.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Mar 17, 2008 5:46 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

I received this book as a high school
graduation present and read through it on my first trip to Ireland in 1998. Cahill is an engaging writer. He takes heat as a "popular" historian, and he's a little cavalier with the facts, but it's an interesting read.

"popular" historian
i love how the academic establishment attempts to slander talented writers.  i think they are secretly just jealous of the sales.  but the fact is they just cant write.  so many of the respected historians couldnt write their way into a paper bag.  into.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Mar 17, 2008 7:14 PM EDT to parent up   0 recs

certainly jealousy
and pettiness animates a cosiderable amount of academic work and criticism, but I do think there is some merit to academic historians' beef with "popular" history. Almost every historical situation confounds the type of coherent narrative needed to keep a general readership interested. There's also the consideration of depth and length of research as well.

I do agree, however, that such charges often sound similar to saying a snack can't be good because it isn't a steak.
