Good grief
Dusty Baker saw the Sunday piece we ran on Sabermatic in the clip package.
"One of guys come up with the computer lineup?" he asked. "That'd go over big. Junior (Griffey) batting seventh. . . "
that was me
And I thought Baker was supposed to be good at getting players to play like a team. :)

If I can't get through to Anonymous, I don't think I can get through to anybody. Time to move to the Himalayas and find a new guru.
Oh, Anonymous, why do you toy with me
I thought the sabermetrics thing made a lot of sense. I particularly like the part that indicates that Kepp should play full-time, platooning at 1B and SS. Makes sense to me.
It is well published that the Red Sox and As follow sabermetrics & it clearly has worked for them over the years.
I thought the article on sabermetrics was very interesting & informative.
But I won't fall for it. You won't break my heart again, Anonymous. I won't let you.

by Fat Vegas Alan on Mar 10, 2008 9:35 PM EDT up reply actions
He got behind early
Looks like he was working on some pitches, but he seemed really frustrated and twitchy and was working way too quickly.
During Abreu's walk, Homer got ahead 1-2 (on some iffy calls) and was afraid to challenge Abreu.
BTW, George and Chris are REALLY high on Johnny Quest.
by Man Mountain on Mar 10, 2008 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions
RE: "twitchy"
That stinks that he wouldn't challenge Abreu. What is the Grapefruit League for if not to throw down with the Yankees. Of course, I guess he may be thinking his job is on the line. And of course, if he thinks his job is on the line and he's not ready and willing to challenge Abreu, well...
by Fat Vegas Alan on Mar 10, 2008 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions
Again
I had the impression that he wasn't comfortable with Javy. For his first K, he got ahead of Posada and then got back to even. He called time and got Javy to the mound for a word. The next pitch was a nifty quarter curve that completely fooled Posada.
A great pitch, but off the script? It was the most comfortable he looked all outing.
by Man Mountain on Mar 10, 2008 10:00 PM EDT up reply actions
C. Trent...
You guys see Homer's strikeout of Posada? Did that look like a screwball to anyone else? It seemed to start at the outside of the plate against the left-handed hitting Posada and then tail down and away. Posada had no shot. He just waved at it. A heck of a pitch. I guess it was a change, but it looked weird to me....He said it was a change he got Posada on the first time and there's just some times when it'll have late motion depending on how it comes out of his hand.
That wasn't the pitch I was referring to
The pitch Homer audibled accounted (I believe) for his second K. It was like an abbreviated 12-6. It was up in the zone, but it started way high and dropped into the zone. A cool pitch that I didn't see coming.
He tried to throw it later to Jeter, but Drek sat on it and drove it to right field.

Looks like MM was on to something
Mountain's assessment: Threw some good curves and changes.
Homer: "The good things were: I got ahead of a lot of hitters, the changeup and curveball were pretty good"
Mountain's assessment: It looked like Homer was out there with a script, like he was working on something.
Homer: "the cutter I've been working was a bad thing."
Mountain's assessment: It looked like Homer was rushing things.
Homer: "The bad, the cutter, I think I rushed things a bit."
thanks

It comes from the idea of "suited to measure" and appears frequently in Old English as "mete." That form has survived in modern English in the verb "mete" (as in "meted out").

Huh?
Jinkies, a mystery!
"So after the Nationals' 4-3 loss to the Detroit Tigers, the morbid parade to Acta's office began. In all, the club reassigned 17 players to minor league camp and unconditionally released one, veteran catcher Chad Moeller."
I did a Yahoo search for "Chad Moeller" and it came back with hits for "Washington Nationals," but it also said he was on the Yankees. His Wikipedia page said he was on the Yankees. One of his player pages said he was on the Yankees... but his picture had him in a Nationals hat.
Very odd.
by Brendanukkah on Mar 11, 2008 5:44 PM EDT up reply actions
I did a Google search
Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - The New York Yankees have signed journeyman catcher Chad Moeller to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, the team announced Monday.Moeller, 33, was released by the Washington Nationals Sunday.
I was also reading C. Trent's PBP last night, and he mentioned that Moeller (who he calls NGITW - "Nicest Guy In The World") was there. He said Griffey took a detour from right field to greet Moeller, who was working as a bullpen catcher. Trent had to look up the jersey number on the press sheet to see who it was, and was surprised to see it was Moeller.
(He's wearing 65 - the number Phil Hughes wore last year.)
