The next two weeks are the hardest

The two weeks that begin tomorrow and run until pitchers and catchers report are by far the toughest of the offseason for me (and I am sure for many of you). I am desparate for anything baseball (I just procrastinated for 2 hours watching top play archives on reds.com). Thankfully, for the last three years, I have been able to turn to this blog. So really, I just wanted to express my gratitude. This is truly a fantastic community, something that seems to be exceedingly rare on the internets, and I feel kind of ashamed for regressing back into lurker status for the last six months or so.

Here is to a great 2008 season with you all (and hopefully, some success for the Reds)!

Football season is over, spring training hasn't started, the weather is usually the worst of the year.

Sometimes, I can understand why Hunter S. Thompson killed himself when football season was over. (He left a suicide note entitled "Football Season Is Over," that complained about there being "No more games.")

post-Super Bowl doldrums

here is the USA Today Ad Meter, which grades how much viewers liked each Super Bowl ad. Coming in at No. 1 is the Clydesdale commericial (OK, but not great), and last is the Doritos "Message from your heart" ad (horrendous). Here are the lyrics to the song by Kina Grannis, who no doubt will have a budding career in music after being featured in a Super Bowl commercial.

Yes, go on. Oh, you were finished? Well allow me to retort. That song sucks.

The worst ads far and away were the salesgenie commercials that were intended to be bad. Did they have to go the route of racial stereotyping to get that point across? whatevs.

My favorite was the dog slurping water. I'm not sure what's not to like about it. It didn't get any kind of pro-gatorade message across, but WHAT'S NOT FUNNY ABOUT A BIG DOG DRINKING WATER?! It was fantastic. I don't care if it was an ad for the Price is Right, it was brilliant.

I liked the eTrade ad with the baby and the clown

I'm assuming the reason salesgenie.com got away with their ads is that their CEO is Indian. I know this doesn't explain the Panda ad. How either got past the FOX people while the GoDaddy 'beaver' ad was rejected is beyond me.

I liked the dog and horse one

And also the Chester Pitts one.

I usually prefer funnier ads rather than heartwarming ones, but the last couple of years, the Super Bowl ads have been way over the top. They're trying too hard.

My favorites of all time are probably the horses playing football. The one where the farmers are watching, and one asks the other, "Do they always do that?" "No. Usually they go for two."

And the one where they're waiting for an instant replay decision. "That referee is a jackass." "No, I believe he's a zebra." (It really is a zebra, with his head in the replay machine.)

super ads

I always get a little shocked when I look up reactions to Super Bowl ads and see the prevailing opinion differ so greatly from my own. The biggest one I remember is from a couple years ago where the referee can endure verbal abuse from a coach because he's been getting it from his harried wife. Everyone at the party I was at groaned sadly. It was likely watching every episode of Yes, Dear/According to Jim/King of Queens/Still Standing/Fat-Guy-Hot-Wife-Who-Hate-Each-Other rolled into 30 seconds. And then it turned out that ad was really popular. At least the Charlie Chan Pandas don't seem to be getting praise.
