Spring Training Game Thread: Game 1 vs. Phillies

TIME: 1:05 @ Bright House Field, Clearwater, FL

REDS PROBABLE:
          PHILLIES PROBABLE:
Jeremy Affeld                  Jamie Moyer

This is where it all kicks off today.  Fay is whining about it being a "bone-chilling 56 degrees here with whipping winds" but as I sit in 21 degree, snowy weather, I don't feel sorry for him.

Here is the Reds lineup today.  Warning, it is not for the faint of heart:
Ryan Freel CF
Norris Hopper LF
Brandon Phillips 2B
Edwin Encarnacion 3B
Joey Votto 1B
Jay Bruce RF
Jeff Keppinger SS
Paul Bako C
Andy Green DH

We get our first peek at Jeremy Affeldt in a Reds uniform.  Hopefully they can start the spring out on a strong note.

And yes, Virginia, this game is being broadcast on 700WLW.

It's all three
they are pairing up as the game goes on.  First 3 innings - Marty & Cowboy; Second 3 innings - tHom & Cowboy; Last 3 innings - Marty & tHom.

If Fay's cold, then he should be rooting for the Reds to move to Arizona. The high in Goodyear today will be 84, according to weather.com. Better weather and a free training facility is why they'll wind up going out there.

I think he was saying..
..that his arm was surprisingly strong and accurate for being so early in ST.

But to be honest, I thought he was talking about someone else (Gil?) when I heard what I thought I heard.

by Fat Vegas Alan on Feb 27, 2008 1:44 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

you're probably right
I only heard the end of the statement, but I just remembered hearing Hopper's name.  He had to be talking about someone else.  Hopper's arm is about the weakest I've seen in the outfield.

Gil has a great arm
Or did, before the TJ surgery.  Dunno how it is now.

Remember last year?  He nailed a runner at the plate from CF, ending the game.

Only Marty called him "Denorfia."

Marty & Jeff
already heaping the praise on Keppinger.

I'm a Keppinger fan, and I hope he gets 150 starts this year (split between SS and 1B), but well, Marty & Jeff can be a little overzealous on the subject.

EdE
Marty thinks EdE is the single most important player on the offense.  I tend to agree.  The Reds need some success against LHP this year.

but did you hear his tone of voice when EdE struck out.  Sounds like he's just dying to hate on him.
suggestions, anyone?

by BobbyO on Feb 27, 2008 1:24 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah
I didn't want to put too much into it, especially since I already picked on them for praising Keppinger.

It just occurred to me that Marty may use his statement about EdE as a reason to ride him hard if he struggles.  Hopefully EdE makes sure it's not an issue.

by Slyde on Feb 27, 2008 1:32 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He also said...
...something like "if Edwin blah blah blah the Reds could be very successful." (Italics mine.)

I don't think the Reds are going to need to score a bunch more runs in order to be very successful compared to last season.

Maybe he was just speaking of the offense. Maybe it was just Marty yapping away.  But I think "very successful" depends more on Belisle, Bailey and whatever old guy is in the rotation.

by Fat Vegas Alan on Feb 27, 2008 1:49 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I agree, sort of
I think they do need to score more runs than they did last year to be successful.  If they can't get over 800 runs, they'll have a hard time getting close to .500.  I'd put the need at about 820 runs, and that would still require a very big improvement from the pitching staff.

How different does this sound?
I don't know how good of a manager Trey Hillman will be, and I doubt KC has as much talent as the Reds (though I admittedly have not looked at their roster), but juxtapose this statement to our Dusty:
"OBP," he said. "It's a no-brainer. OBP, then drive them in. On-base percentage before average. Take your walks because you are aggressively disciplined in the strike zone. But take your walks.

"If they're going to pitch around you, and try to get you to bite, be disciplined enough to take your walk."

Obviously there is a lot more to being a manager, but I find it interesting that two men in the same position can have such differing views on the subject of OBP.  It'll be interesting to see how the two strategies play out over the season.

Trey Hillman
If sabermetrics can make a sow's ear into a silk purse, the Royals will kick butt.

Hillman was a dark horse to take Torre's place, and I was kind of hoping they'd pick him.  Though his stathead ways might not sit well in NY.  Torre's strength was coddling all the big egos in the clubhouse, and dealing with the media.  It's a big part of the job in NY.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Feb 27, 2008 5:17 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

sabermetrics won't do shit
encouraging an offensive philosophy that maximizes the opportunities to score runs might help, however.

With Manny Acta's Nats playing better than expected last season, if Hillman can get the Royals to be a little competitive in the AL Central this season, baseball might be hearing the wind at the door.

One of them..
is a curative to clogged bases; kind of a baseball laxative. (Rally killer, double play)

The other is a constipation problem, like eating too much fiber in your diet. (You walk too much!!!)

Obviously then, Dusty is worried about the every day problem of clogged bases, with too much OBP in his diet.

Too much OBP can lead to clogged bases. So treat early and often with Rally Killer, the anti-constipation baseball curative.

Let's keep those bases clean!!!

.."top 2 or 3" in terms of strikeout presence, not simply quantifiable strikeouts.

by Fat Vegas Alan on Feb 27, 2008 3:33 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The Reds would strike out more...
..except for the fact that they strike out so often that they never have a chance to have big strikeout innings.

by Fat Vegas Alan on Feb 27, 2008 3:39 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Why Marty can't read...
or be bothered to read statistics, or research the game, or, or, or....

The mind boggles at what he could do with his time and paycheck. But hey, he's a "Hall of Famer" so he's got his cred.

by The Crushinator on Feb 28, 2008 7:09 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yeah,
but when looking at a question of "how many" of a specific, countable event, it's best not to get too bogged down in the numbers. After all, when counting, the numbers don't tell the story. Like the guy who counted the strikeouts - was he maybe gritty guy even though blind and deaf, worked super hard at guessing which at bats were strikeouts? Or just an counting expert who was really watching the Reds cheerleaders the whole time and missed and extra 300 Adam Dunn strikeouts?
Everybody's a jerk. You. Me. This jerk.

by andromache on Feb 27, 2008 3:37 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yeah,
But what about strikeouts while not at bat?  Dunn is so good at striking out that he can strike out even while he is not at bat, according to Michael.
At least it wasn't Grady Little.

by Paul Householder on Feb 27, 2008 3:49 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Well
He wasn't talking about Dunn, and tHom actually brought up the fact that Dunn improved on strikeouts last year.

And I wasn't trying to bash Marty as much as point out that the Reds really didn't strike out an inordinate amount of times last year.  I hadn't realized that they had dropped so low in the rankings.  I guess that's what giving nearly 700 PAs to Hatteberg and Keppinger will do for you.

Why, Dusty, is this important?
Dusty also said he's trying to flip-flop Hopper and Freel to see how they work best in the lineup together:

"I want to see where I think they're best. If I want to hit-and-run, which one can handle the bat better, Hopper or Freel. I have some thoughts. If I want to double steal, which one is better on the front and which one's better on backside. If I have to bunt, are they even or is one better than the other. Which one is a smarter hitter, which one can afford to hit while the other one takes, which one doesn't mind hitting with two strikes. I have a pretty good idea, but I''e got to see."

Here is the Gameday for today's game: http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/gameday/y2007/gd.html?2008_02_28_minmlb_cinmlb_1&brand=mlb (NOTE: it only updates once an inning during the spring).

They are in the bottom of the 2nd according to GD, but I bet they are further along than that.  Those that have MLB Gameday Audio can listen to the Twins announcers here.
