Is there anybody down in Florida right now besides Fay?
Ive been checking Fay's Red insider every day for info on whats going down at spring training, but the majority of his articles seem to be puff pieces about Baker or whoever. There was a nice one a bit earlier about Coffey tossing meatballs and Volquez and Cuteo working well in BP, but is that all you can really glean from spending a week watching baseball? I was wondering if there were any other bloggers or websites that recapped the day to day down at the camp and had any real insight on whats happening with the team. Id love to hear how Andy Phillips is hitting or whats going on with all those new catchers or how Jay Bruce is hitting. There was one interview that Fay did with Valentin in which he pretty much said to throw Volquez in the bullpen, but he had already completed his mandatory daily paragraph and didn't feel the need to dig any deeper with this. Anyone who can put up some links to some real reporting would be a big help.

I've got a digital camera...
It's in almost new condition, but it's several years old, and the technology is no longer state of the art. Which is why I replaced it.
It's a Sony Mavica. Yes, it was a $800 dollar camera when new. Because it uses mini-CDs, it's large for a digital camera. And it's not ideal for sports photography, because it takes longer to write to CD than to flash memory. You aren't going to shoot 50 images a second with this camera. (Though it does do video.)
It takes nice enough photos. 3.3 megapixels was huge when I bought it. It's not much by today's standards, but it's enough for very sharp 8x10s. And you never have to worry about running out of space. The media (3" CDs) can be purchased cheaply at any office supply store. (The camera will chide you for not using Sony disks, but they work just fine.)
Anyway, if you (or anyone else) is interested in a free camera, drop me an e-mail. I'll pay postage, just to keep it out of a landfill.
(But no, I am not shipping to Nigeria.)

I'm toying with the idea
Perhaps in the future RR readers could pony up a small donation to send someone like Slyde or Menace or boobs or Geki down there for a few days. I know I'd be happy to throw 25 bones their way for the access.
In fact, when I win the Death Pool, I'll donate all the money to such a fund.

P.S. Big ups to all the crazies on Rock of Love II. There's no one as genuinely cool as Jes left (cuz Bret kicked those girls out already), but there's plenty of skankitude and crazy ("Technically I'm still married because the annulment hasn't gone through") to make for great watching.

Fay actually has some tasty crumbs today.
And..
"You hear that a lot around the Ed Smith Stadium complex. I watched Edinson Volquez, Johnny Cueto and Josh Roenicke throw live batting practice and didn't see one solidly hit ball. Roenicke has the best arm in camp. Volquez is a notch behind. One scout told that Cueto has a chance to be best of them all. "He's got a great arm and he throws strikes."
I'm having trouble believing that Roenicke has the best arm in camp but I guess I'm not down there using my ears.

From Hal...
His arm was too good, though. At UCLA, he played outfield for eight innings and if the game was close he would be the closer.
"It was kind of a hassle to walk in from center field to close," Roenicke said. "Sometimes I would jump the fence into the bullpen after the eighth inning, change my cleats and warm up fast."
Reports are that Roenicke is the hardest thrower in camp, "Touching the gun at 97 and 98 miles an hour," said general manager Wayne Krivsky.
He began last season at Class A Sarasota and was 2-1 with a 3.25 earned run average and 16 saves in 27 appearances. He was promoted to Class AA Chattanooga and was 1-1 with a 0.95 ERA and eight saves in 19 appearances.
"But he had appendicitis, then tried to come back too quickly and we had to shut him down after only 19 innings at Chattanooga," said Krivsky. "He is 26, but he is younger experience-wise -- only 70 innings and 67 professional games."
This is Roenicke's first major-league camp and he made a quick impression on Baker.
"I'm old school," said Baker. "Used to be that players came to the manager's office and introduced themselves. I've only had a couple of them do it here so far and Roenicke was one of them. Impressive."
Roenicke smiled and admitted he did that on the advice of his dad.
"My dad and uncle were from the era and told me how to act, plus my dad knows him," he said. "Wish I could have gone duck-hunting with them, but I was busy that day."
So he's either 25 or 26. But he's a young 25 or 26. Except that he knows at least one good Baseball Guy mind trick.
Veteran. Presence. Baby.

About Hopper
by The Crushinator on Feb 22, 2008 3:13 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
The problem with Hopper
There are two big problems with Hopper as an everyday starter. First, he has no power. And I don't mean just an inability to hit home runs. In his minor league career he has averaged 16 doubles per 162 games. And it's not like he's a speedster pulling down triples instead, he's only average 5 of those a season.
The bigger problem is that all of his offensive value is tied to batting average. Batting averages are terrible predictors and fluctuate wildly from season to season. Tony Gwynn hit .370 one year and then .313 the next and then .336 followed by .309. Ichiro over the last 4 years has gone .372, .303, .322, .351. And I think it's safe to say that Hopper is in neither player's class as a hitter.
If I thought that Hopper could come out and hit .330 next season and put up a .370+ OBP, I'd be fine with him getting a lot of playing time, but I just don't see it happening. If you allow me to quote myself from elsewhere on the site: Last season Hopper had 39 infield hits. If, God forbid, teams start playing him to eliminate those infield hits, it could be bad. Even if you remove just a third of those hits, leaving him with 26 (still 10 more than any other Red last season), his batting line drops to .286/.334/.345. Is he still useful then? I'd say no.

Fay did drop this nugget though
And it wouldn't be complete without a cringe-worthy Dusty quote: "That's a big turning point in you life and your career," Baker said. "I'm hoping it works out. I could see it in his eyes." Didn't hear much in the way of bat speed though.
Happy trails, Craig Wilson. We hardly knew ye.

Poor Craig
But I guess it's good news for Andy Phillips.
Oddly, I was more worried about Andy's health than Craig's. Shoulder surgery is unpredictable, but wrist problems are even worse. (Andy missed the end of the season last year when he got hit by a pitch and broke his wrist.)

Nice.
I realize that I prolly sound like a boring old codger bitching and moaning about this but I swear that customer service sucks everywhere. I've found myself going to Starbucks and ordering decaf coffees just so I can have a pleasant exchange with a clerk/cashier/service employee without having to spend at least $30.
