3rd Party Bowden Analysis
If that's what you want to call it.
If you haven't already seen it, mlbtraderumors.com </insert link here> took a stab at analyzing Jim Bowden as a GM. Part I is Leatherpants' 10.5 years with the Reds.

To say the least, it's a cursory observation. However, I do like the handy spreadsheet of Bowden trades through mid-2003. And Big Mike Glab(who is new to the site) does single out JimBo's common trade trade partners.
However, the report's draft analysis looks only at Assface's first round picks, ignoring other gems that Boy Wonder grabbed in "later" rounds (see Dunn, Adam, sidnancy, comments).
And Big Mike claims that the October 30, 1999 trade for Dante Bichette was a playoff-stretch deal. So Trader Jim was just a couple months late on that one or what?
All in all, it's a fun feature. But this one was written by either (a) some dude who did a book report on someone else's article on Jim Bowden, (b) a Reds fan who knows what we know but tried to dumb it down for a larger audience, or (c) some respectable guy I don't know who will beat me down with my own arm.
Bereavement pool update: Apparently, Edna Parker of Shelbyville, IN, may not be the oldest living human after all. A 120-year old dinosaur in Israel has applied for an identity card.

Sorry, Fat Vegas.
Second Bereavement Update [2008-2-16 12:0:18 by Brian B]: Steve Fossett has been declared legally dead on February 15, 2008, not the date he went missing (September 3, 2007). I still don't feel like he fits into the Osama Rule, but that's okay. There should be a rule against missing persons anyway.

MLB Trade Rumors
I dunno if I buy this PECOTA stuff. They predict the Reds will be third in their division, behind the Cubbies and the Brewers.
The Yanks are predicted to be first their division. Yankee fan though I am, I still think the Sox have the advantage.
MLBTR should try harder when hiring people.
They were sort of right, but not entirely,
Bichette was acquired from Colorado in October of 1999, rather than during the stretch drive.

WaPo article on Jimbo
Despite talking about his growth and maturation, Bowden can't resist taking a shot at the Reds - though I'm sure it is easier to work under Kasten than Schott:
This is a completely different job than I had in Cincinnati. Working for Stan Kasten, you are working for a proven winner who is very professional in every way he operates. The ownership is completely committed to long-term winning and doing things the right way. When you come to work and make decisions, you know that intellectually you have the freedom to hire the very best people in the game -- the very best scouts, the very best development people, the very best big league manager.... You don't ever look at it and say our situation above the GM isn't first class and isn't going to give this organization a chance to win for a long time. I never had that in Cincinnati -- ever.
It is to laugh
- Marge Schott won a championship before you got to town, Leatherpants.
- Best scouts? Is that... is that Bob Boone in charge of Nationals scouting?
- "Hire the very best people in the game." Like Paul LoDuca? Like all the Reds castoffs that you initially brought to the 'Nati, who never won anything there, or in DC?

He had an interesting winter
The new park looks sweet. Thankfully the Reds play in DC (and the NY teams) on a weekend this year.
And really, the Post should be above referencing Phil Collins in their headlines.
that is his biggest weakness

Miriam is my death pool angel.
He signed another ex-Red!
Boone, who turns 39 in April, hasn't played in the majors since 2005, when he spent time with Seattle and Minnesota. He went to spring training with the New York Mets the next year but called it quits before playing an exhibition game.
"There's something still in there," Boone said Monday. "I look at it as I've got nothing to lose."
