Bailey to White Sox: 'The deal is done'
From Hal McCoy:
http://www.daytondailynews.com/s/content/oh/story/sports/pro/reds/2008/12/07/ddn120808spredsweb.html
With baseball's annual winter meetings unfurling this week at the Bellagio in Las Vegas, rumors run rampant.
A noteworthy one involving the Cincinnati Reds is making the rounds — pitcher Homer Bailey for Chicago White Sox outfielder Jermaine Dye.
A major-league source close to the situation told The Dayton Daily News on Sunday, Dec. 7, "The deal is done and will be announced this week."
I'm not sure how I feel about it. The Reds haven't been happy with Bailey, but I'm usually not a fan of giving up on young, cheap pitching.
That said, I do think Dye will make a nice addition to the lineup for a year or two. He could hit 40 bombs in GABP next season.

Ridiculous...if its true
Mark me down at being less than impressed. Granted Jack Armstrong and Scott Scudder didnt really work out. Neither did many other highly regarded MLB pitching prospects…but dayyyyyyyyyyyuuuummm. The kid was ranked #5 overall just last season by BP.
When was the last time they were way off on ranking a top five overall prospect? Sounds like a good job for someone with a tool belt.
Well it seems like Bailey
is the classic “million-dollar arm with a 10-cent head.”
I really think Bailey will be good eventually, but he needs to grow up a bit. He might not truly blossom for another five years….perhaps follow a Schilling/Dempster type of path. Both of those guys struggled early on because of their attitudes.

agree
with the two guys above me. Bad idea with the Reds….. if the rumors from earlier were also true, its not just Bailey going, but other prospects, with an S. As in Bailey plus multiple prospects.
More than just Bailey?
Now THAT would be foolish. All Hal has right now is Bailey for Dye straight up. We’ll see.

Boooo
I don’t mind giving up Bailey, but not for Dye.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
However, Chicago fans apparently don't agree
They appear to be quite upset at the idea of losing Dye, and not happy at getting only Bailey in return.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
it's because their team went to the playoffs last year
and the Reds aren’t going there this year without a lot more help. So, this trade don’t make a lot of sense.
Why have I been blogging for so long? It's certainly not because of the paycheck. Because I could be making a lot more money as a doctor or a professional athlete.
The Reds' playoff chances
Just the fact that they’re talking about trading Bailey for Dye suggests that Jocketty thinks the Reds can contend next year. Maybe 2006 left him believing in miracles.
Or maybe it’s the owner. Remember when Krivsky was fired, and Castellini said it was because they were tired of losing and wanted to win now? Maybe he’s still thinking that way.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
i bet that is exactly what it is
Big Bob is tired of losing, so things will start to happen.
remember last off-season when the Reds were hot on Bedard? Wayner wisely didnt pull the trigger on that one, then was canned less than a month afterward. coincidence?

Chicago fans....
They’re like cattle. MOOOOOOOO!
The national economy is going to get worse before it gets better. Most owners are not dumbasses, even if some will be able to have an open checkbook. Attendance is going to decline next season as is per person spending at the ballpark. Disposable income is shrinking and unemployment rate is rising.
I think even the Yankees are worried
CNBC was talking about it last week. The Yankees, Mets, Jets, and Giants are all going to have these fancy new stadiums with higher ticket prices and tons more luxury boxes. But Wall St. collapsed in September, and there may be a lot more luxury boxes than the market will bear.
One of my coworkers has had Giants season tickets for years. They’ve been in his family for generations. But he’ll probably have to give them up. The new “seat licensing fees” mean he’d have to cough up $70,000 to keep the tickets. Which is about his salary for a year.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
that is fucking rediculous

The Cowboys
are charging as much as $150,000 for a seat license in their new stadium. That’s a seat, not a luxury box.
However, the Cowboys are exempting some seats from licensing fees. Giants fans can’t escape. No licensing fee, no season tickets.
The Giants are blaming the bad economy. They got funding from the NFL, and the NFL requires that they pay back the loan even faster than a bank would. (Assuming you could get a bank to give you a loan right now, which you can’t. As the Cowboys found out.)
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
That is horrible... I can't think of anything funny about that...

Peter Abraham...
…thinks it would be a good deal for the Reds. Or did, before the denials were issued:
Kenny Williams must get paid by the trade. He apparently is sending Jermaine Dye to the Red and Homer Bailey. Seems like a good deal for Cincy. Bailey was a can’t-miss pitching prospect who so far has missed and reportedly has a rotten attitude.

If it's just Bailey... I COULD end up liking the deal...
If they add anyone else I’ll be pissed… And Dye had better be knocking 40 out for us…

Crap.
I’ve been one of the bigger advocates of trading Homer here, but I’m not happy with the return. I just hope that this isn’t the only move that’s made. If they make this move, and expect to contend, they’ve got another thing coming. If they’re going to adopt the “win now” mentality, they can’t be done.

There has to be something else coming soon or else this makes no sense at all. Jeez, I wish the part of my brain that gives a shit about this moronically run franchise could be lobotomized.

This fucking sucks. We’re gonna need a hell of a lot more than friggin’ Jermaine Dye to win this year, which apparently is the goal. Makes a hell of a lot of sense when you’ve got one of the best young cores in baseball. Also, as has been alluded to, the economy is historically shit-tastic right now. How much of this 11.5 mill for Dye in ’09 are we paying?
Has anyone checked with johnnypronto?
I won’t believe this is true until we hear from him
Why have I been blogging for so long? It's certainly not because of the paycheck. Because I could be making a lot more money as a doctor or a professional athlete.
I like this trade.
Homer will probably become a proficient pitcher at some point. But unless a pitching epiphany occurs, he’s going to keep struggling for a while. Dye should be fine for a year or two. Give Yonder a chance to develop..then Joey can play left Field.
I really lost interest in Bailey last year. He’s in a funk and his velocity ain’t getting any better. hopefully for him a change of scenery will be helpful, but he’ll still most likely be in AAA (at best) next year for ChiSox.
Dye:
Games 154
ABs 590
2Bs 41
HRs 34
RBIs 96
SO 104
BA .292
OBP .344
SLG .544
OPS 126
Better stats than Ede or BP or Votto….he’s not Adam Dunn but may be an interesting addition along with possibly an accomplished SS and a CF or a Catcher. We’ve got a good pitching staff. A decent bench, looks like the Bullpen will be competitive.IFWalt fills out the roster with a couple more strong players the Reds can compete. Dye by himself is not going to carry the team. But then the chances that Bailey will be at the MLB level this year are 50/50 at best.
The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.
Sir Winston Churchill
His velocity DID get better
In the playoff game he brought the magic back. This is gonna be bad for the Reds IMHO.
This is a play for right now which I like, but not at this cost. Bailey is just too damned talented to give up on this early.
"Aio, quantitas magna frumentorum est."
Me likey Madville
But I wholeheartedly disagree. Time will tell, of course, but I dont support trading young power arms for 35+ yr old outfielders.
Maybe the Reds brass just think Homer is an ass and dont see him contributing to a winning team. Ok, i get that. Then again many younger players (BP) mature and become huge contributors.
Shit, at least the Dodgers got a relatively young Delino DeShields for Pedro, lol. Dye is fecking older than jch.
Props and Man love to you too, obc
It is a risky trade no doubt. If (and when) Homer will mature as a pitcher is the real question. He’s young, talented who has an apparent oversize sense of entitlement and no really good second pitch. He’s really done almost nothing at the MLB level to get me excited. Remember last year I was whining to have him brought up and I was fired up when they did. But he was a pretty one dimensional (FAST ball) thrower…Anyway the deal is done and I don’t see why everyone thinks Dye isn’t going to continue to be productive. He plays a lot of games every season, does reasonably well in the outfield and would have been the best offensive player (after Dunn) for the Reds in 2208.
Plus he is younger than you and jch24.
The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.
Sir Winston Churchill
they are selling low
Edinson Volquez netted the Rangers Josh Hamilton. I can’t believe that Bailey’s value is that much lower than Volquez’s value a year ago. Why do the Reds never seem to be on the good side of a lopsided trade?
Plus the deal isn’t done, Hal reported it.

It’s the curve. The problem is that no one seems able to teach that elusive third pitch, the changeup. With a decent changeup he’d be a fucking MONSTER.

That curve looks a hell of a lot better
when his fastball sits at 96 instead of 92, obviously. Can’t someone get Soto/EV/Cueto on the horn to teach that boy a changeup already? I know it sounds cliche but the entire time I played organized baseball we all tried to teach each other the tricks we knew. Why not at the major league level when it would help the team win?
"Aio, quantitas magna frumentorum est."
so Edinson Volquez was in a similar situation as Homer Bailey a year ago
I think that is a fair comparison, a struggling hard throwing pitching prospect, who may have over stayed his welcome but still had a alot of untouched talent.
Edinson Volquez netted Josh Hamilton.
Homer Bailey netted Jermaine Dye.

The Rangers thought he was
They thought he was so fucked up they sent him all the way back to single A, and gave him special rules, such as to how he was to wear his uniform, who he could talk when he was pitching, how long he had to get from the mound to the dugout at the end of an inning.

I was ok with/a little excited about this news...
But that was when I thought they were getting two years of Dye. I didn’t realize the second year was a mutual option.
Essentially we are trading the reds best pitching prospect of my lifetime for one year of a guy who should put up good numbers (in a year we still can’t compete for the playoffs) and bolt to a better team as a free agent.

im pissed about every single aspect of this trade (if indeed it happens)
but the most singular piss-me-off aspect of this trade is that Dye is an old man, and could run his jalopy off the cliff any second. there is no guarantee that next year he will post an OPS any better than his career average (which is a very pedestrian 112). so there is a more than unacceptable risk here that we could spend 12 million dollars and a top pitching prospect for something Jerry Hairston (or any other sack o’) could do for us for much much less. fucking sign Pat Burrell or something. Christ.
so am i worried about only getting one good year out of him before he bolts in free agency? not as much as…

age isnt a concern with a 2 year contract that you can opt out
I dont any projection will have much of a regression from 35 to 36 its just not a big issue with a one year deal.
I like Dye and has stated in other comments I can see him easily putting up Dunn like offensive #s with slightly better defense.
But with this being a tough market so far except for a few prime free agents Texaira, CC.
And especially tough for corner OF with below average defense. Partly due to the economy but also I believe in part because teams are getting more sophisticated in how they value defense and therefore players like Dunn, Dye and especially Burrell are being downgraded.
So right now I would put this deal on the backburner, and get aggressive with offering Furcal a 2 year deal maybe with mutual option for around 22-24 million. A SS would have a much bigger effect on the Reds team defense which by Fangraphs new page was rated 2nd worse in the league. And later in the offseason they could go back to the White Sox for Dye or combine Dye with Furcal.
if Dye breaks down
its not the sunken money that worries me. of course we could opt out after one year and it isnt a big monetary commitment. what has me worried is that if Dye regresses even a bit it becomes an awful, awful trade.
in essence, this is trading 6 years of Bailey, who is still a top pitching prospect, for one year of Dye (its one year because the mutual option is crap. the player and club never agree on exercising a mutual option because if the player has a good year, he will opt out for free agent riches. if he has a bad year, then we dont want him back anyway). and that one year of Dye is no guarantee to be any better than league average.
by Charlie Scrabbles on Dec 7, 2008 11:05 PM EST up reply actions
thats the point
statiscally there is very little difference from a player turning 35 to 36 as a player turning 29 to 30 as far as injury risk. Dye has been pretty solid since leaving Oakland and would be going to even more advantageous league and park.
I think what is evolving is the price for players in Dye’s classification is plummeting this offseason. So I could see where they are trying to include Freel in the trade in effect reducing Dyes contract to 8 million dollars and leaving flexibility to sign another FA.
Bailey is a separate issue. If they believe Bailey can get his velocity up to the 94-96 range- touching 96 sitting at 94- then of course you dont trade him. But that is a scouting issue- hopefully the Reds will make the right judgment. But the Bailey that pitched in the MLB the last 2 years just isnt worth very much- he had very similar stuff to Matt Belisle.
The Reds know
where Bailey sits at when he is allowed to throw his 4 seamer and its 93-95 and hitting 96 MPH. Still, he is on the market, even if this rumor isn’t true (yet).
if thats the case
the Reds better let him throw it.
I think the only problem with Bailey is velocity.
I think the line from the playoff game was 7k/0BB or something like that which would have stuck out from his other lines last year.
I guess the other question is if they are screwing him up and the same coaches are in the organization that are causing him problems will he ever deliver the results with the Reds.
Close
it was 8 strikeouts, 1 walk and 77 pitches thrown in 6 innings of flat out domination. I think in the end the Reds plan of 2008 for Bailey is going to benefit him because it got him to rely on his other pitches more, which is something he really needed to do.
A lot of people are shooting this down, Reds fans
I wouldn’t get too worried yet. If this does go down, I indeed feel sorry for you.
And neck size to baby eating ratio.
John Fay makes Real McCoy look silly

he didn’t write that the deal was done. He wrote that a source said the deal was done. That brings up the debate about using unnamed sources. why dont we try to get Jose Guillen from the Royals? the pay is the same as Dye, but he is guaranteed 2 years. he sucked last year though, so he certainly won’t cost us Bailey, or anything incredibly useful. hell, they’ll probably pitch in some cash to get rid of him. and we know he can mash at Great American, as it was the best time he ever had in life (OPS+ of 165 while he was here). as long as we are going crazy trying to get a RH corner outfielder, then let’s just fucking go nuts.

Your last two posts have had me rolling
Clearly, you need to post more when enraged by hypothetical trades of of exceedingly high bullshit levels
i dont care how angry/funny it makes me
i’d much rather have the Reds do exactly what should be done. instead of all this nonsense, we could be framing our World Series game threads.

At this point
I’d almost be up for going all Bill Veeck on this season and just doing random shit to keep up attendance if we’re going to be making trades like Bailey +prospects for Dye

Rec'd for truth my friend
I do love that this rumor was able to reignite everyone’s passion for the Reds and send us fleeing to RR.
are you kidding?
i probably spend at least 2 hours a day refreshing here. the only reason i didnt jump in on this before 10:30 was because i was watching my Bugs Bunny dvd. so it was much less “fleeing” and more “welp, i better check RR before i masturbate and go to bed”.
yeah, i know. im still cooler than Slyde.

Jocketty is one dumb motherfucker
in the long tradition of dumb motherfucking Reds GMs. No shit Bailey’s got some growing up to do. He’s twenty-fucking-one years old, asshole.
He better be calling bullshit on this.
I still think this deal is happening
Just because it’s all being denied doesn’t mean it isn’t going to happen. Since when are baseball GMs honest? They love to control the information coming out about their team.
The two clubs probably are still working on some final details, like informing the players, physicals, etc. So for now, they have to say no deal.
It’s not like Jocketty is just going to say “Yep, we did the trade. We were going to have the press conference, but we’ll just let Hal beat us to the punch.”
You went full retard. No one ever comes back from that. - Sgt. Osiris
i dont know
Jocko said they hadnt spoken since before Thanksgiving. yes, they love to control the information, but he gives too many details about the nature of all this to be totally bluffing. at least, thats my humble opine.

I'm not sure what to make of it
My guess is it’s not a deal yet, but they’re talking about it. Hal’s source jumped the gun, maybe. It’s not like that hasn’t happened before.
The Reds are so secretive. Even when there’s no reason to keep things secret…they keep them secret. So no, I would not expect Jocketty to confirm any rumors. But he issued a categorical denial. Said they hadn’t talked to the Sox since before Thanksgiving. He could have just said the report was incorrect.

isn’t that still 83 points higher than c-pat
you know, you bring up a good point
As much as I’m not fond of trading Bailey for Dye, the ultimate Reds move would be to revoke that deal and end up trading Homer for an even worse player than Dye.

*worse player
I shouldn’t say “an even worse player” because it makes it seem as if I think Dye is a bad player. He’s obviously a good, sometimes very good, player. It’s his contract and age that make this deal a problem.

Reds Fans
Search your feelings, you know it to be true. We all know this trade is going to happen, its the Reds. So they should just do it and get it over with. Just rip the band aid off and then we can start the annual “if everything goes right and so and so do this then we could win the wild card” talk.
cam i am
glad we didn’t work out that warner for manning trade!

Im sure you are
Plax deciding to shoot himself has really hurt my playoff run. My receivers have been killing me. Although even with Plax you still would have destroyed me.
I was real close to Fitzgerald for Cutler
Then Matt Schaub went apeshit in 10 degree weather in Lambeau. I’m riding this one out with my team of waiver wire pickups.
i was thinking about pulling the trigger on the trade
until burress got his injury…
then he shot himself and i was really glad it didn’t happen.

he shot himself in the foot?
All Mickey Mouse films are founded on the motif of leaving home in order to learn what fear is.
I did it in my other league
I know it’s been covered before, but I traded Romo (hurt at the time) for Plaxico (healthy at the time) straight up. I desperately needed WR help and have Rivers going anyway.
This is by FAR the worst fantasy trade I have ever made. Due to the waiting period and the subsequent events, Plaxico didn’t score for my team at all.

If they do acquire Dye, I hope doesn't take Griffey's old number
