Taveras deal worth 6.25 million over two years
According to the Denver Post:
Former Rockies centerfielder Willy Taveras not only landed on his feet with the Reds but received a contract that shows their faith in him.According to information obtained by The Denver Post, Taveras received $6.25 million on his two-year deal. He will make $2.25 million this season and $4 million in 2010. He can make an additional $250,000 this season if he reaches 600 plate appearances.
Jeez. That's more than Corey Patterson...and for two years.
On the bright side, Taveras will donate 1% of his salary to the Reds community fund.

eh
that isnt awfully expensive. he should never have gotten that 2nd year guaranteed, but if he performs the way his career norms say he should, he should be worth more than 6 mil over the 2 years.
and what took so long?

he made less than $2 million last year
Since he kinda sucked, and got a two-year deal, I thought he might get less than $2 million a year this time. Even the Post seems a little surprised at the deal.

Hopefully the Reds weren’t bidding against themselves because that second year seems pricey.

Justin put his contract worth at $2.5 million over 2 years
Obviously he wasn’t going to get something that low, and while $6.25 million isn’t a lot of money, it is money that is being inefficiently spent.

This deal does have the Casey, Larue, Freel
contract feel to it. With the economics of baseball, those type of deals kill a small-mid market franchise. I just hope we don’t up trading him for Dave Williams in ’10.

I’ll leave the expletives off of RR, but this whole deal leaves me with decidedly less confidence in Walt going forward.
I don't get the second year.
I can’t imagine Taveras was getting a ton of interest and even if he was signed to a one year deal, with his amount of service time, he’d be arb-eligible after one year if the Reds really wanted to keep him — and they wouldn’t be forced to.
Makes you wonder if they think they really locked up an asset

I don't think
it shows that they don’t have a good opinion of Stubbs. He probably won’t be ready until 2010. If he is ready, he’ll play. It’s possible the only way they could get Taveras was to offer the second year.Taveras could be an excellent 4th OF to have around in 2010 if he is still around. He would offer the best pinchrunning option in the majors. The only problem is, who would be willing to pay a pinchrunner $4mil?

with a basestealing percentage like his
four million could be worth it. if they win a pennant in 2010. it definitely seems like thats the play walt is making
Stubbs
I think this means they are being realistic about Stubbs. Stubb’s will probably need a full year at AAA with his new swing. He still needs to find his power stroke.
Taveras would be a pretty damn good to have around as a 4th outfielder. Speed/defense are must haves for the 4th guy.

Apathy
1 yr or 2 yrs, doesnt matter to me. I am glad its not a three year deal, however. He is a MLB ballplayer, which is more than can be said for CPAT. Bottom line, the reds HAD to sign an outfielder desperately. Does anyone else remember the great offseason when the Reds signed both Cecil Espy and Gary Varsho? Kinda seems like deja vu all over again (just without the second signing).
and the fact that those two combined for 155 at bats for the Reds

The Fay
posted a fairly long mailbag this afternoon.
Are the Reds seriously considering signing Wigginton and moving EE to the outfield?
And Sporting News has an article about NL trading needs.
Cincinnati: Righthander Homer Bailey, once an untouchable prospect, remains available as the Reds search for a power-hitting right fielder. They would still gladly ship Bailey, who has not developed a pitch to go with his fastball, to the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Jermaine Dye, but that possibility seems to be shrinking daily.
...Washington: After missing out on free-agent first baseman Mark Teixeira, the Nationals have money to spend on a needed big bat. General manager Jim Bowden has a long-running crush on free-agent outfielder Adam Dunn.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
And Paul Bako is a Cub
From the Tribune:
Geovany Soto’s backup: Paul Bako, a left-handed hitter, is expected to sign a one-year deal for about $500,000. The Cubs don’t want a No. 2 catcher who costs much or expects to play a lot. Bako certainly fills the bill.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

I like this one a lot:

Though I would caution the mixing of a hatred of those who flaunt Che without understanding his significance and a hatred of the values that Che stood for.
I am just now really coming to see how my understanding of Che and the Cuban Revolution has been limited and shaped by my upbringing in the US. At this point, I feel like I only know enough to know that what I have been taught about Cuba has been with the purpose to delegitimize its existence. One of my goals in the coming year is to get a more complete perspective on Cuba, Che, and the revolutionary history of the Caribbean.

i spent 10 weeks in cuba
and i went from having an ambivalent view on Fidel and Friends, to one that matches a Cuban in Miami. I had some sources from the inside, that I would rather not divulge, because I know the chances of the Cuban gov’t reading this slight is slim, but I really don’t want to get anyone in trouble.
PS Cuba thought I was dangerous because when we visited the U.S. Chief of Missions House he and and I walked and talked alone for about two minutes. The hotel we stayed at kept tabs on us, people knew things about us that they shouldn’t have, conversations I had with people were repeated back to me.

says the Reds aren’t done shopping yet.
However, the work isn’t done yet to assemble a team that will be ready for the final year of Spring Training in Sarasota, Fla. After signing free-agent center fielder Willy Taveras to be their new leadoff hitter, they are still looking to sign a right-handed power hitter that can fit between the lefty-hitting Votto and Bruce. Jocketty also wants to add an extra shortstop and some additional bench help.More moves are likely to come in January — and even February — as unsigned free agents start scrambling to secure jobs. In part because of the nation’s financial crisis, this offseason’s market was slow to take shape until the recent Winter Meetings.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
is Hairston still available?
and I think the second year for Taveras was a little high. I would have been ok with a second year at around 3 million. Is this guy really going to be that much more valuable than CoPa?

prior to coming to the Reds
Patterson was successful on 80.3% of his SB attempts. Taveras over his career has been successful in 82.4% of his attempts. I wouldn’t say there is any guarantee that Taveras will be markedly better than Patterson. FWIW, I believe the manager can be blamed for a lot of the SB mistakes the Reds made last year. I can’t remember a season where the Reds seemed to attempt steals at the most ludicrous of times like they did last year.

Need a 4 year VORP comparison
Then I’ll make an informed decision. But my hunch is there’s a big gap between Taveras and Patterson.
Looking at Win values (to include defense)
This is Taveras vs. Patterson over the last 4 seasons. The last column is Patterson from 2003-2006, when he was the same age as Taveras (data from FanGraphs):
Willy T CoPa CoPa-Same Age
2005 2.2 -0.1 2.9
2006 2.4 3.1 4.7
2007 0.6 0.5 -0.1
2008 -0.2 -1.1 3.1
Total 5.0 2.4 10.6

Hey, it could be worse. As this article points out, the Baltimore Orioles do not have a single catcher on their roster.
The Orioles do not have a catcher on their 40-man roster. As Casey Stengel pointed out, a team without a catcher is likely to have a lot of passed balls.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
i cant recall the kids name
But they have the best catching prospect in the minor leagues ready to come up to the big club.
I think they just got him (Posey?) a year or two ago...he may not be ready
but that’s fairly terrible. I would love it for the Orioles to just sign Moeller, Zaun, Fasano, and every other retread catcher they could find. Shoot, see what Ron Karkovice and Mike DiFelice are doing. I’m sure Benito Santiago would take some money. If they get really desperate, just sign up Tom Berenger.
I’m starting to really, really, enjoy the Orioles.
...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield
yeah, that's what the article said
Top prospect Matt Wieters will move into the position at some point this season, possibly by opening day. Wieters is only 22 and would benefit from having a veteran catcher around to counsel him.
But he’s only been playing for one year in pro baseball. He jumped from A to AA in 2008, and had great numbers. But counting on him this year might be a bit risky. AA to the big leagues is quite a jump.
And even if he’s great, you need more than one catcher. Maybe not three, but more than one.
