A look at the Rule 5 Draft
With just 37 players on the 40-man roster, the Reds almost certainly will select at least one player in the Rule 5 Draft next Thursday. The order stands at Washington, Seattle, San Diego, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, San Francisco, Atlanta and Cincinnati in the top eight. If no one ahead of them passes, the Reds could pick as high as sixth because the Pirates and Orioles have full 40-man rosters. That could change as teams make trades at the Winter Meetings.
Are there players worth selecting? While there appears to be no Josh Hamilton, Johan Santana nor Joakim Soria available, there are some interesting possibilities. Here’s a look at some guys the Reds might consider:
HITTERS
– James Skelton-C-Detroit.
A 14th-round pick out of HS in 2004, Skelton, 23, is just 5-11, 165. He threw out 35 percent of base stealers in high-A ball last season, where he posted a 3-23-.307 .468 .406 line while stealing 14 bases in 19 attempts. At AA, Skelton went 2-11-.294 .425 .388. He’s a LHH and is willing to take a walk. For a team in need of catching, Skelton could be worth a pick.
– Jordan Brown-1B/OF-Cleveland.
A fourth-round pick from Arizona in 2005, Brown reminds some of Sean Casey at the plate. A LHH, he’s done nothing but hit, although with little power. Brown went 7-51-.281 .337 .417 in AAA last season. He’s a capable defender at a corner OF spot. He could make a nice fourth OF, pinch-hitter type who can play 1B.
– Corey Wimberly-2B-Colorado.
If you are head over heels for Willy Taveras, and honestly who isn’t, this sixth-rounder from the 2005 draft out of Alcorn State is your man. Versatile enough to play some CF, LF and 3B, as well as 2B, Wimberly is a speedster, stealing 181 bases in 235 attempts as a minor leaguer. Wimberly (5-8, 180) offers absolutely no power. Last season in AA he posted a line of 0-26-.291 .370 .345. A switch-hitter, he walks nearly as often as he strikes out, but doesn’t do either often. Wimberly could stick as a pinch-runner type (Herb Washington anyone?) If nothing else. Do the Reds have roster space for that?
– Brad Coon-CF-Anaheim.
Interesting prospect this 27-year-old LHH out of Trevecca Nazarene U. A 15th-rounder in 2005, Coon might be coming into his own. He went 4-30-.306 .406 .380 and was 17-27 in SB last year at AAA hitter’s haven Salt Lake City. He lacks a great arm, but is quite sound defensively. He is not averse to taking a walk. The Reds need for CF help might make Coon (6-1, 175) worth a shot – a long shot, at best.
– Jesus Guzman-3B-San Francisco.
Guzman, 24, recently signed as a six-year free agent, but the Giants didn’t place him on the 40-man roster so he’s eligible for the Rule 5. Guzman put up impressive numbers last year with Oakland’s AA club, going 14-76-.364 .419 .560. Originally signed in 2000 by Seattle, Guzman (6-1, 160) is a switch-hitter who can play 2B, 3B or the OF, although he isn’t stellar at any of those positions. He could make a decent utility player in time, but don’t the Reds have enough of those already?
Others of mild interest: Ryan Royster-RF-Tampa Bay, Chad Boyd-LF-Oakland, Daniel Carte-OF-Colorado, Stephen Head-OF/1B-Cleveland, Jeremy Slayden-OF-Philadelphia, Erik Lis-OF/1B-Minnesota, Josh Alley-OF-San Diego, Bryan Byrne-1B-Arizona, Anthony Recker-C-Oakland.
PITCHERS
– Chris Nicoll-RHRP-Kansas City.
A third-rounder out of Cal-Irvine in 2005, Nicoll, 25, became a reliever last season and took to it well. A K guy, Nicoll (6-1, 190) has averaged nearly 10 strikeouts and three walks per game in his career, despite featuring a merely average fastball/slider combination. Last year in AA, Nicoll posted a 4-1 record with a 3.09 ERA and 1.17 WHIP. He whiffed 55 and walked 8 while allowing 43 hits in 43 IP.
– Eduardo Morlan-RHRP-Tampa Bay.
Included in the Matt Garza-Delmon Young deal, Morlan (23) has an intriguing arm. A third-round pick in 2004, Morlan (6-2, 210) combines a mid-90s fastball with a mid-80s slider. Last season in AA, Morlan went 4-2 with a 3.64 ERA and a 1.26 WHIP. Opponents batted .242. He allowed 44 hits in 47 IP, struck out 45 and walked 15. He has averaged 10 Ks and fewer than three walks per game in his career. Morlan is very adept at keeping the ball in the park.
– Zach Kroenke-LHRP-NY Yankees.
I’ve read next to nothing on Kroenke from anyone previewing the Rule 5, but I like him enough to consider the 2005 fifth-rounder from Nebraska worth a look. Kroenke (6-3, 210) will be 25 on opening day. He went 6-0 with a 3.09 ERA and 1.24 WHIP in AA last season. Foes batted .187. In 43 IP, he allowed 28 hits, struck out 44 and walked 26. Historically, he has struggled before repeating a level since 2006, so maybe that’s the knock.
– Sean Stidfole-RHRP-Toronto.
A 2005 14th-rounder from Penn State, Stidfole (25) went 1-3, 3.27 ERA with a 1.23 WHIP in AAA last season. In 41 IP, he allowed 31 hits, walked 19 and struck out 32. He’s not a K guy and he walks too many, but Stidfole (6-2, 175) is a groundball pitcher who could be worth a look.
– Derek Rodriguez-RHRP-Chicago White Sox.
Rodriguez (25) is another under the radar guy. At 6-1, 190, Rodriguez was a 2005 14th-rounder out of UNLV. Last year in AA, Rodriguez posted a line of 5-1, 3.38 1.13. In 42 IP, he allowed 30 hits, struck out 44, walked 18 and held opponents to a .203 BAA. In 20 IP at AAA, Rodriguez went 0-1 with a 3.19 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 44 Ks and 15 walks. Foes hit .179. A little too much of a flyball guy for GABP, Rodriguez went 1-0 with a 4.26 ERA in the AFL this season. He allowed 13 hits in 13 IP, struck out 14 and walked six.
Others of mild interest: Todd Blackford-RHRP-Chicago Cubs, Jacob Marceaux-RHRP-Florida, Donald Veal-RHSP-Chicago Cubs, Kevin Whelan-RHRP-NY Yankees, J.B.Cox-RHRP-NY Yankees, Chuck Lofgren-LHSP-Cleveland, Alan Horne-RHSP-NY Yankees, Neil Jamison-RHSP-San Diego.

i like Veal from the Cubs
he’s a lefty starter who gets a K per inning and doesnt give up home runs, and coming out of the ‘pen i think his numbers would look even better. he’s wild, but i think he could stick and be decent to good.

Thanks for the all the info Turtle
Since we’re likely to wind up with a crappy catcher to pair with Hanigan anyway, I certainly don’t mind obtaining one through the Rule V Draft, rather than doing something like signing Paul Bako or trading Homer for Gerald Laird. But is Skelton really even much of an upgrade from Mesorasco? The jump from High A to the majors seems a little steep…
by Brendanukkah on Dec 3, 2008 1:59 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
My pleasure.
Mesoraco is a better long-term prospect with more power, pure ability and projection. Skelton is a better current hitter and shows a more discerning eye at the plate. Mesoraco just completed a season at low-A ball where he went 9-42-.261 .311 .399. Not bad, but he’s still a pup and is likely to improve, possibly a great deal.
Skelton got a little time (85 AB) in AA last year and performed well. He played in Hawaii this year, too, and posted 0-11-.281 .405 .391. I think he’ll be a big leaguer but he needs more seasoning. Forcing him to spend 2009 on an MLB roster could set back his development a bit. I’ve liked him since Detroit drafted him.
The Reds might draft him and if he doesn’t pan out send him back to the Tigers. I don’t think they will select him, though, with Hanigan, Craig Tatum and Mesoraco in the system.

No offense to Tatum
but he’s still a couple of years away from being a backup catcher in the big leagues. Then again, he’s probably still better than Skelton next season. I’m not certain either would outperform Bako though.

5'9, 165?
He seems like one of those guys that randomly comes up in a Madden Draft that can no way actually be a professional athlete, but plays like one because of his ratings.
I’m for getting him just so that him and Danny Ray can be battery mates at some point. Weighing less than Sabbathia, combined.

We still have Wee Willie Wilkin, don't we?
I think he’d be an ideal guy to pair with Hanigan, barring a trade for a non-Laird Texas catcher.

This may be quibbling
but I wonder about “there appears to be no Josh Hamilton, Johan Santana nor Joakim Soria available.” Before they were taken did anyone consider Santana or Soria to be major talents? Maybe so. I disremember…

Good point.
There never are players available who appear to be can’t miss MLB stars or teams would protect them. I guess I’m saying there aren’t many players out there who make me think, “Gee, I can’t believe they left that guy unprotected.” Morlan might come close to that category.

i think in years past
more teams left their raw prospects in the low minors unprotected, for obvious reasons. guys like Soria and Santana had tons of talent, but were considered years away from the majors. it was believed that even if a team were dumb enough to draft them, there was no way they would stick. but i think nowadays teams are more cautious with guys like that, again, for obvious reasons. its a judgment call either way, but i think more teams are thinking that their 38th spot on the 40 man is better served carrying a raw prospect than a washed-up Rob Mackowiak.

Morlan and Nicoll sound intriguing. Also, over at the BTF thread a couple of relievers St. Louis didn’t protect are worth a closer look – Mark McCormick and Luis Perdomo. Both throw hard but have control problems, and like a lot of unprotected guys they haven’t had much AA and no AAA experience.

high school players and international signees from 2004 can be drafted, along with college players from 2005, unless they’re protected on the 40-man roster. There are exceptions, but that’s generally the rule.

"for two relief prospects"
i would have sent SD a few relief prospects in a heartbeat. looks like a good deal for St. Louis, no matter who the arms are. a starting shortstop is worth waaaay more than minor league relievers. good thing we dont need a shortstop or i would have been pissed at the Reds for not doing this.

If I recall
No one around here was incredibly excited about Khalil Greene when there were rumors that the Reds were targeting him.

I'm not a Greene fan
But I’m with Chuck, if you can get him for a couple of minor league relief arms why not?
Wait, what is he making?

6.5 mil, i think
its a pretty big chunk of change, especially since Gonzo is making 5.3. but his career OPS+ is 95 and he plays plus defense at SS. that is worth more than 6.5 mil, i think. of course, thats presuming he bounces back from such a dreadful year last year.

One of the relief prospects
is Mark Worrell, who is a pretty good arm. No word on the second player headed to SD.

No reason for excitement.
When the Padres send shortstops to the Cardinals, nothing much ever comes of them. For instance:
December 10, 1981: Ozzie Smith traded by the San Diego Padres with a player to be named later and Steve Mura to the St. Louis Cardinals for a player to be named later, Sixto Lezcano, and Garry Templeton. The San Diego Padres sent Al Olmsted (February 19, 1982) to the St. Louis Cardinals to complete the trade. The St. Louis Cardinals sent Luis DeLeon (February 19, 1982) to the San Diego Padres to complete the trade.

Sixto is a tough name.

Know what would be fun?
Is if one of the relievers the Cardinals deal is Kyle Mura, a pretty decent youngster out of Loyola Marymount. Kyle is Steve Mura’s son.

That'd be a blast...
why? These stats?
I’ll take your word on it, though, Turtle.

Steve Mura shows up as part of the trade
on Ozzie’s Baseball-Reference page, but not on his own page. Go figure.

fun fact about Ozzie Smith
he only put up an OPS+ over 100 four times in his career. But he generally put up a decent on base percentage, so I guess that is acceptable.

Speaking of shortstops, Rosenthal
is reporting the Giants have signed Edgar Renteria for two years and $18.5 million. Thank you Walt for not doing that.

Rule 5 Draft
Hi everyone my 1st post here, although I have read the site a time or 3. Just wanted to add one player to your selection for the rule 5. He is in fact “talent-wise” on par with a Joakim Soria if not better. He’s got a few negatives but who would be available for this if they didn’t. Anyway w/o further adue I give you “23” yr old RHRP Pedro Strop currently of the Rangers formerly of the Rockies.
The negatives, he’s a bit of a stretch to jump from AA to a stress fracture in his elbow (mid- April ’08) to the big leagues sometime in ’09. But not a huge stretch from a stuff perspective, just from a polished one. As he was formerly a no bat SS until 2006 when Colorado moved him to the mound.
The positives, he’s flat out filthy with what BA previously called “3 swing and miss pitches”. He has a mid 90’s fastball with late life, a plus slider and a nasty splitter. This is a positive that doesn’t seem like one but he’s probably gonna take some time on the DL at least early on, which as you all know means we can keep him on the DL until we “deem him ready” so to speak. Keith Law recently stated in his chat that if he were gonna take anyone in the rule 5 it would be Strop.

Was he a good SS?
Maybe he could play SS on the days he’s not pitching…
