Here, An Idea, Take Your Xanax, T Willy is Here

I tend to be one of the more not-optimistic people on here, but I think we should calm down a little bit when it comes to this Willy T. signing, I have some reasons why and some ideas of what I think we should do.

1. The Reds have the 18th highest payroll out of 30 teams, so when talking about "contending" money alone would say that is not something we could do. We can`t afford to play the power ball that contenders do, plain and simple. From years of torture, Votto and Bruce give us a chance to have homegrown power, but we are not going to land a Manny or Mark T. calibur player in free agency, and we would more than likely not make out too well by trading for that power. Adam Dunn is gone, and we are not getting him back, we can`t even afford him if we wanted him. Because of our financial past, landing a runner-up for rookie of the year player that stole 68 bases in a year is not a bad thing. Encarnacion gets enough breaks for his "upside" and "potential" on this site, so Willy with a change of scenery should not be such a dreaded pick-up.

2. Speed. This team is fast, this team is scary fast. Willy T, Dickerson, B-Phil, Hopper, and Possibly Hairston. There is a good lead-off hitter there somewhere, though now it is probably less likely Hairston will stay. Thats enough speed to keep the defense on its toes, and make up for defensive plays Ede decides to screw up. Less double plays, more ground covered in the field defensively. These guys can make 1st base scoring position more often.

3. He is not the big pick up. We know We are going to pick up another outfielder, and have younger guys competing in camp. I think we need to give Jocketty a chance, sure taking a job for the Reds was a bad move, but lets at least give him a season before we brand him as an idiot. We are shaping up to have a good pitching staff this year, and pitching wins rings. I don`t think we need to worry about picking up Juan Pierre, better known as "Slappy McPop-up". I don`t know, there are a lot of options, we all know there will be some sort of power in the corner going into camp......

4. He is better than Freel. Diving on your face every play and making a spectacular play when you are fast means you just don`t know how to judge a fly ball. Free was fast but not as fast or young or sober as Willy.

5. Not really a reason but an idea. Why not let Bonds and Sosa come to camp? Chances are they get cut, but if not you have your cheap bat for a year, and more than likely you draw press and crowds from the shear signing. I detest these guys as much as the next guy, but sign Clemens while your at it for cheap. They need money and they want their decency, then we get a higher revenue, its possible they could still play and be productive, at least platooning. If not, cut them, you wont lose much money, nobody else wants them. They used the drugs and used the game so now lets use them and dispose of them after a year. Connie Mack brought Cobb and Tris Speaker back for a year after their alleged game fix, then they split ways the next year and the A`s went to the World Series.

6. Now another not reason but question....player managers.....why not?

4. He is better than Freel.

If you rock back and forth on the toilet long enough, you can surely squeeze this one out.

I didnt know

People had such a problem with Rick Moranis…..convince me Freel is good, attempt to.

by Reynard on Dec 30, 2008 2:10 PM EST up reply actions

Does it matter?

Nobody is saying that Freel is good, especially when he’s not on the team. Taveras wasn’t brought in to replace Freel.

I wish you were a person

Not like an internet phantom person, but a real physical person in my everyday life. Since that isnt true, I just go ahead and put you in the same category as people who order young boys to bang from Southeast Asia online, buy various penis stretchers anonomously on ebay, and jerk off to whatever pornstar has the most hits on Google for said week.

I imagine a person who has had sex with less than four people in his life, who if could grow a manly beard would, but is stuck with a neck beard and mustache instead. Not the fattest person, but definately has man tits, I guess when I think of you, whoever you are, I think of you as a 9th rate Schwab, waiting to be “stumped” by any bypassing guy who delivers packages from door to door.

You are not my ass, if you were you would be hairy and at least poof out something entertaining every now and then, or at least original.

Your computer is stressed out from all of the pointless pictures you found on the internet you have saved to it, and when you die you will have accomplished not one damn thing, and more than likely nobody will really care…….

And BK, Ryan Freel just got traded, he was an outfielder and we were short on outfielders, so yes he is replacing Ryan Freel or anyone who was in the outfield and isnt anymore.

He may be replacing him on the roster but not in the lineup

Nobody said that Freel would ever start over Hopper or Dickerson in any outfield spot.

By your ass-backwards logic

Then Taveras is replacing Adam Dunn, which makes this a bad signing.

Or maybe your Reynard’s Ass and your just trying to draw attention to yourself

I think sometime in 2007 we had a guy who was somewhat of a regular and in the game post he created an alter ego, they started fighting, and JD banned them both.

Are you serious right now?

BK what are you even trying to argue, more importantly why are you trying to argue, nobody said he wouldnt either before he got traded….oh christ I should have called that before I posted that you would squeeze in a Dunn comment

by Reynard on Dec 30, 2008 2:36 PM EST reply actions

Get over it he is gone

When we hire the RH power we are looking for that is replacing Dunn, but Freel was there for speed and “defense” so I would think Willy replaced him as the same type of player, only a better version

by Reynard on Dec 30, 2008 2:37 PM EST up reply actions

he's right bk

why are you trying to argue with him?

also, what is he saying? what are you arguing about?

I dont really even know what this argument is

I dont think Jocketty said “Welp he is better than Freel” when he signed Taveras, I never said that was the “reason” why we signed him, Im saying its improvement

The thing that bothers me about posts like this

that ALWAYS come out whenever a move is made that the majority of the site doesn’t like, is that the Reds still haven’t won. Every off-season we have someone tell us that we need to get over ourselves and stop whining about a specific deal. And every year we watch the Reds suck out loud. I think we’ve earned the right by sticking with this team for 8 losing seasons to bitch about it when we don’t think a move is a good one. This team is no better than the team we saw last year, and they just signed a replacement level player to a two year contract. I suppose we should be ecstatic because now they are faster?

We’’re in process of trying to a guy with a trade record of working with pitches

Taveras is a lousy ballplayer

His one tool is speed. And I do like fast baserunners and such, but the biggest problem with Taveras is almost all his value is in his legs. If those legs aren’t at 100 percent, he isn’t getting on base. A hamstring tweak here or a slightly sore knee there affects his speed, and then he’s completely worthless.

As I’ve said before, if Taveras bats 8 or 9, he’s not miserable. In the leadoff spot, he’s miserable.

My biggest worry is who the Reds get for left field. I think it’s pretty clear that, for whatever reason, Dusty isn’t sold on Dickerson, so he’s a 4th outfielder at best. I’d be pretty pissed if Jocketty decides to just bring back Hairston for LF. That would be a horrible joke. Really, almost any option you can name (Burrell, Dunn, Dye, Baldelli, Nady, Swisher, Bonds, et al) would be better than bringing Hairston back.

I still think the Reds should throw a boatload of cash at Manny on a 1 or 2 year deal. If you’re going to overpay, overpay for a true stud.

You went full retard. No one ever comes back from that. - Sgt. Osiris

I do agree with that

But simply saying “too expensive” and accepting the fact that we dont spend money, or make large pushes to be a good team is the norm on this site.

The problem is the owner that wont spend a lot of money in a sport without a salary cap, the fans that wont go to games because they suck, and the people that justify and accept the cheapness of the organization……woooo go Reds!
