Vernon Wells available?????
Jon Heyman has heard that the Blue Jays "have fielded a few trade inquiries" about Vernon Wells, though they are not shopping him. Wells has six years and over $100MM remaining on his contract.
Because of the Jays' financial constraints, they could consider trading Wells or closer B.J. Ryan for the right package. Trading the center fielder would likely take a lot of creativity on the part of Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi given the amount the club owes Wells. [Note by MLBTraderumors.com ]
Check out this contract for Wells, per Cot's contracts
7 years/$126M (2008-14)
- signed extension with Toronto 12/06
- $25.5M signing bonus (paid in 3 $8.5M installments, March 1 2008-10)
08:$0.5M, 09:$1.5M, 10:$12.5M, 11:$23M, 12:$21M, 13:$21M, 14:$21M
That is probably the most back-loaded contract I have ever seen. Wells has a career 0.283/.332/.480 with a 0.300/.343/.496 last year. He is also a 3xGG CF and 2xAS. He will be 30 years old this year, so that's 36 at the end of this contract. The Jays would have to pick up a whole lot of that contract for that to be feasible for us, but he fits the bill of a RH power bat.
With Drew Stubbs on his way up to take over CF hopefully the end of next year, I prefer to go with a cheaper RF power bat to fit our need.
My best case scenarios are as follows
1. Dye
2. Burrell - 1 or 2 year deal
3. Trade everyone for The Great Pujols
Something tells me I may be very disappointed our RH power next year.

No way I take on that contract
without Toronto paying a significant part of it. To get the Jays to do that would require giving up top level prospects. I like the thought of Wells in CF the next couple of years, but with a deal as backloaded as that one, I can’t imagine the Reds acquiring him.

no way
I dont think any team would trade for that contract. Wells has trouble staying healthy now, and that isnt going to improve with age

I think the appropriate term for that contract is timebomb

To put it in perspective,
Wells’ contract is a mere $6 million less than Alfonso Soriano’s through the lives of both deals.

Cripes
He’s gonna be vying with Zito for most overpaid ballplayer in 2011.

Wow,
I always thought Riccardi was a terrible GM, now I know he is. That is a ridiculous contract.

Riccardi
goes by the Mayan calendar and therefore this contract was a steal in the order of the Tampa Bay/Longoria Deal.

options, as I see it
1) Sign Rocco AND Hairston (same agent)

I'd do that AND sign Burrell on a 1-2 yr deal at $9.5M/year
but unless this is matched with a trade for a 3Bman like Beltre, this is simply marking time.
