Milb.com rates Alonso at 34

Milb.com is rating the top 50 prospects in baseball, and the first and possibly only Red to appear on the list is young Yonder Alonso at number thirty four and heres what they had to say.

"Statistically speaking: After getting in six games with Sarasota in the Florida State League, Alonso showed just what made him the No. 7 overall pick in the Draft in Hawaii. He finished ninth in average (.308), sixth in OBP (.419) and fifth in SLG (.510). That made his OPS of .929 the fourth-best in the winter circuit.

Scouting report: A pro at the plate, Alonso should be a run producer with good plate discipline and power. Showed power mostly to the middle and opposite field in college, but will learn to turn on pitches. He doesn't run well, but he doesn't clog the bases and he's just fine at first base defensively.

Upside potential: A middle-of-the-order run producer who hits for average and power.

They said it: "He swung the bat the way everyone that had seen and scouted him thought he would. He hit some home runs and drove in some big runs." -- Reds Minor League Director Terry Reynolds

He said it: "I play with a lot of hunger. I consider myself a line-drive hitter. I can drive the ball, but I'm more of a gap-to-gap guy. I'm a very passionate guy. I take baseball very seriously. I'm a winner."- milb.com

From what I read of the other prospects, milb.com apparently thinks we are going to have fifty new All-Stars joining the MLB ranks in the next couple years... They are pretty heavy handed with their praise, yet there is no mention of the Hall of Fame or the All Universe team for Alonso and it has me pretty steamed. From what I have been reading on Doug's website over at redsminorleagues.com the rating system seems to be a bit flawed but its still nice to see Alonso get some national press.

All right I did a fanpost, yeeah

To take it a little further on the selection process

There is a panel of people that are polled (how many I can’t be sure, but last year it was more than 10 people) for their top 30 prospects. From there they are assigned points based on the rankings and ranked 1-50. One person having an inflated idea of a single guy can sway him into a top 50 ranking even if everyone else universally agrees that the player is in the 70’s, while if everyone universally agrees that Player Y is the #31 prospect, he doesn’t get a single vote for the top 50 by this method.

Yonder may be here sooner than later:

so the White Sox look to be on the move again

i dont really care much either way about these two teams or the players involved, but i wonder how this could affect a Reds deal for Dye.

if this goes down, maybe the Sox are done dealing? sending off Swisher and Vasquez might make them flinch at dealing Dye as well. or perhaps this means the Sox are in full-sell mode, and they would be more motivated to move Dye?

i dont think ive gotten anywhere with this. hopefully it means Dye is off the table, but who knows when it comes to Kenny Williams. the guy would trade his right fielder for a circus elephant.

Sounds like the Sox are selling

They were fortunate last year (like ‘05) to get that many innings out of their top 4 starters, They likely won’t see as many from Danks and Floyd in ‘09, and it’s tough to count on Contreras for 30 starts. Clayton Richard is still an unknown. Vazquez has his faults but you can pretty much pencil him in for 200+ innings.

With all those lefties they may be even more keen to acquire a young RHP ….

Hold onto Homer

Jocketty saw Bailey pitch last year in the minor league playoffs and commented he was as good a young pitcher as he’s seen. Either its a total smokescreen or he aint going no where. Hope that helped, thats what i do!

I don't think he was bluffing

I saw that game. Bailey absolutely dominated and he did so on a knee that was what kept him from getting the ball to the majors in September. A scout from another team also saw that game and said that Bailey was very, very good in that game as well, hitting 96 into the 6th inning to go with a very nasty slider. While I am no scout, I did spend quite a long time pitching and feel I know pitchers better than hitters and the slider Bailey was throwing that night to me was a plus pitch, right on line with the slider that Harang throws when its on its game.

Doug, please write a letter to Walter

You know your stuff. I don’t want to give up on Bailey’s potential for a man named Gerald.
