Rumor-mill: Jeremy Hermida

According to Mike Berardino, the Reds might be a good match in a trade for Jeremy Hermida.  Would he be a good match for the Reds?

His last 3 seasons:

YearPA HR RBI SB AVG OBP SLG wOBA RAR FRAR TtlVal
2006 348 5 28 4 .251 .332 .368 .310 4.4 5.0 6.7
2007 484
18
63
3 .296 .369 .501 .372 30.7 5.4 32.0
2008 559
17
61 6 .249 .323 .406 .321 11.3 0.0 6.8

Those numbers don't look that great, but then again, he's only 25 next year and he put those numbers up in Florida.  That's why his projections look a lot better than you might expect:

SystemAVG OBP SLGwOBA
Bill James
.275 .363 .459 .362
Marcel .271 .348 .440 .343

I think this is definitely somebody worth pursuing.  He's a pretty good defender, though either he or Bruce would need to move out of RF.  He's still young.  And if he could possibly be acquired for Owings or Bailey like Berardino suggests, I'd be all for it.  This isn't acquiring a 35-year old poor defender who might decline.  This is a young player with some strong upside.  This is the kind of player the Reds should be acquiring.

UPDATE: I forgot that he hits left-handed, but that doesn't change my thinking.  I don't believe the Reds have to focus solely on RHB.  I think the need good hitters, regardless of what side of the plate they stand on.  I think Hermida will be a good hitter next year and in the future.

Barardino has an update:

"One of those two trade proposals the Marlins submitted Tuesday was rejected early Wednesday morning by the defending American League champion Rays.

Jeremy Hermida for two top pitching prospects, likely from a group including RHPs Jeff Niemann, Wade Davis, Jeremy Hellickson and Mitch Talbot.

The chances of the deal being revisited and accepted are “slim and none,” according to a baseball person who had been briefed on the talks.

The Reds make sense for Hermida with their great need for outfielders, but as of Wednesday morning they had yet to inquire about him.

The other trade proposal involved Matt Treanor, who is likely to be non-tendered by Friday’s midnight deadline. It’s unknown which team fielded the proposal.

The Reds had shown some interest in Treanor before acquiring Ramon Hernandez from the Orioles on Tuesday."

I get the feeling that "right-handed bat"

has obtained a mythic status at this point for the Reds and their fans. I’d be very surprised if they pursue Hermida

yeah

I was more excited by the idea when I was thinking he was right-handed. Since then, I find it less likely, though I’d still do it.

Willy Taveras is happening

Oh, and you’re right that this is exactly the type of move a team like the Reds should make. Go grab a young player with huge potential coming off a down year for a team looking to dump players. The fact that he doesn’t fit the mold of a “right-handed bat” perfectly shouldn’t matter.

With teams like the Yankees, Red Sox, Angels, Cubs, etc throwing insane money around, smaller teams can’t make the perfect the enemy of the good.

But, to reiterate, Willy Taveras is happening

comparing Hermida

here’s a comparison of career numbers:

Hermida – .through his age 24 season: 267/.342/.436; wOBA .339; BB% 9.5; K% 25.4; LD% 19.5; UZR -4.5 RF
??? – through his age 25 season: .266/.346/.455; wOBA .349; BB% 9.0; K% 20.1; LD% 19.2; UZR -11.5 3B

Hermida Ks a bit more and SLGs a tad less, but ??? plays a (marginally) more difficult defensive position, albeit not as well as Hermida plays RF. and Hermida’s SLG numbers are much better away from Dolphin Stadium. both could make a move to play LF and do just fine out there.

so who is the mystery guy? would you trade Owings to get him?

by Charlie Scrabbles on Dec 10, 2008 1:53 PM EST reply actions

why would I trade for Edwin when I already have him?

i would too, by the way

i was just trying to illustrate that Hermida could be a good candidate for a breakout, much like our lovable EdE. a move to an easier defensive position would help, and moving from Dolphin Stadium into GABP would really boost his LH power numbers. he SLGs 60 points better on the road, and he OPSs 1.202 at GABP (in 31 PAs). i like it.

I’m all for young talent. Worst case, trade him to someone else later. Something tells me that’s what Bowden’s trying to do in DC. If he collects all the available OF’s, then everyone has to come to him. Bwa-hahahha!

Rather have DeMeathook

I’ll take the right-handed bat of Delmon Young over Hermida any day. If the Twins want to deal the attitude problem, I think Dusty can set him straight. Young is 4 years younger than Hermida and has base-stealing ability.

Young has pop (I know last year’s numbers were a disaster) but he was trying to play small ball, too much.

True happiness is best shared.

I'm for good hitters, regardless of LH or RH

Votto and Bruce are the only starters guaranteed spots for next year, right? Why would adding a 3rd lefty bat hurt and why are the Reds so determined that the outfield bat that they add be a righty?

lefty or right

they need a bat or that offense looks iffy

by saboscork on Dec 10, 2008 5:59 PM EST up reply actions

Sabrs fell in love with his 2005 in Carolina (AA)

He was 20 years old in AA
386 ab’s
49 xbh
111 bb
89 k
23 sb/2 cs
.293 avg
.457 obp
.518 slg

I think the 95bb and 243k the past two years years over 931 ab’s is quite a bit worse than folks expected out of his plate discipline. He also seems to have been injured a lot the past three seasons.

There’s enough there IMO to go after him if the cost were someone like Owings. But there appears to be too much risk if their true asking price is 2 top pitching prospects. I wouldn’t give them Bailey + Owings.

Apparently Walt is good at playing "coy"
"He’s tough," Towers said. "He’s such a likable guy, but I can’t read him. I’ve never been able to read him. And I mean that in a good way. He kind of reels you in and plays hard to get.

I don't get the RH bat fetish

first, we have a few good RH bats – EdE and Phillips – and the catcher we acquired isn’t too bad. We have 2 good LH hitters – Votto and Bruce. Now, if we still had Dunn and good Griffey, I could understand the desire for a RH bat, but we aren’t nearly as LH heavy as people think.

Plus, most pitchers are right-handed!!!

Hermida's ZiPS projection

271/352/468, 117 OPS+, 479 AB, average defense in either corner. Consistent with rojosoto’s comments about Hermida’s minor league pedigree, Szym’s spotlight profile projects for him a non-trivial chance of a real breakout.

by ken on Dec 10, 2008 5:36 PM EST reply actions

Thanks!

I’m ready for Szym to hurry up and release all his ZiPS projections so I can start using them regularly as well. Looks like his numbers are in line with the other projections though. Sounds like Hermida has a good chance to be a solid bat with some decent breakout potential.

Fish want catching for Hermida.

This from Geoff Bakerof the Seattle Times:

“Some quick Mariners talk before I get further into this post: the Florida Marlins, in need of catching help, have apparently offered outfielder Jeremy Hermida to both the Mariners and the Texas Rangers. The Marlins need catching, as I said, and Mariners Class AAA prospect Rob Johnson could be of interest, though we’re not sure whether that specific name was discussed.”

Of course, this is the guy who wrote yesterday that the Reds had signed Livan Hernandez, soooooooo …

by Thundering Turtle on Dec 10, 2008 5:55 PM EST reply actions

Baker will always be known here as "the beat writer who cried Livan"

We don’t really have much to satisfy them on that front, do we? Would they want Hanigan? Ramon? Would Mesoraco be too much?

and he wouldn’t do it. They need catching now.

I think they're looking for

major league-ready catching. Rob Johnson would fit that bill and take over for Matt Treaner if he is non-tendered Friday. Mesoraco would be too far away, I suppose.

they could be looking for catching

but Florida strikes me as the kind of team that, in these situations, they look for the best available talent. if they want to make a deal for Hermida, they will ship him off to the team that offers the best acceptable talent.
