Mackanin Gets Job With Phillies
Pete Mackanin seems to be moving pretty quickly up the ladder. After posting a 49-31 record with the Reds as the interim manager, he was brought to New York as a pro scout for the Yankees... Same job he originally had with the Reds if I'm not mistaken. Now he's joined the World Series Champion Phillies... as their Bench Coach! Story can be found here.
The guy has kept moving up... Expos, Pirates, Reds, Yanks, Phils... Congrats Pete!

Barry Bonds get a job selling guns
It’s the second week of deer camp and the beer is getting low
And all around our deer camp is a ring of yellow snow…
Bonds now blasting deer instead of baseballs
Barry Bonds has put down his bat and picked up a gun in his new role as spokesman for Christensen Arms, a munitions company that specializes in high-powered hunting rifles.
“It gets your blood pumping,” a camouflage-clad Bonds says as he stares through the scope of a 300 Ultra Mac rifle in a seven-minute info-video for the company.

We got ourselves a catcher!
It’s…Ryan Jorgensen.
Kevin Barker was also signed.
And Texas re-signed Elizardo Ramirez.

The Giants sign Edgar Renteria
Honestly, I might have done that deal for the Reds. A 2-year contract is low enough risk and I think Renteria will bounce back this year. I especially think he’d be good offensively in Cincinnati.

Is it me?
Or do all the signs seem to be pointing to the front office being content to go with Sea Bass as their starter for next season? Hopefully they know something we don’t.

I don't know
maybe Walt stopped sending Edgar Christmas cards and Edgar holds it against him. Or maybe they don’t want to spend big bucks on another player if they can avoid it. I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt, until January.

I'm not saying they should have signed Edgar "I Don't Practice" Renteria
It just doesn’t seem like shortstop has been a position they’ve targeted for upgrade. I know it means basically nothing, but Fay reported in his blog that his sense was that Gonzalez was the starter unless he wasn’t healthy, and that Keppinger and Janish were the primary backups. To me, that doesn’t seem like an acceptable way to approach the position, but maybe they know that Gonzalez’s knee is healed. I dunno. I’m just nervous.

The Fay
says the Reds have inquired about Furcal. Though he doesn’t think anything will come of it.

Really?
His defense is in danger of slipping into the Keppinger zone, going from -1 to -9 plays in the last two years per the Fielding Bible. His RZR has also dropped two years in a row and was virtually last in the AL last year. For good measure, Pinto has him near the bottom by PMR. If he hits again that could make up for it, but I wouldn’t want to pin my hopes on a dead cat bounce from a 33 (?) year-old middle IF.
Meanwhile, the Twins continue to shop Delmon Young ….

By no means is he the ideal player
And yes, his value would be purely on the offensive side. But I’d take the gamble on his bat over Keppinger or Gonzalez. And I’d take his defense over Keppinger and possibly Gonzalez coming off of a broken knee and not playing for a year.
He wouldn’t be the first guy I would sign, but I’ll take him over doing nothing.
And I still don’t have a lot of interest in Young. I’m not as fascinated with his upside for some reason.

At this point, he may not even outhit Keppinger
Renteria’s track record isn’t consistent – in the last five years he has the two good years with Atlanta sandwiched by three mediocre seasons. At least with Keppinger we can dream that he rushed back from his knee injury and that his true talent level, at least for the next year or so, is close to his ‘07 and early ’08 production. I don’t know if there is a similar explanation for Renteria’s dropoff other than he seems to slump when traded to an AL team.

I guess I just don't believe Keppinger's true talent level is that high
I don’t think he’s as bad as he hit last year either, but I think if he plays everyday he’s more likely a .700-.730 OPS guy. I still think Renteria is a .775-.800 OPS guy and if you put him in GABP, he might even OPS over .800. I just don’t believe that Keppinger can hit right-handed pitching all that well. Renteria’s not that great versus righties either, but the 75 point difference between them is enough to not totally kill Renteria’s value with the bat.
Dave Cameron had a good breakdown of Renteria yesterday, when it was still believed that he had actually been signed. His drop-off could be a matter of random variation. His peripherals still look very good.
And again, Renteria is not at the top of my wishlist. I’d rather have Roberts or Beltre or Furcal. But at two years, I’m more than happy to take a chance on Renteria.

It's not set?
Ageing player signed by SF; sounds official to me.
Cameron’s breakdown was interesting (it’s where I got the fielding bible #s), but I still wonder why Renteria’s offensive production is all over the place if his peripherals (LD% particularly) are stable. Still, you’re probably right that Renteria will outhit Keppinger. I just don’t see it making enough of a difference to warrant $18m that could be put towards an extension for Volquez or Bruce.

Me neither Ken
Kepp, Gonzo, Jerry Jr. certainly aren’t my choice(s), Who knows if Gonzo will ever play again or at least at what level. But nearly 2mil for Renteria isn’t the answer.
