Drew Stubbs - A Big Question Mark

Fortunately for Drew Stubbs the Arizona Fall League has just concluded its regular season.  I watched as Drew struggled against minor league prospects hitting  for a less than robust 200 average -- which more than dispells the suggestion of some that he should be in the 2009 mix in the Reds outfield.   (Heaven help both Drew and the Reds)  The Fall League  historically doesn't always tell a complete story about potential,  but if you witnessed Drew's slow bat in action,  or the number of slow rollers he bounced to the pitcher's mound, you could not help but question whether this terffically afficable 1st round draft pick will ever pay major league dividends.

Certainly, on the basis of Fall League performance I would characterize Sean Henry as an infinitely better outfield prospect.

That's why we don't make such an evaluation on any single set of 85 at bats

regardless of the league. I think Stubbs is still a question mark, but not because of the AFL.

Why have I been blogging for so long? It's certainly not because of the paycheck. Because I could be making a lot more money as a doctor or a professional athlete.

What's the layoff time

between season end and AFL? Are those AB’s coming at a time where he hasn’t picked up a bat in a month? I suspect that rhythm is crucial for any batter.

AFL started on 10/7

so he had a month off, but I’d guess he kept working out since he probably knew right away that he was going to the AFL.

The reason I don’t think the AFL is that important is
1. he could have been tired from playing a full season
2. he could have been working on specific things that the Reds wanted him to work on for next year
3. it simply could have been a slump – out of rhythm, etc.

The foolishness of this FanPost™ is the belief that this small sample of performance should be any more indicative of his future than a full season or 2.5 years in the minors.

And yet

I’ll admit that I have an involuntary eye tic when I realize that Tim Lincecum is sitting at home polishing his Cy Young Award right at this very instant.

As to the rest, I agree with Slyde.

high school coach

had a list of excuses/reasons for poor performance on the locker room door

It was about a hundred items long, but the only two I remember were “girlfriend too friendly” and “girlfriend not friendly enough.”

Drew might have broken up with the love of his life, could be sleeping on a mattress that gives him a sore back or is seeing a lot of sliders in his diet of pitches. Who knows.

Maybe Drew got some bad advice

from Mr. October.

From his blog it sounds like Drew just ran out of gas in the AFL.

Lots of guys were out of gas

I talked to three different Reds in the AFL and two of the guys in the HWL….. all were pretty much tired and noted that others were tired as well and you could really tell which guys were still running on full tanks.

Drew had an ugly AFL, but his 2008 was a success. He doubled the amount of line drives he hit from 2007, walked more than 2007 and struck out less than in 2007. Can’t ask for more than that I would say. He is still in the discussion for Cincinnati in 2009, just not likely in April.

Stubbs has a long way to go.

Dickerson is much more ready to play at the MLB level. Stubbs also swings like a girl.

Why not?

Japanese team drafts 16-year-old girl

“I always dreamed of becoming a professional,” Yoshida, who is 5-feet (152-centimeters) tall and weighs 114 pounds (52 kilograms), told a news conference Monday. “I have only just been picked by the team and haven’t achieved anything yet.”

Yoshida throws a side-arm knuckleball and says she wants to follow in the footsteps of Boston Red Sox pitcher Tim Wakefield, who has built a successful major league career throwing a knuckleball.

Yoshida took part in a tryout held earlier this month and passed with flying colors. The right-hander held male batters hitless for one inning in the tryout and her successful outing helped her become one of the 33 players picked in the draft.

You're right

I have my page set to display a lot of FanPosts, so the FanShots are way down in the bottom corner, and I never look at them.

I think we should get rid of the stupid FanShots, if our SBNation overlords allow it. It’s not like we’re flooded with FanPosts. And people get around the length limit by posting short FanShots filled up with nonsense words.

Personally, I hate FanShots. I’ve posted a few, but the format is just way too limited. You can post a link or an image, but not both. It’s stupid and pointless.

It’s stupid and pointless and ridiculous

as well as demeaning, lackluster, redundant and appendix like – having outlive its usefulness.
