Slyde was in the newspaper this morning
And no it isn't because he is a sexual deviant.
http://news.cincinnati.com/article/20081102/SPT04/811020447/1071
It was written by Eradi but Slyde "contributed" I guess he sent some emails from his basement. It was nice to finally see some intelligent writing in the Enquirer. Erardi should be promoted to Fays position. It would be fun to listen to him and Marty in the booth in the second inning. But thanks you Slyde, you have shown countless fans like myself the light of sabrametrics.

Is there a way
that we can get Erardi to cover the Reds full time for the Enquirer? Its always refreshing when he has an article come out that actually makes sense in the Enquirer about the Reds.

I've always felt that Mr. Redlegs guy is kind of a douche
Seems like the typical close-minded, know-it-all sportwriter who couldn’t possibly budge from the paradigm he’s developed. God forbid the Reds try to be creative about how to make the team better.

BTW
I don’t completely think that the ideas posited in Erardi’s article are the best way to do things, but anybody who thinks that this team can be competitive in 2009 with making major changes is fooling themselves.

Exactly
I’ve fallen out of the delusional idealism that “if everything goes right this is a playoff team”. First, everything goes right exactly 0% of the time. You have to have insurance for the inevitables injuries, down years, etc.
Also, I was mainly referencing the redlegs dude above.
I don’t care how great your points are, you lose me immediately when you throw out geek, nerd, mom’s basement, etc.

I actually don't mind the name calling
what bothers me more is the complete dismal ideas because it comes from a “stat geek”. That’s what I hate about that guy.

That's what I'm getting at
They don’t confront you with facts, but rather attack you for being a “stat geek”. If someone has to immediately attack the “character” of someone before confronting their ideas, I have no interest in listening. I can hear the mouth-breath from here and I’m not interested.

It would have been nice
to have Phillips play SS last season aft Kep’s injury.
We would have a better gauge if Brandon is at the point where he can be a plus defensive shortstop.
I really like the platoon idea at 3rd base with Gonzo and Kep. If Kep is fully recovered from injury- that plattoon would come pretty close to 800 OPS with possible top defensive play at 3rd base.
Move EE to LF and continue to develop the 2-3 good corner prospects in the minors.
I would disagree that Cincy could not make a TB like jump in defensive. They had by far the worse left side defense in the league. Plus Dickerson would be better in center than Patterson; Bruce would be better than Bruce/Griffey and certainly it is not beyond imagination that EE would be better in left than Dunn.

im not so sure about moving EdE to left just yet
though i have no idea how the left side infield defense is going to be fixed otherwise. i really think EdE is going to get better, i mean, ive been a big proponent of patience on his behalf, but he wasnt really any better this year than he was last year. there comes a point when patience runs out. im not there yet, but im closer than i was a year ago.
maybe he would be much better in LF. i still like the idea of Cody Ross, whether we move EdE or not. Ross kills lefties and Dickerson cant hit them to save his life. thats an effective platoon. having those 4 guys in our outfield would be the strongest outfield we’ve had in a long time.

The problem is the Reds just don't have as much room for improvement
The 2007 Rays were -71 RAR on defense. The 2008 Reds were -8 RAR. Justin and I both agree that that number is probably lower than normal talent level, but it’s pretty much impossible for it to get to the level that TB was at. So, when TB moved to +22 RAR on defense this season, that made a ridiculous improvement that is pretty much impossible for the Reds. I don’t disagree that the Reds can make some serious improvements on defense, but they’re just not going to get the same level of improvement that the Rays did.

I love it
The first 4 comments illustrate it all. It starts with “Erardi’s an idiot who listens to stat geeks who don’t know anything”, and a pointless error filled diatribe that would make Justin cringe. Then the guy with a completely inane comment bashing EdE, and a guy who wants to tell you what he would do and not even address the article he’s commenting on in the first place (and he’s wrong there, too). Thank goodness for RR.

Erardi's an idiot, Slyde's a commie.
I wouldn’t let EdE date my daughter, and I would see if Kevin Youkilis is available because he’s a Cincinnati guy.
Ummm, what were you saying about RR?

wow.
just wow.
I had no idea they could be so…. let’s say, in a different place.
So, here’s a question. I don’t think that the Reds are going to do anything like Erardi, Slyde, and Jinaz suggest. I think they are going to do the conventional thing, get a RH bat who is not very exciting, just like Mr. Redlegs wants. When Gonzo goes down, they’ll play Janish at short, to the tune of another 10 runs below average.
What will they all say when the Reds go 77-85 next year? Will they just blame it on EdE? I mean, the stuff they propose is so crazy, you know it won’t work. But presumably, they won’t admit to it after the fact…
just wow.

There are a lot of teams that talk about getting Roberts
absent some alien technology, he’ll only play for one. My impression of the Orioles is they want premium players. My guess based on the miscellaneous comments by Doug Melvin and the media in Baltimore is that they set the price for Roberts at Alcides Escobar, perhaps with additional players.

Ultimately the name Brian Roberts is just a place holder
The overriding point of the article is that the Reds aren’t going to be competitive in 2009 without some major upgrades at a couple of positions. Roberts would be a great player to have – and I think the Reds have the depth of prospects to get him, if not that one superior prospect overall – but really you could put a few different players names in there are possible acquisitions that could make the proper amount of impact. The real problem is that whoever it is that they would get is going to cost quite a bit to acquire. That is to say, the Reds still have a lot of work to do.

I don't disagree
but what teams don’t need some big upgrades at a couple positions? Brewers, Astros, Cards and I would argue the Cubs in the Central all have some big holes they need to fill to be competitive.
Cubs excelled this year using some scrap heap guys and getting career years out of people like DeRosa and Dempster. Brewers got some excellent play from Gabe Kapler.
Maybe one or two high quality players plus some value guys. There aren’t many infielders floating around though. Maybe a trade with the Pirates for Freddy Iforgothisname at 2nd. He had a down year and they sound like they are dumping salary and wouldn’t require a huge bounty.

The difference is that those teams need a couple of players to try to put themselves over the top
The Reds need a couple of players to even be part of the conversation at this point.

Christ in a perngiun suit!
After reading/listening to Eradi, Cdork Rosenbud, P Dick, Lance and Alan Cutler over the last couple of years there is no question…none whatsoever..that Slyde should be the only media representative re: the Reds for the WLW and the Inquisitor. Slyde – Emperor of Sports Media.
It will definitely require more than a couple of second tier moves and a hope that everything will go ‘right’ for this team to compete in 2009. Doesn’t anyway remember who the manager, pitching coach and batting instructors are on this team?
EdE could well be a part of a deal to get a 1st tier, one or two year rent-a-player, who can hit for power and can play a decent LF.
Slyde is right, not the brainless pundits on the radio or non-RR baseball blogs.

This is a preview of the Epiphany when He returns as an Emperor Aptenodytes forsteri.
We will bankrupt ourselves in the vain search for absolute security.
