Giants sign Affeldt
Andrew Baggerly is reporting the LHP Jeremy Affeldt has signed a 2-Year contract with the San Francisco Giants. Terms have not been announced, but I would bet since he signed so quick its probably a deal worth 6-8 Million over the two years. Maybe they gave him a shot at the rotation similiar to the Reds last year, or a shot at being the closer. Affeldt was a type-B free agent so the Reds will recieve a sandwich-round pick.
He has some nasty stuff, and should be even better in the NL West. I was hoping the Reds could have retained him, but obviously they already had Bray and have a lot of money in Cordero, so spending 3 or 4 million a year on another lefty isn't the best use of funds. Good luck to him in SF.
Here is another story on the signing from the SF Chronicle.

Well now we are stuck without a strong evangelical Christian on the team...

Five years from now
I won’t remember that Affeldt was a Red. Mainly because I’ll be living under the overpass and won’t have an internet connection. Life without Baseball Reference would lead to a new Great Depression.
Why have I been blogging for so long? It's certainly not because of the paycheck. Because I could be making a lot more money as a doctor or a professional athlete.

What's Corey Patterson?
I think he’s Type F — The Reds have to give up a fifth-rounder because they lost him.

I think you get an extra draft pick for keeping Patterson on your team. It’s some sort of compensation for giving him a job and the suffering that comes with it

Dan Lamar (for Pete Rose)
At the time, you never would have thought we’d end up with the better of that deal, but look at Dan Lamar now. Not only did he lead the Reds to four more World Series championships, passing all of Rose’s records along the way, but he also went on to be a fantastic mayor of Cincinnati who improved the national reputation of the city, got Mike Brown to sell the Bengals, developed the waterfront and hosted the 4-day Maplethorpe festival.
Funny how things work out sometimes.
The season doesn't start until the Cincinnati Reds take the field! Reclaim The Opener!!

I am a bit suprised.

The folks at McCovey Chronicles are pretty chuffed about the signing
Can’t say I really blame them. I would have liked Affeldt back, and that would have been a really reasonable deal. Oh well. More money to throw at Cherry Hudson, I guess.

Obviously this was a career year for him
But he’s going to be 35 by the end of that contract. Before this year, he’d only had an ERA+ over 100 three times. Maybe they’ll plan to put him back in the bullpen towards the end of that contract, but jeez. Yes, I think they’ll be screwed by it, and it will work to the Reds’ advantage over the years.

Seems rich
Lohse signed for 4/41m a few weeks ago, and if I had to sign one for four years I’d take Kyle.
Also, this might be the largest contract ever for a former Red, which doesn’t say much abou the talent we’ve lost this decade.

Talk about bad timing for Dunner
In the heyday of baseball making tons of money in the midst of a great economy, Dunn would get PAID. But I’m not so sure owners will be willing to commits large sums of money to anything less than a sure thing. (except the Cuns, who are retarded)

Yeah but
Dunner’s about as close to a “sure thing” as there is in baseball. His performance is so consistent that an owner or a GM will know exactly what they’re getting. That kind of certainty has got to be worth something, right? Particularly when it’s hitting 40 home runs every year.
Also, with FJM going to the big food metaphor in the sky, everyone is free to praise Dunn’s consistency without fear of internet mockery.

Dunner
Yankees beat writer Peter Abraham posted some free agent predictions. Here’s what he says about Dunn:
Adam Dunn: There is a distinct lack of buzz around Dunn for some reason. The statheads love him because he’s a sure thing every year. You live with the strikeouts but he gets on base and hits home runs. The baseball guys hate him because he has no position and doesn’t seem overly interested. Washington, a dying franchise already, needs a spark. Prediction: Nationals for three years and $36 million.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

I would love him at 3/36
I know he’s not coming back—there are too many burnt bridges—but only committing to his age 29-31 seasons at 12M per would be a great deal.
