Friday Open Thread: Where's your head on the Reds?
I may have scraped the bottom of the barrel for Reds new right now. Today is the day that free agents can start talking with other teams. As you know, that probably means the end of David Weathers's tenure with the Reds. Assuming Javier Valentin and Matt Belisle aren't back, that means the only players left from the 2005 squad are Ryan Freel, EdE, and Aaron Harang. Doesn't that seem like a lot of turnover in just 3 years? Granted that team was bad, but for a team that doesn't play much on the free agent market, they sure have gone through a lot of players.
The latest word from Walt Jocketty (via Fay) is that "the Reds will look to trades first and free agency second." Jocketty added:
“I don’t think that’s going to happen right away,” Jocketty said. “It could. You never know until you start talking to people but I don’t expect it.”
So, we may be twiddling our thumbs here for a bit.
Then again, maybe something might happen quickly with Bronson Arroyo. In case you haven't heard, Jayson Stark mentioned:
We're hearing the Reds are quietly investigating whether there's a market for Bronson Arroyo. One team believed to be mulling Arroyo: Texas.
I wonder if an Arroyo trade would get Saltalamacchia or Teagarden in return. Of all of the Reds starting pitchers, Arroyo is the one that I'd be most open to trading. Then again, I'd be perfectly happy with him as the #4 starter next year too.
I think we'll start to see a few more rumors flying around leading up to the Winter Meetings, but I doubt we'll see much major activity. Where's your head on this? Are you optimstic that the Reds are going to make the right moves? Do you think we'll see something soon or do you expect that Walt will wait to strike?
Use this thread to discuss that or anything else going on around the game. Dump any rumors of interest in here as well.

Bronson
I’m in agreement about Bronson. I’d be perfectly happy with him on the team again next season. He eats up innings and keeps the club in games without being spectacular, though he can be that from time to time. The nice thing is that in this market, that kind of pitcher with his level of experience can bring quite a haul.
Youth wins games; veteran presence wins championships!
Keep Bronson
Bottom line, he makes this team more watchable. He’s the best interview on the team by far.
The answer might be to take offers for Bronson AND Harang midseason. If teams are willing to overpay for quality starting pitching it would make sense to go with a youth movement. Grab some a handful of good prospects and shore up the pipeline.
This position would be greatly supported if Homer emerges.
yeah i do like it when bronson talks about adam dunn's contractual situation.

Sorry to keep inundating the site with soccer stuff
But this was kind of fun. Someone in England decided to imagine where the teams in the English Premier League would be relocated if they were all moved to America. Sort of surprisingly, Ohio got three teams. Not so surprisingly, they are all pretty crap.
So residents of Cleveland, Columbus, and Toledo, say hello to your new EPL teams: Middlesbrough, Stoke, and West Brom!
I watched that game (match?) last night.
I won’t lie, I actually enjoyed it. It reminded me, slightly, of a world cup atmosphere. Unfortunately, I was too lazy to try to get a ticket to see it in person though.

i swear to fucking god if i read from one more fan or writer
that the Reds should find a left handed starting pitcher I will fucking find them and hurt them. I have read for many different sources that Mulder would be a good pickup because it would give Cincinnati a left handed option. I guess Eric Milton would be a good pickup too based on that logic.
"It is a damn poor mind indeed which can’t think of at least two ways to spell any word."-Andy Jack
I don't think that they should pick up Mulder
but I think they will, just for the reasons you mentioned. Jocketty ties, no lefty in the rotation, it’s easy to imagine the Reds making this move.
"My wife ain't never ran and got me no pheasant." - Fistbands
i mean if they could get Mulder with a minor league deal and a spring training invitation
and incentives laden deal if he pitches in the Majors that wouldn’t hurt anything. But if he gives Mulder a $2 Million major league contract that would be pretty wasteful. I am guessing Mulder at best will be a shell of what he once was, and probably will spend a alot of time rehabbing, pitch in the minors, get hit hard, back off from rehabbing, start the process over again, to have the same results (like Paul Wilson in 2006). I just can’t imagine the catcher needing a glove to catch his fastball, with all the work that has been done on his shoulder.

Teagarden
He’s the only Texas catcher that I like. He plays good defense and has some pop. Laird isn’t an improvement over Hanigan. Salta-whatever isn’t really a catcher…the same goes for Max Ramirez.

Until proven wrong
I’m sticking with what I said in the previous Jockety thread: They’ll sign Burrell (because they need a “RH LF”, and they’ll go after Beltre (because not a single person in the organization believes in EdE, or ever has).
It’s also interesting that Stark would mention trading Arroyo when he also lists “veteran starting pitcher” as something the Reds “need”.
Often wrong, never uncertain.
Is it just me
or is this one of the more awkward headlines they could have written? I had to read it like 5 times before I had a clue what they were trying to say.

would it be prudent to sign Derek Lowe
and trade Arroyo to the Rangers for a catcher not named Laird? of course, it would depend upon who we got in return for him, but is this an idea that could gain some traction?

I would like to see Kerry Wood in Cincinnati
but he is brittle and too much of a risk for a mid-market team, since he will be demanding a multi-year multi-million dollar contract. But I would love to see him and Coco split the closers role, imagine Burton-Wood/Coco for 7-8-9, and Bray is around too.

MLB Trade Rumors
says the Cards have made an offer to Felipe Lopez.
And the Yankees have made an offer to Sabathia. Apparently, Swisher is one of Sabathia’s best friends, which is a big reason the Yanks signed him.
A lot of Yankees bloggers expect the Yanks to sign Dunn or Teixeira along with Swisher, but Yankees beat writer Pete Abe says that’s nuts, and I agree. They’ve got Swisher. They might go after a center fielder, but they don’t need another first baseman/corner outfielder type. They’re going after starting pitching.
All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?
if Dunn goes to New York
he’ll miss Marty, tHom’s and Brantley treatment.

am i the only one who kinda hopes CC completely blows out his arm next year, like tears his capsule, rotator cuff, and labrum? He comes back from that in 2011, and in his first start back, he tears up his elbow and needs Tommy John. He actually comes back from those injuries in 2013 but tops out at about 85 MPH, and the Yankee’s don’t know what to do with him as his contract is through 2015.

Not me
From everything I’ve seen, Sabathia is one of the best guys in the game. Genuinely nice, humble, and very appreciative of where he is in the grand scheme. MLB needs more guys like him, I hope MLB markets the hell out of him when he gets to NY.
"Aio, quantitas magna frumentorum est."
I would feel bad for Sabathia
but at the same time this contract will leave him more than set for life. Plus an injury just creates an opportunity for another pitcher.

The NY mentality is the bigger the better, and Dunn fits that mold. Reggie Jackson anyone?

Peter Abraham
posted some photos of the new Yankee Stadium today. The one of the broadcast booth had this caption:
Just think, five months from now Joe Morgan will be sitting here explaining how wins and losses determine the worth of a pitcher.
And holy crap, the Yankees have offered Sabathia a six-year deal worth $140 million. He’s said he wants to go to the west coast and stay in the NL, but money talks.

Because they’re tired from a long season. Not unusual at all. Also, invariably, someone stars in the AFL and some team overpays for him in a trade because of that and then is disappointed.

I’m excited about trades that would garner the Reds ML-ready or ML-experienced players, relatively young, who would be under their control for several seasons. As much as I’d hate to give up Arroyo, who has done much to stabilize the starting pitching, he’s also the one guy of value I’d be most amenable to trading. Especially if he gets the Reds a young, promising catcher in return…those guys aren’t easy to come by.
