Reds to hire on another failed GM
From Hal:
The Cincinnati Reds are set to announce, probably late this afternoon, the addition of three top-notch front office people.
General manager Walt Jocketty confirmed this morning to The Dayton Daily News that he has hired Cam Bonifay, Mike Squires and Jamie Quirk.
They are additions and there are no substractions.
Bonifay and Squires will become special assistants to the general manager and Quirk will be a pro scout with additional duties as directed by Jocketty.
You may remember Bonifay as the GM of the PIttsburgh Pirates from 1993 to 2001. There he developed a pleasant reputation for giving big money to not so great players.
After that he worked for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays as their director of player development and scouting until 2005. While there, the Durham Bulls won 3 straight International League Titles. They also drafted BJ Upton, Elijah Dukes, Delmon Young, and Andy Sonnanstine, as well as a couple of others who did not sign like Jacoby Ellsbury and Andrew Miller. I'm not completely sure what role he played in their drafts, but it looks like it was a mix of good and bad, with only Upton being the clear success so far.
It'll be interesting to see if we hear much from Bonifay or the previously hired Bill Bavasi. Neither has a very good track record as a GM, but that doesn't mean they won't be useful. Hopefully Walt won't let them muck things up like they did at their previous jobs.

Sounds like these guys can spot talent
They just shouldn’t be negotiating/signing contracts. As long as they turn up the leads and Jocketty is left to close the deals, this could work out well.
Given our overall draft history, there’s a good chance they won’t make things any worse.

I wonder.
You see it in other sports all the time — a great assistant is a lousy head coach. Maybe that’s how it is with Bavasi and Bonifay. Maybe they just weren’t cut out to run the show, but can be excellent as assistants. That’s what I’m hoping for, anyway.

Don't forget O'Brien
his drafts were solid (Bruce, namely). I remember a lot saying “OBie’s drafts and Wanye’s contracts” for a bit.
...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield

we will see
he also had a pretty shitty team, that lost two years of recruiting, and had to play against Big East teams.

Bonifay
In addition to Sonnastine, the ‘04 draft featured high schoolers Reid Brignac (who seems to have stalled a bit, but still has time to mature), Wade Davis (who should follow Sonnastine to the majors this year), and Jake McGee (who was on the same path as Davis and Sonnastine until TJS). Also, the #1 pick that year was Jeff Niemann, who needs to be traded; he’d start for most teams, but is blocked in TB. This looks like a very, very good draft for the Rays.
Often wrong, never uncertain.

why would we want
trains that rattle all the time and turn into junk at 80,000 miles?
Plus, can you imagine turning a locomotive with a live rear axle?

Ugh
Not only is Cam Bonifay a failed GM, he may be the worst GM in history. Seriously. The guy signed players that no one else would talk to . . . and for HUGE money. Derek Bell. Operation Shutdown.
Seriously. The joke of major league baseball. Solidified Pittsburgh as the worst baseball town in America for nearly a decade. And now he works for the Reds. Terrific.
