rockies-reds talking trade
Rockies Talking Trade With Reds By Tim Dierkes [November 11 at 1:17pm CST]
Ken Rosenthal says the Rockies aren't done dealing - they're talking trade with the Reds and other clubs. The Reds like Willy Taveras, Yorvit Torrealba, and Garrett Atkins, with a "definite interest" in Taveras.
Meanwhile the Indians like newly acquired Huston Street and the Nationals are one club eyeing Carlos Gonzalez. Rosenthal says the Rockies figure to hang on to Greg Smith.
It seems we can't yet judge the Holliday trade for the Rockies. It did seem odd that they would acquire a closer and a young center fielder, two positions at which they already had solid options.
so what do you guys think about this possible trade? i am pretty sure it would be a deal involving homer bailey, i am hopeing that this deal gets done some time soon because it will definetly help out the reds to be more competitive next year
Comments
If we give COL Homer Bailey for any one of those three
I’ma be MIGHTY pissed.

I like how other teams like the good players
I’d seriously rather see Kenny Lofton in CF rather than Willy Taveras.

C Trent has some really good insight
Taveras: Coors Field .233 avg, .303 OBP (which is way low for a leadoff guy) and .265 and .312 on the road. In 91 games as a lead-off guy last year, he hit .202 with a .264 OBP — didn’t they just have Corey Patterson? Slugging? The guy had just 18 extra base hits in 538 plate appearances. Really, wouldn’t you think he’d leg out a couple of more doubles? That said, he has a .331 career OBP, which would be a wet dream for Patterson. Taveras had a career-high 68 stolen bases, despite the career-low OBP.
Torrealba: His AVG/OBP/SLG line — home .252/.298/.450. away .240/.289/.344. And he lost his job last year to Chris Iannetta. He’s a backup at best.
Atkins: Talk about a Coors Field bump… in 2008 his splits are .342/.380/.523 at home and .233/.278/.383 away. And if you think it’s just a bad year, .337/.394/.527 career at home and .260/.328/.424 away. Atkins also had a +/- of11 according to John Dewan at third base in 94 games. Encarnacion had the worst +/among third basemen at -21 in 143 games.
We’d might as well resign Corey. Atleast he got 29 extra base hits.

I'm hoping their GM is thinking like the commentors at Purple Row
I wouldn’t expect a major name, but perhaps a couple of surprising under the radar young arms like Ramon A. Ramirez or Bill Bray to come back. If it’s Atkins, then you would look for a more marquee name like Cueto or Homer Bailey to be included.
They want to upgrade on Encarnacion pretty desperately, I think the fit is a little better than you’re seeing. I forgot to mention that they might be trying to sell high on Jerry Hairston Jr, who had a career year last season at 32. He’d actually make some sense straight up for Torrealba or as part of a package, but I’d rather give them more to try and pry away Brandon Phillips.
Those were both by RoxGirl, one of the admins at Purple Row. I don’t mind commentors asking for this, because they don’t really know our system, and I sure as hell don’t know the Rockies. But if we were balking at giving up Cueto for Holliday, we sure as shit aren’t trading him for Atkins. Bill Bray is nearly untouchable in my mind (certainly when we’re discussing the likes of Taveras and Torrealba). And of course Hairston is a free agent, so we’d have to sign him, then trade him, which is all kinds of silly.
Is there anything the Rockies have that would make you want to trade BP? Troy Tulowitzki?

He made a helluva lot of plays out of the zone that year
In fact, a lot of 3B did that year, which leads me to believe that Baseball Info Solutions was doing something different in 2005 that they aren’t doing now. I’ve just run Justin’s numbers straight, based on the calculations he developed in 2007, but that may not be totally accurate for 2005. I’ll email him and see if he’s got any ideas as to what’s going on. I think OOZ might be overvalued that year though.

looking at it more closely
there is something wrong there. There are 28 3B that were “worth” 10 runs or more defensively, including EdE who only played 478 innings that year. Disregard the numbers from 2005 at this point and I’ll stop posting them until I can get it fixed.

If we got Atkins or Torrealba, I'd be absolutely pissed.
But strangely enough, I wouldn’t mind Taveras that much, as long as we don’t give up too much (Freel? Please?). Of course I know I’d start to hate it after he’s batting leadoff after a sub-.300 OBP through April, but the guy is capable of stealing bases. I guess it’s the feeling of helplessness with Dusty as the manager. If Dusty’s going to play Dustyball no matter who he has on his team, we might as well surround him with guys who can run and play decent D. At the very least, he’d be what most idiot Reds fans want in CF, and it’ll be fun to watch their reaction as he fails miserably.

and also, it’d be a damn shame if you get frustrating posting here. I’m way too much of a coward to argue over anything greater than baseball, but I appreciate that its usually done civilly here. I couldn’t imagine the arguments that happen here happening in Real Life. Take this from someone who just got back from a class where a kid posited “bombing mosques will remove extremist clerics, thus ending terrorism.”
When I told him that firebombing churches wouldn’t exactly make anyone feel warm and fuzzy, he said “but Islam isn’t a REAL religion.”
So at least there’s none of that bullshit. I really dig your point of view…I don’t want to see it go.

Minor League transactions
According to Baseball America:
Cincinnati Reds
Signed: C Ben Davis (Camden (Atlantic)), 2B Luis Bolivar
Released: RHP Hugo Calderon, RHP Tyler Rhoden, C Frank Meade, 1B Eli Rimes, 3B Brett Bartles, OF Anthony Gressick
Removed from 40-man roster: LHP Bobby Livingston
Davis, the second overall pick in 1995, latched on with Camden after the Orioles released him in June. The switch-hitting catcher, who will be 32 next season, has logged 486 games in the big leagues and 686 more in the minors, where he’s a career .256/.316/.404 hitter.
Bobby Livingston has been playing long enough to be a minor league free agent, so I believe that the Reds’ removing him from the roster means he can sign anywhere he wants. Though perhaps the Reds are hoping he’ll choose to stick around.

If you know anyone who needs just-graduated students, or any place that’ll send me anywhere from Turkey to India, I am very, very, interested. If you dropped me a line at AJKohn@umd.edu, I would really appreciate talking to you. I need an insider…everyone else just grumbles “you should’ve gone into engineering.”
As a bribe, I give you this article on the great mystery about how Obama just hired a guy who oversaw the doubling of the Lithuanian suicide rate as his chief economic advisor. Sorry, cheshirecat.

He ain't hired yet
and if he is… well fuck. I’m moving to England in a few months. Maybe I’ll go fiancee hunting and disappear into Europe if shit hits the fan under Barack. That being said, I do pride myself in being optimistic, so I really wouldn’t get too desperate over not going immediately to law school. You are obviously quite smart. Get some low paying job doing translating work or working outta DC fpr a couple years to bank some money for law school.

Don't do law school for lack of better options
It’s three years of time and money that can be better spent finding out what it is you want to do. Don’t enroll unless you’re fairly sure you want to be a lawyer or unless you get into a brass ring school. Too many people fall into law school because they weren’t sure what else to do, which is never a good way to decide your career.
There are and always will be plenty of great jobs for lawyers, but I see the profession thinning out going forward. The recession should accelerate two trends which will curb growth in the profession – outsourcing and billing changes. There’s already a movement to outsource routine work often done by junior associates to India (which makes sense; you don’t need a J.D. for most of it). As for revenues, there’s a growing chorus against the billable hour, which helped fuel the explosion of big firms in the 70s and 80s. Even if the billable hour remains, you’re not going to see the yearly rate rises that the profession has become accustomed to.

Much better news from the Rockie front
7:37pm: Tracy Ringolsby of the Rocky Mountain News says the Reds have definite interest in Atkins, but not Torrealba or Taveras. The Reds like the idea of adding Atkins’ righthanded bat. They don’t like Torrealba’s price and Taveras’ inability to get on base. Ringolsby says the Phillies, Angels, and Twins are also after Atkins.

It would be worth trying. Although he may throw the ball from left field into the 1st base stand a few times.
Might take a little pressure off the guy, if he doesn’t have to ‘think’ to much…you just hang out in LF (land of the fishermen) and then go jack a couple every week.

Unrelated to this post at all, I really like that Rotoworld news feed on the side of the main page.

I tried it out. I like it, but it sure seemed to slow down the main page load. I’ll keep working on it.

No worries, I just enjoyed the quick read of some of the minor leaguers
If it causes problems, I’d be perfectly happy without it.
