Time to start drinking: There's a game on soon!

Yeah, I know, I find it hard to care about this, but the Dodgers and Phillies are playing.  Does anybody have any good reason why I should support one team or another?

You could read the crappy yahoo game preview here.  I bet it's thrilling.  I don't really know, since I haven't actually read it myself...

Or we could just talk about politics or the economy or the Office or something.  And what's everybody drinking?  I'm avoiding the beer so far since I'm actually attempting to get some work done, but don't let me keep you from drinking...

ouch

Financials got hammered today, because the ban on short-selling was lifted.

Tomorrow could be interesting, with the three-day weekend coming up. People are going to be afraid to hold anything, for fear that some momentous news will break over the weekend, leaving them with toxic waste on their hands.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Oct 9, 2008 8:31 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Incidentally...

short selling bans don’t actually have any effect beyond the very short term. Well, and the stupid psychological effect.

This place is like a sexy preschool.

by Gray on Oct 9, 2008 8:33 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think they do

Yes, there are ways you can get around it. But changing the rules in mid-game like that is one of the reasons people are so spooked. People who got caught with their shorts down lost their shirts. Now they’re afraid to stay in the market, for fear the rules will change again without warning.

I know someone who manages a hedge fund that specializes in shorts, and he will probably have to close it.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Oct 9, 2008 8:40 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I know it feels like they should...

but the empirical evidence is not there, and even suggests that allowing short selling may be a net positive. See e.g. this working paper.

This place is like a sexy preschool.

by Gray on Oct 9, 2008 8:46 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That's not what I'm talking about

The problem is changing the rules in mid-game that way. It screwed a lot of people including a lot of people who had nothing to do with the collapse of Lehman or AIG.

I think there will be long-term effects. Nobody wants to play a game when the biggest kid can change the rules whenever he wants.

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Oct 9, 2008 8:57 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh, reading back...

I think I misunderstood what you wrote. I now think you were saying that the bans were bad, but impactful in the very short term. That I can agree with.

Academic economists would almost uniformly argue that short-selling bans are a bad idea. I don’t know if policymakers have gotten that point yet, though. Hopefully they’ll get it after this time.

This place is like a sexy preschool.

by Gray on Oct 9, 2008 9:00 PM EDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I watch the market every day

I feel like short term bans are effective. Those academic economists need to get out of their parents’ basement. There’s more to the market than just numbers, you know.

Though even worse was the collision in center right between Bubba and Sheff. Freakin’ Olbermann even named Bubba “worst person in the world” because of that. It wasn’t even his fault, fer crissakes. Sheff ran into him.

And it’s not like that was the only reason they lost that game. There was the botched hit and run (thanks, Bernie), Cano being called for running outside the line (thanks, Joe West), A-Rod killing a ninth inning rally with a clutch GIDP (boo!), etc.

i have a question

am i the only one who is worried that Obama will be assinated?

With the apparent anger by people about his more than likely Presidency. I have read quotes of people saying things with racist underpins . I feel like I was sad and angry when Bush won, but never crazy.

No matter how effective of a President he is, if he is assinated all fucking hell will break lose in this country, with this on top of a financial Crisis, and 9/11 is still in the back of our minds somewhere.

John Kennedy was assanited in my freshman year in high school and

I still vividly remember kids yelling in the halls things like: We’re saved from the Pope and the Papist asshole got what he deserved. Back then in small towns all across the country a great deal of people were terrified that Kennedy was an agent of the Roman Catholic Church and somehow his Presidency was controlled by the Pope. Fast Forward 45 years. There are, I am dead certain, in small (and big) towns across the US a great deal of people who are certain that Obama is a Muslim Jiihadist – Radical Nigger Socialist, who will corrupt the values of the country and is the puppet of Islam/Black Power/ the Socialist left etc.Yes, I worry that he’ll be assassinated..but I also believe that if he wins the presidency, (I think he will) he does have the intellect, the depth of character and organizational ability to lead the country through the shitstorm that is just now starting to hit us …however, the job is more than daunting – times of extreme difficulty require and create men and women of exceptional leadership. I believe that Obama has the skill and the will to be an exceptional leader. Right now Leadership is paramount.
Never under estimate the power of Fear.

That's a real concern of mine for John McCain if he were to be elected -

I believe there are Palinites out there who are highly disturbed people. These are the kind of people who bomb abortion clinics and get their followers to drink cool aid. I am not kidding when I say that within a 6 – 12 month period McCain could find himself dead (not necessarily by natural causes) and have Sarah the Impaler on the Throne.
