Micah Owings
How does he fit into the Reds plans next season? Possible #5 starter? The Reds only used him as a pinch hitter this year I know, not sure if he was injured or what the story was. The top 4 spots seem to be pretty much sewn up. Harang, Volquez, Arroyo, Cueto...after that it's anyone's guess. Would like to see Bailey step forward but I really think he gets traded this off-season. Just was curious.

homerun...
I would like to see how Owings would do as a number 5 guy next season also. Call me crazy I wouldn’t mind seeing him get about 200-250 at bats playing left field as well. He looks like an athlete and with a little work I think he could add some serious versatility to the Reds pen. Would his defense be as bad as Dunn? Or how about Carlos Lee? i just think it would be worth the attempt.

Owings will be 26 next year
and along with Homer, Maloney and Ramirez, there are a number of options for the 5th spot. the depth is good, but not good enough that i think we should trade any of it.
Owings is interesting, as he has hit well as a DH and PH at the same time that he’s shown that he can get major league hitters out with his good rookie year pitching. he struggled this year, but he was hurt too. i think we need to make sure he doesnt work out as a pitcher before we start thinking about turning him into a LF. remember, a run saved is worth more than a run scored.
and furthermore, though it seems he is a good enough hitter to step in and thump the ball right away, thats not likely to happen. he will most likely need at least a year of full-time hitting to acclimate himself to it. that means the minor leagues.

either way I think he should be on the roster. It would basically give us a 26 man roster.

Give him a chance to earn that fifth starter's role.
If he does, the pitcher’s spot in the batting order no longer is an almost sure out. I like his bat, but it’s his arm that is going to determine his worth as a major leaguer.

It was crushing defeat for the Herd
But at least they’ve got one really fast guy who really is white. Makes for a more diverse loss.

Is Owings really a legit prospect?
Or is he just a freakshow? People are intrigued by him because he’s a pitcher who can hit. But is he a good enough pitcher to really make it? And is he a good enough hitter to really become a full-time position player? I wonder if guys like him just intrigue clubs but really, if you look at it rationally, he can’t really do anyone thing well enough to make a difference. Its fun to have a guy in the bullpen who can also throw on a helmet and go bat when you’re out of bench players, but is that worth a spot on the roster?

He's a risk, like a lot of young pitchers
But he’s also a legit prospect. He’s a 3rd round pick from ‘05. As a rookie last year he performed reasonably well, with a respectable 109 ERA+ and decent K:BB numbers in 27 starts. He started off great this year (4.17 ERA after 11 April and May starts, 61:20 K:BB) but ran into some problems in June, maybe because of the shoulder problems which ended up sidelining him. We’ll have to trust Kremchek on the shoulder and the pitching coaches to right any mechanical problems Owings had this past year.

Hmm. Need to think about that for a second...
“Trust Kremchek on the shoulder”? poke…poke…
Trust “the pitching coaches to right any mechanical problems”…? Dick Pole?
Based on past results, I think we should stick him in LF and not even bother with that.
Hey Dusty...Are you sure you're OK? You might need an MRI.

No, the hitting thing is a more recent phenomenon
His initial fame was the fact tha the didn’t lose a gme for almost two full years . . . or something like that. He really can be a quality pitcher. He was just never bad enough for any coach to move him off the mound and into another position.
