SIS: Red Reporter gathering Thursday
By now some of you have heard about the free concert given by Cincinnati's own - and my second favorite band - The National on Thursday in support of the next President of the United States. The National and Dayton's own The Breeders will be playing from 5-8pm on Fountain Square.
We need a LARGE turnout here to show SW Ohio that we are serious about change. And even if you want more of the same, come by and listen to two awesome bands (one more awesomer than the other) (yes, I know awesomer isn't a word) play live FOR FREE in Cincy.
My god, do I love this band. They're like the Second Coming of Bono. Seriously, seriously, seriously, if you want change, send this info and kidnap all of your friends and take them to Fountain Square on Thursday. Seriously, because like, seriously, you could support a candidate, but if you don't lift a finger for your candidate, he might lose. Also, HAVE YOU VOTED YET? Do it. But also inform your friends, family, enemies, coworkers, bartenders, and neighbors about this event. Seriously.
My bet is they save Mr. November for last. Barack won't fuck us over, he's Mr. November.
My other bet is that they are trying their best to get Barack on the stage on Thursday. He will be, after all, debating in Toledo Wednesday night.
Seriously, come. If you are between Sidney and Cincy, I will personally come to your house with my car whose muffler seems to be falling off even though it's a 2002 model and drive you in my unairconditioned car all the way to Cincinnati although you have to find your own way back unless you live between Springboro and Cincy. (Story not interesting.)
If you are coming, let's hook up for a beer or ten.
Seriously.

he's been in ohio all week
the debate is in toledo.
he’s been knocking on doors in toledo suburbs! i’m sure he’ll be back in the next three weeks – but he can’t ignore florida or virginia or even – gasp! – north carolina.
i missed the free springsteen concert in columbus last week because i was moving uc students from campus to the polls. i could have just skipped it and now wish i had gone.
isn’t it funny – we have springsteen, the national, and other great musicians. they have ted nugent. (even toby keith is a democrat and an obama supporter.)

I find it fascinating
I’ve always considered Cincinnati a relatively conservative area, and I figure’d that a blog in support of its main team would’ve been a good cross-section of the city. But RR is like, overwhelmingly liberal, no?
Why is that? Is Cincy actually liberal and I’m wrong? Or is this blog just randomly more liberal than the city itself? I know that theres a lot of expats and non-SWOhioans here, but I still think its sort of bizarre.
Theories?

In my experience
People on the internet lean liberal. Not all mind you, but a much larger percentage. Think of your average Republican – mid 50s white dude that barely knows how to use email, much less belong to an active online community.

i think you got it here
add to that the fact that RR is very radical, in baseball terms. the sabr stuff is the soup du jour here, and it flies in the face of baseball common knowledge. we are revolutionaries in baseball analysis. there is nothing more liberal than flipping off the establishment.
also, can we write a manifesto for the wiki?

I'm rec'ing this post because the RR manifesto is an awesome idea
And because your point is spot on.
New school baseball thinking → RR → liberal bias
Old school baseball thinking → 700WLW → ridiculous conservative bias

That's the flip side, to be sure
Even if they’re not jobless they’re typically in a lower paying job and mad at “the old guard” because they have the all important “stuff”. (I looked for the old SNL clip of “I want stuff! Where’s my stuff??” but couldn’t find it in the 4 seconds my attention span allotted, sorry.)
Personally I don’t consider myself a Democrat or Republican. Both sides have views on issues that appeal to my beliefs. I try to weigh one candidate versus another and pick the one who best represents me regardless of party affiliation.

I spent about a month in the area over a decade ago
I did it while traveling to a dozen or so states doing field political work. I spoke to thousands of individuals along the way and the area was somewhat eye popping in its conservatism.

Cincinnati is very conservative
Get out of the urban area and into the imediate suburbs such as Delhi, Western Hills, etc, you will find some of the most Conservative people. Southwest Ohio tipped Ohio, and the Electoral College for George Bush 4 years ago. That is why Paul Hackett’s close raise with Jean Schmidt a few years ago was so stunning.
PS I wanted Hacket to run for Senate so baddly, I was kinda pissed when the powers that be pushed him out.

I thought it was extremely classy for McCain to state that Obama was a good man. Granted, he got booed at his own rally…but that took some stones. If this was Y2K version of McCain it would be a no brainer. But, 8 years of W is the slipperiest slope to climb ive ever seen.
Palin delivers an excellent prewritten speech, no doubt about it. Uh, she struggles, to say the least, ad hoc-ing intelligent answers to unexpected questions. is there a country in america that would hire her as CEO? beep. beep. beep. is there a Fortune 500 company that would hire her as marketing director? beep. beep. beep.
she’s flatline.
(and im a registered Republican.)
I cant see how Obama isnt the next President. I about died hearing on WLW today how people “somewhere” all misread the Obama Biden political signs for “Obama Bin Ladin”. Really? And we let those fuckas vote?!?

McCain’s defense of Obama was really weird in one respect. The woman said Obama was an Arab (she probably meant Muslim) and McCain interrupted to say no, Obama is a good man (i.e. not Arab?). He just really should have thrown in a “not that there’s anything wrong with that.”

Yesterday I had to drive up to Lebanon Ohio
Between Cincy and Lebanon and including Lebanon I counted something like 5 Yard signs for Obama and approximately 45 for McCain. My cousins all live in Auglaize County and they are so in love with Sarah! that it makes me want to puke. There are no black people living in their world…they are terrified at the idea of a Negro winning. Yep, this election is going to be groundbreaking and extremely divisive, at least if Obama wins.
I won’t be able to go to fountain square – it is, after all bowling night. However I expect that Mrs. M will be there…she’s truly a commie liberal Democrat.

yard signs
this election, yard signs are no measurement.
1. here in sidney, there were a ton of obama signs up until this past weekend when nearly all of them seemed to be stolen. this has been quite common across the country in this election.
2. the obama campaign doesn’t spend much money on yard signs and they are extremely scarce. same goes for buttons and stickers. the campaign is spending all of its money on television advertising. a lot of people have purchased those home button maker machines to make their own. to get a bumper sticker from democrats.com has taken weeks for some people. glad i got mine in january.
3. some people are afraid to put obama signs out, whether for fear of them being stolen, their houses getting vandalized, or because they don’t want their neighbors to know they’re voting for “the black guy.” this is particularly prevalent in the south and in conservative towns.
i’m willing to bet there are a lot of signless yards between lebanon and cincy that are votes for obama come nov 4. my longwinded point is that i don’t believe it’s going to be divisive at all but the opposite. i think it will finally give us the real race dialogue we need rather than the PC race card stuff we always hear about.
but what does an optimist like me really know?

538 did the definitive piece on yard signs this cycle
Listen.
Organizers – the people out there killing themselves to win this election – hate yard signs with the white-hot intensity of a thousand suns.
Barack Obama’s organizers hate them. John McCain’s organizers hate them. It’s because yard signs don’t vote – but they do generate a ridiculous amount of complaining that must be patiently listened to. Until yard signs sprout little legs and go to the polls on Election Day, in a presidential election with universal name recognition they are just a nice little decoration.

God this article perfectly understands gets my opinions on campaign crap
At least 20 times a day, someone will come into one of my offices and ask for yardsigns, bumper stickers, etc. Then, after I tell them that I have to personally buy all that crap because the campaign rarely supplies it, they get all pissy and leave. Less than 5% of all the people that come in actually ask what they can do to help. A higher percentage of the walk0ins come in to tell me that there’s a special place in hell for those working for the Antichrist. Invariably, as soon as I get 50 signs in, they get stolen or sprayed with “KKK” 24 hours later. Then these people get more indignant as to why I don’t have more fucking signs.
Anyway, I just don’t get the hate in this race. I’m trying as hard as I can to run a positive campaign out here and half the population of the town I’m in wants me dead. I completely respect the other side, and get told I’m the problem with America 15 times a day. This country is just too god damn polarized right now. It’s driving me insane.
So, sorry that was a rant encompassing both yardsigns and intolerance. I’m just at the end of my string and have no one to shout it to out here

there’s a lot of tension in rural and industrial ohio. personally, i was flipped off in a store the other day when a guy saw my button. but i can’t imagine what it’s like in a red state, esp the south. well, i guess i can imagine – i just have to get out a history book to see what can happen.

I don't know where I fit in the mix.
I sense the left lean here on RR, so we’ll just say I add a little balance, maybe.
I’m a registered Democrat, yet quite conservative. Yeah, I long for the next Reagan. I’m highly disappointed with the Bush presidency. I am not the least bit excited about McCain, but can’t convince myself Obama isn’t Jimmy Carter 2.0, not that there weren’t particulars that I liked about Carter. An unwillingness to play political games helped derail the Carter presidency and his own party was a great contributor to that.
I am weary of the stereotypes that liberals are all baby killing commie pinko athiest fags who hate America and that conservatives are all money grubbing holier than thou racist war mongering hypocrites. Can anyone bring us together? The last guy to do that was named Bin Laden.
We’ll not get as far as we can until we stop hoping the other side fails. If Obama is elected, or McCain for that matter, I hope he is the greatest president in the history of our country.
So, fire at will, wave the flag or fling a stone or two. Meanwhile, back at the playoffs …

The thing that annoys me about politics are the folks who are so dead-set on a political party. What sucks about this upcoming election is no matter the outcome there will be a large group of pissed off people. And they will likely stay pissed for the next 4 years. Just plain silly.
I’m not a huge fan of either canidate, or even either party right now. But I would have to give Obama the slight edge, just because his election would immediately restore a lot of strained international relations from the Bush administration. All of you do realize that everyone outside of the U.S. hates the U.S., right? Oh, and I’m quitting if we go to war with Iran, probably sneaking across the mexican border to become a cactus farmer.

Something to add about the problem with politics as usual:
I would also add that as an organizer, I am wary of presidential elections because they generate a lot of energy and political consciousness for a few months and then one candidate wins and another loses and most people collect there yard signs and scrape off their bumper stickers and go back to their normal lives.
We have a philosophy in the organizing school where I work here in Santo Domingo that reminds us to avoid organizing people solely for the sake of having activities, workshops, or other events. On the other hand, we focus on how we can use activities, workshops, and events to organize people.
The point is that elections tend to be an attempt by each side to mobilize and grow their base in order for their candidate to end up victorious on election day. On November 5, the main purpose of people being mobilized will end and the energy behind that movement will also dissipate.
The issues that are important in this election- health care for everybody, jobs that take care of and mean something to the people that do them, violence free communities and nations, education that teaches us to think and not just repeat- are not just important every four years but are important everyday of the year. The energy and collective action needed to address these issues thus needs to be daily energy and daily collective action.

Interesting comment
One thing I hope is different with Obama is that the energy will continue past his election. Though it certainly won’t be as intense, with Obama’s community organizing background, I wouldn’t be surprised to see him continue to try and tap the grassroots to help him govern as well. He has alluded to this many times in his stump speech – certainly during the primary he would say it. The campaign doesn’t end on election day. He needs all his supporters to stay engaged and help him pass meaningful legislation. We will see…….

i think the energy in this campaign
was started years ago. i think there is genuinely a renewed interested in involvement. i met a heck of a lot of people on the dean campaign who were getting involved for the first time in 2003 who have remained involved in all the time since then.

Pay no attention to that man on the soap box!
But since everyone else is doing it . . .
I’m Republican. and I’ve voted for every Republican since I’ve been able to vote (a month after Dole ran). I’m definitely voting for Obama this year. And I’m definitely sure that McCain is a complete asshole. A hero for sure, but a complete asshole.
Agree or disagree with his “policies” and “plans,” Obama should make more Americans more confident about themselves and their country. He’ll still tax us more, and some plans will end up doing more harm than good . . . but at least they will shake this stale country up a little and make us look at things with a differnent perspective.
If you support Obama, then please let me on your bandwagon. However, can I beg you to stop accusing Republicans of being racist pigs, ignorant assholes who don’t know the difference between Obama and Osama (there’s a big difference between having a double-take of a Obama-Biden sign and truly thinking that Osama bin Laden is running for president), thieves who steal Obama campaign signs, and lunatics who spend all day in front of the White House with signs who “accuse” Obama of being a Muslim baby killer? Do you seriously think the country is made up of the kind of people that the tabloid network and cable news channels make us out to be?
If you support Obama, SURPRISE! YOU’RE WINNING! You don’t need to hit the panic button and start riots by painting a false picture of what “McCain voters” look like. McCain is losing and will naturally start throwing sticks, stones, the kitchen sink, and whatever else he’s got left. Please take the high road, okay?

I believe the Libertarian logic would be
that either way, we are stuck with the same bad system. At the least, Obama is likely to be less of a war-monger than McCain. Libertarians hate the Iraq war. Libs also don’t care much for the evangelical christian super conservative wing of the Republican Party. Church-State separation is a big one for Libs

As a former Harry Browne voter
I feel compelled to speak up. In my experience most true Libertarians (or third party voters in general) refuse to play the lesser of two evils game. I know some who cast “gum up the system” votes, trying to keep the two parties equal so that nothing can get done (Libertarians want nothing more than their government to do nothing). This is akin to providing arms to a Middle Eastern country fighting a more powerful Middle Eastern country in order to keep the region “stable.” I also knew someone who simply voted against all incumbents. Cincinnatus would be proud.
And Zach, I object to your characterization of McCain not being conservative enough for Libertarians. Libertarians reject the one-dimensional view of politics as a continuum from Left to Right, preferring a two-dimensional model.
All that said my Libertarian ideals are suffering a great crisis right now. This hit particularly close to home:
The best thing you can say about libertarians is that because their views derive from abstract theory, they tend to be highly principled and rigorous in their logic.
…The worst thing you can say about libertarians is that they are intellectually immature, frozen in the worldview many of them absorbed from reading Ayn Rand novels in high school. Like other ideologues, libertarians react to the world’s failing to conform to their model by asking where the world went wrong.

Ok you might have to dumb this down for me
but I don’t understand why you brought up the two dimensional model? McCain is not conservative though and you can look at his voting record to see that. I don’t think I even mentioned the right of the left though.
That article was a tough read but I think the website Campaign for Liberty is one the author Jacob Weisberg should check out. The Austrian School of Economics sides with Libertarians and True Republicans outlook on the economy. Some younger libertarians are obviously just a libertarian because they want drugs to be legalized but we have that in every party.

my bad
I think I just assumed the right-left thing when you said “McCain is not conservative enough for us.” I wanted to challenge the thinking that Libertarians are more conservative (or farther right) than Republicans. Traditionally there’s been a “Libertarian wing” of the Republican party, but since I’ve been of voting age the Republicans have been so wack on social issues that I can’t imagine breaking bread with them. My first vote was for McCain in the 2000 Ohio primary.

I think he was motioning to Bob Schieffer
McCain did one of those little dances where you don’t know which way to go in trying to get around Schieffer’s desk to shake his hand. Afterwards he did this little “How are we doing this? Blah!” move that’s captured there. On TV he was facing the camera and it was kind of humanizing or endearing. But it looks bizarre from that angle as a still frame.

I definitely agree
Will be a very interesting night. I don’t think this is gonna be the blowout people think it will be. My gut feeling is that McCain is gonna win Ohio, Florida, Nevada, Indiana, and West Virginia. Obama will get the other Big 10 states and New Mexico. That leaves Colorado, Virginia, and North Carolina (which is really shaping up the be the closest race in the country) with McCain needing to run it to win. He’ll get NC barely, but not the other two. Just my opinion.
