NLCS GAME 3

Time for a new game thread, since the last one was on Friday.

LA Dodgers      vs.      . Philadelphia

Starting pitchers  Hiroki Kuroda vs   Jamie Moyer

The Dodgers need a strong response to the Phillies to avoid falling into a 3-0 hole from which no NL team has ever escaped in a playoff series. The only AL team to do it was Ramirez's Boston Red Sox against the New York Yankees in the 2004 ALCS.

There was also a crowd of Red Sox fans there, and a crowd of Penn State fans. Let’s just say my buzz was harshed.

If we had a RB who didn't drop the ball or get arrested, I'd agree with you.

But the Bengals have absolutely no talent at RB. Ryan Fucking Fitzpatrick was the leading rusher today. With how bad the OL has been lately, I’d agree it’s a problem, but it won’t be worth spending the 1st overall pick on (which at this point, I fully expect to get).

I have tix for the Eagles game

I had the choice of that of the Chiefs on 12/28, the last game of the year. I chose the Eagles because of weather/holiday reasons but I might change it just to show up with an “0-16, make history!” sign.

If anyone would like to point out a remaining game they will win, have at it. My guess is that they shut Carson down soon, making this team completely useless.

If we got Oher, I wouldn't be disappointed.

I think Moreno is a more dynamic RB than Wells, but the blatant homerism in the Bengals front office would trump it. Can you imagine the moronic fan revolt if the Bengals passed on Wells to draft Moreno?

then it's just a consitently dumb call. Dallas got saved on that one, and a fumble earlier in the game that was missed

it was an egregiously bad call. Romo’s forward progress was said to be stopped.

As for the dumbest rule in all of sports, I nominate one that came up last night in the LSU Florida game. An LSU player fielded a kickoff, and got one foot down. However, his second foot came down out of bounds. Instead of just giving calling the return dead, and spotting it where the LSU player stepped out, they called a penalty as if the kick had gone out of bounds. The ball was then moved all the way to the 40 yard line!

Cowboys make a play to the 40 yd line, spike it with 3 seconds left. There was an injured Cardinal behind the line, so it was an encroachment penalty moving it to the 25. 52 yd FG attempt, Cards call a TO to ice the kicker as they block the attempt. Second attempt is good, now we’re in OT.

yeah it sounds fun

but i wouldnt know. Caray and McCarver drove me off about an hour ago. i couldnt take the whole schtick about how things were better back in the day, when Dryesdale would hit everyone and Vin Scully taught us all about the ol’ ballgame. nothing turns me off more than that old-fashioned Luddite baseball bullshit.

As an outsider, the Reds look like a team that could add maybe 2 nice pieces and some value pieces and be playoff contenders. Has Jocketty said whether he’ll sign any free agents? Furcal would be nice.

The Cubs got Edmonds and Johnson, their CFers off the scrap heap.

oh, and congrats on the playoff appearance for you all. even if it was short-lived, its gotta feel good after 25+ years.

I wouldn't mind Furcal

But we’d have to find a taker for Alex Gonzalez.

I’m not so sure he could ask for the world after missing 120 games with a bad back.

Yeah, but

his 160 OPS+ when he did play has been a great example of what a small sample size can do for someone.

Also, he made almost $14 million this year. Seriously?

by Gray on Oct 12, 2008 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Probably expensive due to the shortage of good SSs, but maybe not crazy so because of the back like jch24 says. I mentioned him only because he seems like he would fit well on the Reds. Slide Kepp to 2nd maybe and kill two birds? Really I just meant that you have some premium players including a lot of nice pitching, so it wouldn’t take an overhaul to compete next year. Besides Gallardo and Parra, I’m not looking forward to watching Suppan, the 12.5 million dollar big game pitcher, Dave Bush and who the hell knows pitch next year.

by ol Pete on Oct 12, 2008 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Keppinger should never be starting

If Keppinger starts at any position, the team is not going to make the playoffs.

This place is like a sexy preschool.

by Gray on Oct 12, 2008 11:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Brandon Phillips would probably be better at 2nd than Kepp

There’s also an ever growing “move Phillips to SS and sign Mark Ellis” contingent around these parts…

my addled mind forgot about Phillips

Sure seems like there is a current shortage of middle infielders. Brewers, Cubs, Cards, Pirates all seem to be looking just among the NL central.

...which is precisely why

i wouldnt want to overpay for a guy like Furcal.

The general feeling around here (at least the feeling I get)

is that Jocketty is going to go after some kind of big acquisition, and he’s pretty much came out and said he doesn’t like the current free agent market, so a trade is likely. He’s looking for a RH bat, and upgrades at SS, 3B, CF, and C all are pretty plausible. The problem is we’re stuck with expensive utility guys like Ryan Freel, Jeff Keppinger, Alex Gonzalez, and Norris Hopper, and we really don’t have a place for all of them.

by BK on Oct 12, 2008 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions

i think Jocko will do right by us

i wouldnt mind trading for Adrian Beltre and moving EdE to LF, but aside from that i dont think i would condone any big moves. it probably wouldnt be the for the best if we signed a big contract like Furcal or Manny or traded for Maggs.

but what im really afraid of is he will go out and get another speedy CF type, even if Dickerson and Stubbs are ready or near-ready. if Coco Crisp or Shane Victorino or Willy Taveras are starting in CF and leading off for us next year im gonna lose it. big time.
