Reds Fans Really ARE the Smartest in Baseball!

Fans of Pete Rose and Ryan Freel could have told you this years ago, but there's a new internet article (chance that it's flawed - 0%) that says sliding headfirst is the faster way to go.
Lone nut, er, respected engineer David A. Peters of Washington University explains why:
The reasons that it's faster to lead off with your noggin all have to do with physics, Peters said.
Specifically, it's a matter of the player's center of gravity (or center of mass) — essentially the point where gravity exerts its tug. For most people, their center of gravity is right around the stomach area, Peters said.
Whenever you leave the ground, no matter which end of your body you lead with, your center of gravity will move forward with the speed (and momentum) you left the ground with, Peters explained.
Two factors make you reach the base sooner if you dive head-first, Peters told LiveScience. One is that your arms are lighter than your legs, which means that as your body rotates, your arms are going to extend out farther than would your legs. Also, because your feet are still pushing off the ground as you dive, you can get a little extra acceleration.
Of course, sliding head first also means you have the possibility of going past the bag (cuz you're going so fast!), while sliding feet first will let you pop up at second base, like a ball off Corey Patterson's bat. Sliding head first also means you're really sliding hands first, and can lead to jammed fingers. So really, it seems like the advantages of a faster slide are mitigated by these potential hazards.
But that sort of hand-wringing is for girls and Cardinals fans. The most important thing about sliding head first is that is merely a manifestation of your entire playing philosophy: BALLS OUT, BITCHES!
So there you go. The people at Washington University are no smarter than Ryan Freel. And no, they didn't reject me. I turned them down! ...jerks.

But...
…you’re still a bonehead if you slide into 1B. (Melky Cabrera, this means you.)

ask omar
I heard Jon Miller ask Omar Vizquel about this.
Omar said, “Of course its slower to slide into first! But sometimes, it confuses the umpire, and he gives you a call.”
Awesome.

So does Prince Fielder slide head first or ass first?
And the answer is:

This thread has too few Arrested Development references.
I think we overmeet as a society.

Didn't they do this on a Mythbusters basball show?
The same one with Roger Clemens, steroid user

Yeah, but they screwed up the "myth"
They only tested whether it’s faster to not slide than slide. Who the hell would run full speed into second base and NOT slide? They clearly didn’t get the “myth,” and most importantly, they didn’t test the sliding into first base myth.

Who the hell would run full speed into second base and NOT slide?
Shane Victorino. He got called on interference, and cost his team run.

Anyone Who Slides Head First....
…has whatever is coming to him. Even back when I played, it would get you benched if you tried it (no Pete Rose wannabes were allowed). The only explanation I have is that some people think it shows that you’re making a better effort than you really are. It certainly looks nice from the fan’s perspective, but the injuries are not worth it. And the first base slide (next to the sacrifice bunt) is the dumbest play in baseball. We can thank Willie Wilson for popularizing that one.

Injury risk aside, I believe there's a way to make the slide into first base work.
But no one will acknowledge it. We only get conclusions.
The excuse I hate is that if diving head first into first is faster, then you’d see olympic sprinter’s do it. No why the hell would an olymbpic sprinter dive head first across the line on a rubberized track? They wouldn’t have skin on their faces anymore! Also, does it count if your fingers cross the line before someone else’s chest? I’m not so sure about that.

A runner in (I believe) the 100 m dash at the Olympics this year
Won bronze because he basically dove at the line and crossed the mark just ahead of the 4th place runner.
BUSTED!!!

You Can't Put Injuries Aside....
….it really is the reason not to do it (head first, that is), and there is no slide into first (head, hands, legs, anything) that is going to be ‘good.’ By definition, it’s stupid. It’s the one base, next to home, in which you can keep running on a sprint (as long as you don’t round the base afterward). A sprint beats a slide every time. The act of sliding, in and of itself, slows down the runner, which is necessary when it’s a base in which you have to slide into (without risking an out), but is asinine when it’s one you can run across. Willie Wilson did this all the time and got away with it because he was so fast. People didn’t remember that most of those would’ve been hits even if he hadn’t slid. As aforementioned, it’s the most foolish play in baseball, next to the sacrifice bunt, of course.

Yes....
…..the scientist claiming the noggin first is the way to go, but this belies that it’s the easiest way to jamming a shoulder or a hand, and sliding head first into first is a waste and still slower (compared to running through the base). The Olympics thing doesn’t apply because the runners aren’t diving. They’re still running upright. Anytime you have to go down, you’re losing time. The only thing the article showed, if one believes it (I’ll spare methodology), is that it is the faster way to slide (not accounting for all of the injuries you will incur), but that is still slower than running upright through a base.
