No Reds in Southern League Top 20

It's not that the Reds didn't have talent at Chattanooga. The Southern League simply was very deep in talent. Some Reds -- Valaika, Dorn, Heisey, Lecure, Manuel and Geronimo -- likely were strongly considered for the Top 20. Here's the list:

1. Clayton Kershaw, lhp, Jacksonville (Dodgers)
2. David Price, lhp, Montgomery (Rays)
3. Cameron Maybin, of, Carolina (Marlins)
4. Matt LaPorta, of, Huntsville (Brewers)
5. Alcides Escobar, ss, Huntsville (Brewers)
6. Chris Volstad, rhp, Carolina (Marlins)
7. Mat Gamel, 3b, Huntsville (Brewers)
8. Michael Saunders, of, West Tenn (Mariners)
9. Tommy Hanson, rhp, Mississippi (Braves)
10. Wade Davis, rhp, Montgomery (Rays)
11. Chris Coghlan, 2b, Carolina (Marlins)
12. Jeremy Hellickson, rhp, Montgomery (Rays)
13. Jordan Schafer, of, Mississippi (Braves)
14. James McDonald, rhp, Jacksonville (Dodgers)
15. Ivan DeJesus, ss, Jacksonville (Dodgers)
16. Jake McGee, lhp, Montgomery (Rays)
17. Angel Salome, c, Huntsville (Brewers)
18. Michael Brantley, cf, Huntsville (Brewers)
19. Adam Moore, c, West Tenn (Mariners)
20. Luis Valbuena, 2b, West Tenn (Mariners)

Reds questions from the chat

Q: Kyle from Middletown asks:Where would Chris Valaika rank on this list during an average year talent wise? Does his increased agility give him a chance to be an average defensive shortstop in the bigs?

A: Ben Badler: When I started with a preliminary Top 20 in August, Valaika was in my 20. But the more people I talked to about him, the more he kept falling. The bat speed is so-so, the approach isn’t ideal, the tools don’t overwhelm anyone, he’s got a thick-lower half and the foot speed isn’t great. But you know what? I still like him. He has a good feel for hitting (though not necessarily good strike-zone discipline) and just good baseball instincts. I don’t think he’ll stick at shortstop, but if he can stick at second base, that’s fine. The move from shortstop to second base is a move down the defensive spectrum, but I also think the magnitude of that move is overrated. He ended up in that 21-25 range for me, but I think he has a good chance to prove a bunch of people wrong in the big leagues.

Q: Tony from Durham, NC asks:I wanted to ask about a couple of outfielders, Daniel Dorn and Cole Gillespie. Are they future ML regulars, or role players? Dorn I suppose I can see as the RH half of a great LF platoon, and Gillespie the LH half. Or does either of them profile as more than that? Thanks.

A: Ben Badler: Great question, and I think you’ve got a pretty good take on those guys. Gillespie gets a little lost in the mix of talented bats that Huntsville had this year and that the Brewers always seem to produce. He should be a solid big league contributor, sort of like a Brandon Moss-type who won’t blow you away with anything but can be a serviceable outfielder for you. Dorn’s numbers in the league this year were excellent, but scouts seemed to think the tools were a little short. Kind of like Valaika, I think he has a good chance of proving the doubters wrong. He’s a guy who people grew to like a little more each time they saw another one of his at-bats.

Hey Doug.

What’s your take on Badler’s assessment? I can see Valaika and Dorn being at least solid reserves, with a chance to be solid regulars.

Valaika and Dorn

Dorn is the absolute most underrated prospect in baseball if you ask me. 23 year old who just hit 21 HR in under 400 AB’s in AA and no one has heard of him. Boggles my mind the lack of respect he gets. He may have a problem getting into the lineup because the Reds don’t want another ‘lefty’.

As for Valaika, he would be a fine starting 2B in the majors. I am not sold on his defense at SS, even though it did improve some this year as he showed up at a lower weight which helped his range some. Still, second base is his likely future and its the reason I would honestly try to move Brandon Phillips this offseason while his trade value still excedes his production.

which is funny,

because he looks like an anorexic Austin Kearns in that photo

...because there's already someone posing as Jacob Brumfield
