Lieber back to Cubs

The news just came over the wire that Jon Lieber's going to the Cubs for one year and 3.5 million. That seems fairly cheap, but it might be inferred that Lieber took a paycut b/c he liked Chicago the first time around. Regardless, it looks like the Reds are content to stand pat and not pick up a veteran. IMO, I like this because it means that we aren't throwing money at a pitcher in his late 30s (see Stanton, Mike). If we give the 3 young 'uns a shot along with Belisle and Shearn I think we'll have 3 decent options for the back end of the rotation. Everyone here seems to think the team's a year away, but if the Central's as bad as last year, the Reds can afford to endure some growing pains before seizing control of the Central in the second half. Let's just hope Dusty agrees with me. Thoughts?

it does seem that the Reds are now

standing pat with what they have heading into the spring. though with walt now we can't really be sure what kind of dust is settling in the front office. never the less im more confident in going into the spring and letting the guys we have win jobs considering a few years ago we were doing the same thing with the likes of Mike Gosling and company rather than homer and johnny and matt.

I am relieved that we are not getting Lieber

AND HOPEFULLY NOT TOMKO OR ANY OTHER RETREADS. Maybe a deal will happen this spring, but the Reds seem to be content to go for quality this time around rather than hope that they can reserrect some over the hill guy. I'd rather have Shearn as the #5 to begin the season.

One year, $4 million. Not a bad roll of the dice for the Rangers.

Also, Kirk Saarloos is off the market, having signed with Oakland. If Krivsky was nuts for acquiring Saarloos, then Beane must be doubly bad. He has acquired Saarloos twice. I don't know why I'm in a pick-on-Billy Beane mood lately. I've always pretty much liked the guy.
