Game Thread: Game 114 vs. the Dodgers

TIME: 12:35 @ Great American

DODGERS PROBABLE:                 REDS PROBABLE:
Brett Tomko (2-9, 5.56)                Phil Dumatrait (0-1, 16.20)

It's the second career start for Dr. Düm.  He only went 3.1 IP last time out.  Given the stellar starting the team has gotten this week, the bullpen should be rested, but it's still the bullpen.  Dumatrait needs to keep the shutout streak alive and give the Reds their first 3 game shutout streak since 1963.

The Dodgers are throwing out former Red Brett Tomko who has been quite hittable this year, but otherwise hasn't pitched that bad.  You'll recall that Tomko was a part of the deal that brought Ken Griffey Jr. to the Reds.  Since that deal, Griffey has gone 7 for 14 against Tomko with a 1.611 OPS.  I'm calling for #590 today.

Star-divide

Oh, and Adam Dunn gets the day off today.  He has a .188 batting average against Tomko in 16 ABs, but he also has a .944 OPS.  Anyway, we get Keppinger in the outfield for the second time in his career.

Hopper cf
Keppinger lf
Griffey rf
Phillips 2b
Hatteberg 1b
Valentin c
Encarnacion 3b
Gonzalez ss
Dumatrait p

In case you didn't hear, Todd Coffey has been optioned to make room for Jason Ellison.

Most of my feelings
center on this massive exam I have tomorrow...perhaps I should avoid the game thread and actually, you know, study.

by Gray on Aug 9, 2007 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, and
I know Javy's been okay recently, but okay enough to warrant batting sixth?  Griffey better hit 591 and 592, just to be on the safe side.

by Brendanukkah on Aug 9, 2007 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

When Dunn sits once a week...
...then you get things like Javy hitting sixth.

by Geki on Aug 9, 2007 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

What doesn't make sense to me
is that Dunn is the only regular that had 2 mental days off since he wasn't in the lineup on Sunday and they didn't play on Monday.  Surely he's not tired?

I guess he's been struggling (he hasn't).  His last month has been terrible (it hasn't): .270/.387/.551

I'm a numbers freak, numbers freak. I'm numbers freaky, ow.

We need to get Keppinger as many AB as possible
Especially with Freel out for the season. This team is hurting for hustle.

by satyanaas on Aug 9, 2007 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions

I suspect we'll be hurting for runs
No, the Dodgers didn't score any runs yesterday, but we only scored one.  This could get ugly with a capital "Ugh."

by Brendanukkah on Aug 9, 2007 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I was surprised we weren't able to score
more runs when I came home yesterday (finally went to see The Simpsons). We had some opportunities early (based load with Griffey batting) that we couldn't capitalize on. Hopefully today will be a big offensive day. Shut out is a lot of ask for from Dumatriat.

Other than Dunn's absence..
..I kinda like this lineup.

I'm pick Hopp and Kepp to stir a lil' something up today.

And if you assume that Big Dümmy isn't going into the seventh or eighth then having Dunn on the bench to pinch hit at some point is not so bad.  (Ya get the Big Donkey out of the 225 degree temps for most of the afternoon.)

Rose's talk was "weird" - something that "might have been appropriate for a Kiwanis Club, but not for kids."

by Fat Vegas Alan on Aug 9, 2007 12:08 PM EDT reply actions

Does Dunn really need to rest?
I agree that I like it other than his absence, but that's a big exception.  Our lineup is a lot worse without him in it.

and I somehow expect that Ellison will pinch-hit before Dunn...

by Gray on Aug 9, 2007 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions

My point is that..
..if P-Mac is going to have to go the bullpen early then we'll likely see at least one pinch hitter. (Ellison early and Dunn later?)

I'd rather see Dunn playing.  Especially because now he has more free time to goof off in the dugout trying to impress the new guy on the team: "Hey Jason, ya ever catch a fifteen pound bass?  No? Well, that's cuz you're prolly not drinking enough beer.  What's your handicap?"

Rose's talk was "weird" - something that "might have been appropriate for a Kiwanis Club, but not for kids."

by Blue on Aug 9, 2007 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions

I really dont
understand all the hate for Hopper and Keppinger around here. All both players have done since they have been here is be productive players off the bench. If we didnt have BP I think Kepp would be a very fine everyday 2B. All he has done is hit in the minors. I know people dont want to see Hopper play for Dunn, but when he has played he has contributed. These 2 guys are the type of players that good team have on the bench. Guys that can make a spot start and if they have to play for a week or 2 b/c of an injury they wont hurt the team.

by CamIam on Aug 9, 2007 2:17 PM EDT reply actions

I don't see hate for Keppinger
I get the impression that most people are happy with him.  Hopper, however, is not productive.  He's been hitting the ball decently of late, but even still he has a .333 OBP, mostly from the top of order.  The problem with Hopper is that if he's not getting singles, he's not helping the team at all.

Sure, he's a good guy to have on the bench, but he's started 6 of the last 8 games and now that Freel and Hamilton are down, he's going to keep starting and batting at the top of the order.

I'm a numbers freak, numbers freak. I'm numbers freaky, ow.

I like Hopper and so far Kepp
I think it is not hate so much. I think fans are frustrated because the reds seem good at picking up the pieces to winning club that we already have (ie. why kepp when we could be seeing bruce or votto) but seem lost when it comes to picking up the parts we do need (incert bullpenner here)

I think another element
of the Hoppinger negativity here is the announcers have an orgasm every time they do anything remotely good - which, in Hopper's case, tends to be bunting, which several of are not all that fond of.

The same announcers, meanwhile refuse to give credit to guys like Dunn and Encarnacion, so it's frustrating.

As Hopper gets another single
I'll bring up CamIam's comment earlier. The other night tHom had an orgasm when Hopp advanced the runner to second by meekly batting the ball to the right side. Aside from the fact that I'm not sure Hopper was trying to do that (he took an awful swing at a ball that was inside), tHom made it sound as if that was what a hitter should do in that situation. As if any player should ground out to the right side in that situation. Many of us who congregate on this site are battling that sort of baseball philosophy tooth and nail. Unfortunately, Hopper gets caught in the crossfire.

I'm against promoting "productive outs" because it ultimately glorifies players who contribute "positively" by doing overall negative things like sac bunting, sac flying, "moving runners over" etc. Ergo, you have Reds fans who want 9 Hoppers rather than 9 Adam Dunns. Hopper is fine as a fourth or fifth outfielder and Kepp is fine as a utility infielder; the problem is that they are being feted as if they do things of equal importance to Dunn, Griffey, etc.

Probably an overcorrection on our part, but that's the nature of the beast.

speaking of having the same guy bat in all spots..
Athleticsnation had an interesting discussion about having a Hatteburg-type hitter at all 9 slots.  A "True Professional," as the BS!B would call them.  It's an interesting discussion of station-to-station baseball.  Check it out http://www.athleticsnation.com/story/2007/8/3/115454/6676

By the way, I would without a doubt take 9 Adam Dunns over any other hitter in the lineup.

by JJ on Aug 9, 2007 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Hitting
behind the runner. Its what coaches teach you to do as a player. When you have a runner on 2nd and less than 2 outs you are supposed to try to hit the ball to the right side. Now that doesnt mean you try to intentionally ground out to 2B. You can hit a home run to right field, hit a double in the gap, a bloop. However, if you do make an out, you at least move the runner to 3rd.

but it's not a good thing to do, overall. I am deadset against a philosophy that praises "productive outs." It shouldn't be condemned, necessarily, but the minute the reaction becomes more than "well, at least he moved the runner up, I guess" it's dangerous, beknighted thinking, no matter how canonical it is.

Yes
The goal is to not make an out.  Moving a runner with an out is better than not moving him at all, but it hardly "doing things the right way."

Another thing to point out
is that right after Hopper did that last night, Griffey singled to center, a hit that would have scored someone from second.  So, in a sense, it would have been a lot better if Hopper had gotten on base and not made an out since the runner would have scored anyway.

this is why
i'd like to see some sort of stat for relievers that combines their inherited runners scored with their own earned runs.  stanton would be at like 10.99.

by Daedalus on Aug 9, 2007 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions

problem is
it's not always fair to attribute the inherited runner to the bullpen guy.  If a guy comes in with a runner on second and no outs, that's really not fair to him if he gets 3 straight outs and still gives up a run, is it?

Baseball Prospectus does track Inherited Runner strand percentage, or something like that.  I'd like to see that become more mainstream.

I think
that just means that SOMETHING can happen with a Pepsi.  Obviously, the urge to pee can not be classified as NOTHING, because it was a direct result of the Pepsi (assuming you didn't drink anything else).  So SOMETHING happened.  Now, ANYTHING, on the other hand, is a tad bit more complicated.  If something deemed previously impossible were to happen as caused by Pepsi, then I guess they could claim that ANYTHING can happen, but I'm gonna need to see some proof.

If you pick any player that has played for say 10 or 15 years, you make them sound like a one of a kind player if you look at their total line of statistics for their career and try to find someone who matches that line at every point.  Just because Luis Gonzalez matches some levels that Barry Bonds has matched, it doesn't mean that he should be mentioned in the same breath.  Unless you are talking about players who had suspicious home run total jumps.

by Zach K on Aug 9, 2007 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Respect
I don't care if you don't respect me. You shouldn't; I'm a miserable prick and I'm not here for respect, but I do believe you are disrespectful to other reasoned and intelligent posters here. Why?

Because I don't believe you are looking up relevant information to support your often stalwart opinions on what the Reds should do. Case in point: you made the comment 3 times that the Reds should take a look at "Aaron Rowland" to fill an outfield space if Dunn leaves. We all misspell words and especially names all the time, but the fact that you consistently misspelled his name the same way tells me that you never looked up his career stats or his contract situation, etc: an absolute must if your going to persuade me why I should consider your opinion valid. Otherwise, your just flapping your gums to the tune of 1300 posts in 3 months or whatever. That can get aggravating.

And if you read through the great SABR diaries that Slyde et al put out as you said you did, you would know that phrases like "good contact" and "can steal a base or two" are absolutely meaningless without context, i.e. is his contact getting him on base? is his contact coming at the expense of earning walks? is he stealing "a base" while getting thrown out the other two times?

You're an affable young fellow and I respect the way you have taken a lot of abuse and rolled with it, but it's time to get serious. Posters like Slyde, Paul and Geki have taken the time to explain their thinking to you in good faith and with ample support for their opinions; you owe them the same courtesy.

by Man Mountain on Aug 9, 2007 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Thank you
But the reason i'm not a great speller is because i have Cebral Palsy I try to check my spelling for most of my post. I don't care if you guys tease me about that, but to use that as your reasoning on how I dont look up stats doesn't make any sense to me.

I have read the great Series everyone has done on SABR. I got a Bill James Book but havent had time to read it because I'm finishing two other books.

The point is unlike most people here believe that the game is all about numbers I think there is more to it than just that. I look at Dunn and I see a very solid and good player I don't need to look at his OPS to know that, it's a great reference point but watching the game is way more important than stats. For Example 2 out RBIs say Griffey had 41 this season, you would say well based on his stats he gets some bigs hits. Well what if 20 of the 41RBIs where when the reds were down 14-1 or up 9-2. It is still good to bat in runs when you can but stats can be misleading. Brandon Larson, he had a great run at Triple A but didn't produce in the bigs. If you look at his track record you would of been stumped on how he sucked so bad up here. That is why I hate Wayne Krivsky, he seems to just look at stats and track records rather than listening to his scouts when making a move.

I Respect what everyone has to say here, and i don't mind being teased but just because i don't agree with 100% of what everyone theroys are doesn't make that stupid. You guys believe stats say everything, I believe Stats are a great reference but there is more to baseball than just that. If we all have one thing in common is that we are all reds fans and want the team to win, so lets just forget about this and root the team on :}.

Find one single instance
that anyone on this site has said that "stats are everything" or that "the game is all about numbers" (and haven't been joking about it). We watch the games; there are many on this site who've watched more baseball games than either you are I ever will. There isn't one person here who believes what you said above; that's simply a strawman argument that attributes to the group you disagree with the most extreme position that group might hold.

My point wasn't that you misspelled his name, but that it indicates to me that you probably didn't check his career numbers, his peripherals, or his contract situation. The name "Rowland" would have turned up Rowland Office, Mike Rowland, Chuck Rowland, and the inimitable Pants Rowland, but not Aaron. I might be completely off base, but I doubt I am. I've made my living the past 4 years reading and critiquing position papers and argumentative essays from men and women your age, and I know when someone's flying by the seat of his pants.

It goes without saying that "stats" cannot forecast the future or tell you everything relevant about a player, but they can tell us many many valuable things to know about a player, particularly once we realize that our perception of a player's performance "on the field" can be skewed by events, opinions, and ephemera that have nothing to do with what the player actually does "on the field."

I haven't watched many Phillies games this year; neither have you. I didn't see a whole lot of ChiSox games the years Rowand played with them. If we are going to discuss the possibility of the Reds signing Aaron Rowand, I feel better arguing from a position of having seen him play a number of times AND having his relevant stats in front of me, then just arguing from a general (and vague) impression I have of him from seeing him play a few times.

I like this site because I love the Reds; I like watching them play on the field in real time more than anything else. Rather than killing that love for baseball, having a feel for the numbers actually deepens my passion and affection for it. And, I think, makes me a better observer of the game. This is the only sports blog I frequent in which the community feels duty bound to back up their opinions with evidence. I fail to do that every so often, and someone calls me on it just as he or she should. That's why I like it, and I'm pretty sure that's why so many others here like it. That may not appeal to you, but that's the community you've entered and communities tend to police themselves for better or worse. It irks me when you still dismiss metrics like "OBPjfkajf;ldfhj;hdt" or "ERAidfjiorejgii" (even tongue in cheek) because guys like Slyde are very generous in their time and patience explaining these concepts which are really no more complex than ERA or batting average.

Anyway, as I said, you seem like a very nice young man and I apologize for being unduly harsh, but sometimes being unduly harsh is the only way to get a point across. If I'm out of line on this, I expect someone to tell me. The great irony is that you seem to dislike the moves Wayne Krivsky makes as much as anyone here, but you seem to evaluate players using the same line of reasoning he does, i.e. "puts the ball in play," "steals a base or two," "good contact guy," "gutsy player that makes things happen." These phrases might me something, but without  proper context they mean nothing. Welcome to Wayne's world.

But please know that I'm with you in Reds fandom.

that's a remarkably full bench
Seems like with Narron, by the 10th inning there was one pinch hitter and 2 pitchers left.

Aren't we carrying one fewer pitcher
than we used to?  It helps that we've "only" used 5 pitchers so far.  Jerry would have passed that mark long ago...

I think there's still 12
the big change is the lack of unnecessary double switches.  In fact, there have been no defensive replacements, which remarkably conserves players for later in the game.  Who knew?

Oh...
I thought we had 13 pitchers for a while there.  At least, we did before Coffey got sent down...but was that the first time?

by Gray on Aug 9, 2007 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

we did
but it was only for a couple of days.  It's been at 12 for most of the season.
