Freel out for the season

Cincinnati Reds infielder-outfielder Ryan Freel on Wednesday had season-ending arthroscopic surgery to repair torn cartilage and to clean out the meniscus in his right knee.

Honestly, I'm happy for Freel. It's been a tough season, and I had originally feared that he was going to be lost for the season after his collision with Hopper anyway. He hadn't been contributing much offensively this season, and I think he's due for a good, long rest.

Mostly, I just wish that Hamilton is back as soon as possible.

There's no minimum

He can spend a maximum of 20 days on rehab assignment. I'm sure once he proves his wrist is healthy, he'll be back. I'd guess he'll be playing with the Reds this weekend unless he tweaks something.

Adios Ryan...

It's probably for the best, although I appreciated his play, but he's in his 30s, has had at least a dozen concussions, nearly skulling himself several times a season in the outfield, and unfortunately it was bound to catch up with him sometime. I'm hardly a believer that Norris Hopper is the answer, but when Josh comes back he'll get some ABs.

This reminds me...

Remember when Rijo was injured, it turned out the Reds had an insurance policy to cover his salary? It seems like if you were going to get such a policy for anyone, you'd get one for Freel...but what do I know?
