How would you spend $20 million this offseason?

Let's say the Reds do not exercise Dunn's option. That, combined with the end of Milton's contract, would free up roughly $20 million in payroll. Supposing Jay Bruce or Norris Hopper slide into LF, covering that position, how would you spend that money to improve the Reds? What positions and what players? What sort of contract?

I want to say yes, but the pricetag seems too high.

Three things
  1.  $20M will get you about 4 months of ARod next year.  How do you pay for the rest?
  2.  Rogers has already said he's either pitching for the Tigers or retiring.  Since he'll be 44, let him.
  3.  Jeff Weaver????  I thought you wanted to improve the team.
just....wow.

To be honest
the Reds would be much better served by picking up Dunn's option and try and trade Griffey.  There is nobody on that list that would come close to winning you as many games as Adam Dunn will, with the exception of A-Rod.  No way he comes to Cincy.  Even if you do exercise Dunn's option and don't trade Griffey, you could still have around 8-10 Mil to play with.  I'd like to see a closer and a starter, but it will be hard to find ones worth the money.

The money
It seems like the division is there for the taking.  We've got a lot of payroll opening up with Milton's money coming off the books, but what if we splashed the pot a little bit to try to pick up another quality starter?  You'd think that with the division as weak as it is, it would be a justifiable move.  I mean, as crappy as our team has been this year, we're still somewhat in the pennant race.

Maybe Castellini realizes this, but maybe he's also aware of how uninviting the free agent market is.  And as much as I want to see them "ante up" or "go all in" or "shoot the moon" (I don't know card lingo), I also don't want to see a Suppan or Meche-style contract.  Sigh.

I'm not even sure what my point is.  I think it's just frustrating that the postseason seems so close, yet it's difficult to see who can take us over the hump.

Here's the problem...
what if we splashed the pot a little bit to try to pick up another quality starter?

It's a lovely theory, but after the Buehrle and Zambrano extensions, there are exactly zero quality free agent starters available this offseason.

Armas, Astacio, Benson, Byrd, Chacon, Clemens (you know the drill), Clement, Colon, Elarton, Fogg, Garcia, L.Hernanadez, Jennings, Johnson, Kawakami, Lawrence, Lohse, R.Lopez, Maddux, Mays, W.Miller, Moehler, Ohka, both R.Ortizes, Park, Ponson, Schilling, Sele, Shimizu, Silva, Thomson, Tomko, Trachsel, Uehara, Wakefield, Wasdin, Jeff Weaver, K.Wells, P.Wilson, both J.Wrights, V.Zambrano, Affeldt, Chen, Estes, Fossum, Glavine, Milton, Od.Perez, Pettitte, Redman, Rogers, Rusch, Wells, Wolf

Every one of those guys is either very old, very mediocre, or has absolutely no desire to come to Cincinnati (specifically Clemens, Pettitte and Wolf, the only 3 I'd be willing to pay free agent dollars for).  The market for starting pitching is historically bad.  I'd rather roll the dice with one of the Japanese guys than give a long-term deal to Jason Jennings.

Yep... not only pick up his option
But just re-do his whole contract and keep him here for a few more years.  I have yet to hear a free-agent name that excites me at all.  I'd rather take my chances with what we've got.

Arod
Not that he will be signed for 20 million, but since he was an option on the poll, there is no way you don't take him.

by dougdirt on Aug 31, 2007 2:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Right.
The assumption that A-Rod would be available for only $20 million a year (considering that a middling kind of guy like Carlos Lee makes $15-16 million a year) dictates the answer that you take A-Rod.

I have a feeling that $20 million will be teams' first offer rather than the one A-Rod winds up taking.

Exercise Dunn's option already.

If Krivsky doesn't exercise Adam Dunn's 2008 option, I'm a Mets fan until they fire him.

by Paul Householder on Aug 31, 2007 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I pick up Dunn's option.
This free agent class is incredibly poor. Maybe take a flyer on Paul Byrd, if Cleveland doesn't pick up his option, but it will.

Jason Jennings can't be as bad as he is this season can he? Maybe try to acquire Josh Towers or something? Just thinking out loud. Not a lot there.

I was thinking recently
about the possibility of going after Byrd. You've got to like his control, but I think he's liable to give up Eric Milton type home runs and is a little old to give an extended or pricey contract to. I can see Bowden giving him 2 or 3 years.

The answer is Yes.
Jason Jennings can't be as bad as he is this season can he?

Jennings is a bad pitcher who had one fluky good season that he will parlay into a big free agent contract from an idiot team hoping he can recapture the entire season of dumb luck he had last year.  He didn't significantly improve his K/9, BB/9, or his G/F rate in 2006; the only thing that happened was a few extra fly balls stayed in the yard (probably due to the humidor), and a few extra balls found the gloves of his fielders.

Jennings's season ERA's since 2003:

2003-5.11
2004-5.51
2005-5.02
2006-3.78
2007-6.45

Which one looks like the fluke?

Well
If I had any say in that 20 million to spend.  Spend about 1 million on Julio Franco because 1st base needs a veteran presence (wasn't he there for the spanish American war?).  Then take the 19 million and send it to me.

Or they could just go and use it to keep Big Donkey (great game last night error and missed tagging 2nd) and spend the 7 million to get a releiver or two since they are easy to find.

What's the budget?
I feel kinda sad for us Reds fans, reduced to weighing the merits of Paul Byrd vs. Jeff Suppan.  Since the last labor agreement was signed, baseball revenues have almost tripled, and yet the payroll has only increased at around the rate of inflation.  Why?  Where is this big commitment from ownership?  Let's sidestep the free agents for a moment and ask why we didn't go 'all in' on some of the Boras clients in the draft.  If building thru the draft is the goal, they're even doing that on the cheap.  I just want some evidence that baseball decisions come before financial ones.  They owe us that much.  Otherwise, we'll just be one of those teams who tries to catch lightning in a bottle every 5 years.

Will
Bailey and/or Cueto be in the starting rotation from opening day next year? That is a really big question as far as where you spend money I think.

by eddroush on Aug 31, 2007 5:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Very Difficult to separate the Baseball
decisions from the financial ones. They are all part of the process. The Reds are 1st. and foremost a business proposition.

"They owe us that much.  Otherwise, we'll just be one of those teams who tries to catch lightning in a bottle every 5 years." As much as I wish it were so, 'they' don't owe us anything. If you don't like the product well enough, don't go to the games, find another hobby for your fun money.
E.G
I for one hope that Dunn stays for along time. If not, then I have to decide if that's enough to drive me away from the Reds. Or will I continue to follow because of my overall passion for MLB and the Red?

Has the game started yet?

moneyball, you knew it was coming....
Seriously (or not),  spending money badly (Stanton, Milton and Cormier, for example) hurts the team more than going cheap or overpaying for a player that does produce. Krivsky is the prime example of an executive who will not jettison a losng proposition, even if the costs are sunk.

So besides hiring a bad ballplayer for too much, you're then STUCK with him (like Barry Larkin, 2001-2003), because the GM won't admit to a mistake in investment and cut him lose for a younger, potentially better, ballplayer.
So even if we overpay for Dunn (and that's not proven), we know we are getting ~ 40 HR and ~ 100 rbis every season.  He's a rock, never seriously injured (except that hand thing a couple of years ago).
We could do A LOT WORSE with the money than pick up Adam's option.

How many wins does A-Rod bring?
I'm a little bit surprised that A-Rod is the overwhelming favorite in the poll (as of 21 votes), given our glaring deficiencies in other areas. I'd keep Dunn before shelling out for Rodriguez, who will probably go for double the money.

I'd like to see Cordero here, and Linebrink. Two Brewers. What contracts do they get? Remember, David Weathers got a lot of money, so did Stanton --who was sought after by several teams after last year's solid outing. Not a lot of good pitching out there. But a Bray, Majewski, Burton, Weathers, Coutlangas, Cordero and Linebrink bullpen is formidable...and only one old guy! With some depth at AAA: McBeth (I'm not sold yet), Gosling, etc.

Would you sign Kerry Wood to a minor league contract and convert him into a setup man?

I would buy the Devil Rays
and trade Kazmir, Sheilds and Price to the reds for Stanton, Coffey and Everyday Eddie. I might throw it Carl Crawford but I would hate to see NoHo not get any playing time for the reds

As much as I hate that ALS,
he's proven to be the best value among the SS signed long-term during the winter of 2004:
  • ALS: 3 yrs/$10.25mm (OPS+ of 98, 81, 80)
  • OCab: 4/32 (82, 95, 106)
  • Renteria: 4/40, (91, 107, 131)
Hard to believe that the Angels simply non-tendered him (esp. after the glorification of his post-season role) so that they could pay an extra 22mm for marginally better production.  But I imagine he'll be much more expensive this time around, and he'll be 33 next year.  But what does Ozzie care?  He'll be gone by the time that contract ends.  Of course, I'd rather the Cards pony up to keep ALS so that they're stuck with a declining elf.

by ken on Sep 1, 2007 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I thought it was funny
that Ken Williams said that Eckstein was at the top of their wish list, then said that they would also make a play for Alex Rodriguez and Manny. Eck first, then the slugger they sorely need.

And, yes, it scares me that Ozzie will probably be available in the offseason. This is one instance where I hope the xenophobia of Cinci rears its ugly head.
