How would you spend $20 million this offseason?
Let's say the Reds do not exercise Dunn's option. That, combined with the end of Milton's contract, would free up roughly $20 million in payroll. Supposing Jay Bruce or Norris Hopper slide into LF, covering that position, how would you spend that money to improve the Reds? What positions and what players? What sort of contract?

Three things
- $20M will get you about 4 months of ARod next year. How do you pay for the rest?
- Rogers has already said he's either pitching for the Tigers or retiring. Since he'll be 44, let him.
- Jeff Weaver???? I thought you wanted to improve the team.

The money
Maybe Castellini realizes this, but maybe he's also aware of how uninviting the free agent market is. And as much as I want to see them "ante up" or "go all in" or "shoot the moon" (I don't know card lingo), I also don't want to see a Suppan or Meche-style contract. Sigh.
I'm not even sure what my point is. I think it's just frustrating that the postseason seems so close, yet it's difficult to see who can take us over the hump.

Here's the problem...
It's a lovely theory, but after the Buehrle and Zambrano extensions, there are exactly zero quality free agent starters available this offseason.
Armas, Astacio, Benson, Byrd, Chacon, Clemens (you know the drill), Clement, Colon, Elarton, Fogg, Garcia, L.Hernanadez, Jennings, Johnson, Kawakami, Lawrence, Lohse, R.Lopez, Maddux, Mays, W.Miller, Moehler, Ohka, both R.Ortizes, Park, Ponson, Schilling, Sele, Shimizu, Silva, Thomson, Tomko, Trachsel, Uehara, Wakefield, Wasdin, Jeff Weaver, K.Wells, P.Wilson, both J.Wrights, V.Zambrano, Affeldt, Chen, Estes, Fossum, Glavine, Milton, Od.Perez, Pettitte, Redman, Rogers, Rusch, Wells, Wolf
Every one of those guys is either very old, very mediocre, or has absolutely no desire to come to Cincinnati (specifically Clemens, Pettitte and Wolf, the only 3 I'd be willing to pay free agent dollars for). The market for starting pitching is historically bad. I'd rather roll the dice with one of the Japanese guys than give a long-term deal to Jason Jennings.

Right.
I have a feeling that $20 million will be teams' first offer rather than the one A-Rod winds up taking.
Exercise Dunn's option already.

I pick up Dunn's option.
Jason Jennings can't be as bad as he is this season can he? Maybe try to acquire Josh Towers or something? Just thinking out loud. Not a lot there.

I was thinking recently
by Man Mountain on Aug 31, 2007 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The answer is Yes.
Jennings is a bad pitcher who had one fluky good season that he will parlay into a big free agent contract from an idiot team hoping he can recapture the entire season of dumb luck he had last year. He didn't significantly improve his K/9, BB/9, or his G/F rate in 2006; the only thing that happened was a few extra fly balls stayed in the yard (probably due to the humidor), and a few extra balls found the gloves of his fielders.
Jennings's season ERA's since 2003:
2003-5.11
2004-5.51
2005-5.02
2006-3.78
2007-6.45
Which one looks like the fluke?

Well
Or they could just go and use it to keep Big Donkey (great game last night error and missed tagging 2nd) and spend the 7 million to get a releiver or two since they are easy to find.

Very Difficult to separate the Baseball
"They owe us that much. Otherwise, we'll just be one of those teams who tries to catch lightning in a bottle every 5 years." As much as I wish it were so, 'they' don't owe us anything. If you don't like the product well enough, don't go to the games, find another hobby for your fun money.
E.G
I for one hope that Dunn stays for along time. If not, then I have to decide if that's enough to drive me away from the Reds. Or will I continue to follow because of my overall passion for MLB and the Red?

moneyball, you knew it was coming....
So besides hiring a bad ballplayer for too much, you're then STUCK with him (like Barry Larkin, 2001-2003), because the GM won't admit to a mistake in investment and cut him lose for a younger, potentially better, ballplayer.
So even if we overpay for Dunn (and that's not proven), we know we are getting ~ 40 HR and ~ 100 rbis every season. He's a rock, never seriously injured (except that hand thing a couple of years ago).
We could do A LOT WORSE with the money than pick up Adam's option.

How many wins does A-Rod bring?
I'd like to see Cordero here, and Linebrink. Two Brewers. What contracts do they get? Remember, David Weathers got a lot of money, so did Stanton --who was sought after by several teams after last year's solid outing. Not a lot of good pitching out there. But a Bray, Majewski, Burton, Weathers, Coutlangas, Cordero and Linebrink bullpen is formidable...and only one old guy! With some depth at AAA: McBeth (I'm not sold yet), Gosling, etc.
Would you sign Kerry Wood to a minor league contract and convert him into a setup man?

As much as I hate that ALS,
- ALS: 3 yrs/$10.25mm (OPS+ of 98, 81, 80)
- OCab: 4/32 (82, 95, 106)
- Renteria: 4/40, (91, 107, 131)

And, yes, it scares me that Ozzie will probably be available in the offseason. This is one instance where I hope the xenophobia of Cinci rears its ugly head.
