Red's V Pirates

Red's linupe via Rosecrans

Hamilton cf
Gonzalez ss
Griffey rf
Phillips 2b
Dunn lf
Valentin c
Hatteberg 1b
Encarnacion 3b
Belisle p

This is a giant WTF lineup.  Gonsalez should bat 8th, Encarnacion 6th, Valentin 7th, and Hatteberg 2nd.  Hopfully Belisle will be ontop of his game again.  I went to his first start, a bitter cold night against the Pirates.  He gave up 1 run in 6 innings.  Somthing like that would be good.

This is basically the same lineup
That did pretty well over the past couple of weeks, except that Sea Bass is in for Keppinger (and who could argue with that, given the way Sea Bass has been playing the last couple of games).

I have given up advocating that Dunn and Griffey bat next to each other.  That is a hopeless cause.

Oh shit. I'm called out.
It all started Monday when I went to Cleveland for a Indians game instead of posting my diary hyping "600+ Comment Night."

Then, I saw that this afternoon was going to be the only time that I could take my boys to the Millersport Sweet Corn Festival and I idn't know if I'd be back in time for the first innings of the game.

And, with Boobs out playing Sal Paradise, Slyde on another hiatus, and Man Mountain presumably preoccupied with purple and gold tigers tonight, and 'Than madder than a wet hen at us, I thought I might unofficially postpone "600+ Comment Night."

That doesn't mean this cannot be a dry run.  (Although with my wife in Albany for business, I'm pretty busy until Tommy goes down at 9.  That, and I'm also interested in those purple and gold tigers.  My apologies to the Belisle family.)

I apologize if I left ya hangin'.

I know a lot of people hate the idea of Dunn playing 1st base, but it's worth a shot.  People say that he doesn't want to play there or that he sucks in the OF so he would suck at 1st base; but I just can't see any harm in trying it out for a few weeks.  Especially with all the talk that Votto isn't well-liked by the higher ups. It would free up a spot in the outfield and who knows, maybe he would blossom at 1st base. He's not a stupid person, he was recruited as a quarterback.  So I say give it a shot.

I honestly don't know how long it was.  But I don't remember it being for much more than a few games here and there.  I would just like to see him given a legitimate shot.  I'm also not against trying Griffey there, although I realize it might be hard to persuade Griffey to do that.

Granted...
...thats a lot more than I thought it would be, haha.  I guess my point is to just try some new things.  Instead of complaining about Dunn every year and threatening to trade him, why not make him the everyday 1st baseman for awhile.  I don't know, maybe I just put too much faith in Dunn's abilities.

by krousee22 on Aug 30, 2007 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Just at a glance
Pujols had 5 errors in his first season as 1st baseman.  He played in 42 games.  Dunn had 6 errors in his first season at 1st base, and he appeared in 44 games. It isn't much of a sample size, but I digress...Given an everyday chance, he may improve at 1st

And it is a good point. I think player morale does a lot to a team. However, Dunn doesn't run the team.  Petey does (sigh).  Nevertheless, the manager should make the decisions, whether those decisions are well-informed or not, is debatable.

Not sure what this is.

Still talking. Nady's ready, Belisle's ready. I think maybe they're gonna take the run away, that Griffey hadn't scored before Dunn crossed third. It could be 1-0. Yep, Wally Bell called in. It doesn't count because of the force play. 1-0 Pirates. Two runs cross the plate, no runs score.

One thing I keep noticing
throughout all of the nice camera shots are all of the empty seats. Field level seats. On a Friday night. On one of the busiest baseball weekends of the year.

How do they keep a team again?

I've heard different things about this.
Meatloaf has said that he's talked with Phil about the song, and that Phil was fully aware and on board with its theme.  Who knows.

BTW, I saw this at BTF shortly after Rizzuto died.  Almost pissed my pants.

Looking to kill a few hours, several players and writers decided to take in the popular X-rated movie of the day. Phil Rizzuto was invited to join the group.

"Oh, no," said The Scooter. "I can't be seen at something like that."

Off we went, Scooterless, to the theater. We were sitting in the dark for about an hour when, on the screen, flashed a particularly ribald scene. Suddenly, from the back of the silent theater, a familiar shriek was heard.

"Holy Cow!"

"Two Dunn's enter, but only one Dunn will leave...unless neither do because they decide to play cards, drink beer, golf, and fish."--SlydeFrog

by Man Mountain on Aug 31, 2007 1:48 AM EDT up reply actions

No way
Jeter's defense is overrated, but it's still good.  He's been above average the past three years.  (Maybe A-Rod's presence is letting him cheat to left?) His range isn't spectacular but he's got a good arm.  If he gets to the ball, he can handle it.  The problem is that he doesn't always get to the ball, especially if it's to his left.

He's an excellent baserunner, with both speed and smarts on the basepaths.

Phelps has a huge hole in his glove.  He misses even the balls that go right to him.  I'd say he throws like a girl, but I know a lot of girls who throw better than he does.  ;-)

And he's not particularly speedy or smart on the basepaths, either.

I think if he'd been even average at anything else, they'd have tried to keep him because of the way he hits, but he was just too much a liability.  They couldn't do it.

BTW, Phelps' OPS since he went to the Bucs is 1.346.  o_O

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Aug 31, 2007 7:08 AM EDT up reply actions

The good book
Bill James wrote an essay in the Fielding Bible about Jeter's defense.  The essay is now a couple of year's old and so it predates most of Jeter's fielding "renaissance."  James compares Adam Everett with Jeter, first by the numbers and then by video, to see what separates them.  IIRC, James found that Jeter's shallow positioning prevented him from reaching a lot of hard hit GB and LD.  You'd think that a strong arm would allow him to play deeper.

by ken on Aug 31, 2007 7:22 AM EDT up reply actions

Interesting
Maybe no one ever told him that when he was younger, and now he's set in his ways.

I've heard Jeter was very raw when he first came up.  They had to teach him the basics (how to catch a ball, etc.).

It may be different now, but the Yankees' farm system had a reputation for only teaching players how to hit.  They just didn't care about the rest. Players would come up to the big club without the fundamentals you'd think a player at that stage would know.  (Baserunning, bunting, fielding, etc.)

All Things Bubba: Because how can you not love a baseball player named Bubba?

by BubbaFan on Aug 31, 2007 7:45 AM EDT up reply actions

I was only kidding about Jeter
He is terribly overrated defensively, but that's not his fault.

from Reds.com
The 30-30 club: 30 home runs and 30 stolen bases in a season.

Phillips, who entered Thursday with 26 homers and 25 steals with 29 games remaining, preferred not to dwell on it.

"The more y'all keep on coming up to me, the more I think about it," said Phillips, who hit a solo homer in Wednesday's 8-0 win. "My goal was to be 20-20 this year. I achieved the goal. And then [Ken Griffey Jr. said], 'Since you reached your goal, you might as well shoot higher.' It'd be nice to be in that category with Barry Larkin and Eric Davis. It would be a good accomplishment."

Davis (1987) and Larkin (1996) are the only Cincinnati players in the 30-30 club. The only other Reds second baseman to produce at least 25 homers and 25 steals was Hall of Famer Joe Morgan in 1973 and 1976.

For all the poor souls following this on Gameday or a reasonable facsimile, Brandon Phillips made the most incredible play I've seen a 2nd baseman make in a LONG TIME.
Blooper over his head, he pursues, backhands the ball, pivots and throws off-balance to Valentin, who tags out the tying run at home plate to end the game.

AND THIS ONE BELONGS TO BRANDON!!!

Just wow, man.

Sorry to nitpick..
..but I think that BP did somehow manage (with the help of an awkward stutter step) to get his feet planted so I might not call the throw "off balance."

But I would still call it "Just wow, man."

Neither can hold Brett Boone's jock.
J/k.  Utley is a good defender, very steady.  But I'm with you about BP.

See my comment above about Hudson.  He's won two straight GGs, the most recent with Arizona.  Always difficult to beat incumbents.

It's a brand new year
Dunn's having one of the best years of his life, plus he's got a healthy Griffey (and Phillips and Hamilton) to help him with the offensive load.  I'm making a bold prediction and saying that Dunn will have a good September and finish ahead of Howard in the dingers column.

I LOVE REDS BASEBALL
Ya know, after all the dust has settled on the controversy surrounding Krivsky, Mackanin, Dunn, etc, everyone one of us will still be watching Reds Baseball.  Every year they tease us with winning streaks, walk-offs, and 2-hit shutouts.  They give us hope that we might once again see a sweep of some "unbeatable" American league team.  Sure, its hard to sit through some of the decisions made by the front office, but when its all said and done, we love the Cincinnati Reds. We love to see those Red Caps bobbing up and down on their way out to the field. We love to hear Marty say, "...and this game is under way" and of course "and this one belongs to the Reds."  So yes, it has been a while since we've seen a postseason in Cincinnati. But, its nights like these when we can all step back and thank the baseball Gods for this great game.  We can go to bed and dream of the next Big Red Machine. Brandon Phillips was the hero tonight. Who knows who it will be tomorrow. It really doesn't matter, because we get to watch the CINCINNATI REDS play baseball again tomorrow.  And that, my friends, is a wonderful thing.

You know what?
The Reds won six in a row and then Harang bitchslapped the doubleheader losses with a two fucking hitter and then BP turned that awesome fist pumping play to preserve a win in an otherwise sloppy and indifferent game...

I'm not predicting a run at the Brewers and Cubs but maybejustmaybe something special is about to happen with this team.

Howabout Harang no-hitting the Giants on the road trip?

Griffey getting hothothot and getting to 599 for the season-ending series against the Cubs?

Saw the Phillips play on SC
interspersed between multiple takes of Brandon Lafell's pointless helmet 2 helmet hit of poor Zach Smith. Both gave me an erection. I would tell you which one was bigger, but I got photos, so I'll just post those tomorrow (with an explanation of the penis tatoos).

"What a deke job by Valentin!"
Since I missed it last night, I watched the video of the play on mlb.com.  It truly was spectacular, only they didn't show Phillips throughout the whole thing.  Not even a reaction shot afterwards.

I just wanted to give some props to Javy too.  The announcers said he deked the runner, which he may or may not have done, but at the very least he handled the awkward throw very well and got a nice tag on the runner, who probably would have been safe if he'd slid.

But no one expects a throw like that from the second baseman.
