Win streak or not, Pete Mackanin is a douche.

Game one of the doubleheader's line-up:

Hopper cf
Keppinger ss
Griffey rf
Phillips 2b
Cantu 1b
Encarnacion 3b
Valentin c
Ellison lf
Ramirez p

Pete said Gonzalez, Ross and Dunn will be playing the second game.

Dunn sits for Jason Ellison for the second time in a week and evidently Hamilton will be sitting both games. Yes, Dunn and Hamilton are both significantly worse against lefties. AND THEY'RE STILL WAY FUCKING BETTER THAN JASON ELLISON IS AGAINST ANYONE.

aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh I fucking hate idiot managers.

Bleh.
I can maybe, maaaybe understand sitting Dunn or Hamilton for a game in a double header. But barring injury - Hopper and Ellison should never. ever. start the same game.

I kinda was planning on watching this game, too.

We'll be okay
As long as Keppinger remembers to say "SHAZAM!" before the game.  Then he is assured of going 4-5 with three runs scored.  Ellison just makes everyone else say "Shazbot."

Double think the double header
You seem upset.

Would you like a warm drink and a few mushrooms?

Yes, it's true. Pete seems as obsessed with the righty-lefty thing as the gone but not forgotten Jerry Narrooon.  It's nuts. Pete did say the other day that he would play Griffey in one game and Dunn in the other, and it makes sense that Griffey plays agains the better lefty, Gorzelan-whatever. But still.

I would have started Hamilton in center and NoHo in left, and batted Hamilton like, 7th? Or Kepp in left, NoHo in center, and Gonzalez at SS.

Ellison will be a dead spot in the line-up; no power, no pop, not even good defense. Dumb.

As old Joe Nuxhall used to say,"You can't win two until you win the first one."  Managers seem to have forgotten how to approach double-headers.

Ross is back?
So, David Ross has been activated from the DL?  Who got demoted?

Norris Hopper is hitting .381/.416/.476 against LHP in his brief career, so I can live with him in the lineup against lefties from time to time.  But Jason Ellison?  Would someone please explain to me why this guy is on the team at all?

Free Joey Votto!

by ucclark on Aug 28, 2007 2:53 PM EDT reply actions

As much as I hate to admit it
Hopper has earned the right to start vs. LHP, at least until he cools down.

But Jason Ellison has no business touching a major league roster. His OPS just barely eclipses .500. His OPS vs. lefties this year is lower than Dunn's OBP vs. lefties. In his best season ever, he had an OPS+ of 79. Oh, and he's 29 years old. Why the fuck is this guy on this team? I hate Wayne Krivsky for putting him on the team and I hate Pete Mackanin for using him.

That is a crummy lineup
The way I see it, our season comes down to the next two weeks.  The Reds have to dominate during the next two weeks to even have a chance to be in this race.  If they play .500 ball or worse, than the season is over.

With that said, the stars on this team SHOULD NEVER SIT!!  I don't care about righty/lefty.  I don't care about match-ups.  This is crunch time.  Sabermetrics aside, there are times when you throw stats out the window and this is one of those times.

DUNN and GRIFFEY and HAMILTON can rest in a month (or maybe a month and a half).  They need to play every game until we're out of it.

And one more thing.... Pete!  We don't need Jason Ellison to stay fresh and we NEVER WILL!!!

Why wouldn't he just say Hamilton was starting?
I know you're in one of your super fun go-off-on-anyone-who-isn't-constantly-optimistic-about-everything moods, but with a lefty going in the second game and the fact that Mackanin specifically stated that three other players not starting in game one would be starting in game two, I think that there is absolutely no problem with making that assumption, even if it does end up being wrong.

Besides, the overall awfulness of the game makes any outrage perfectly reasonable.

Resting Dunn
I'm too lazy to track it down, but there was some mention today about how they're trying to rest Dunn more this year v. last when he tanked at the end of the season.

by pw on Aug 28, 2007 3:32 PM EDT reply actions

It's true he can't tank when he's on the bench
But he can't hit home runs either.  Purely anecdotely, it seems like Dunn has sat a lot more this year than last year.  I appreciate that just because he can play 160 games a year doesn't mean he should, but he's as hot right now as he's been all season.  Seems to be an inopportune time to sit him.

Serious Ellison question
Ellison was sold as a guy who could come in as a late inning defensive replacement and play in a pinch. (Neither he's really suited to do well, as we know, but whatever).

My question: Why did Krivsky pick up waiver wire trash instead of promoting Chris Dickerson? Dickerson is on the 40 man, quick, and an adequate outfielder from everything I've read. (He seemed fine both times I saw him, fwiw). He's also probably eager to prove himself at the major league level.

There's probably a sound management reason for this, but I can't quite figure out what it is.

Pete definitely pooped in the fridge with this lineup.  And it's not amazing and I am mad.

by buckeye22fox on Aug 28, 2007 4:07 PM EDT reply actions

The pros of baseball know better than thee...
Ellison is a righty, Dickerson is a lefty. Isn't that obvious?  :)

Promoting Dickerson leaves a whole in the outfield at Louisville, which would then leave a whole in the outfield at Chattanooga, etc., etc.  Wayner and his staff would have to make all kinds of paperwork and stuff to re-arrange the deck chairs.

All that said, Dickerson is a better outfielder. Period. Full stop. If all they wanted was a guy to run around and catch balls and be a late inning replacement, then that SHOULD have been the move (promote Dickerson).
But Wayner and the 'pros' like him that run baseball teams are always looking two levels deeper than us dumb 'fans'.
Spot starts. Right-lefty switches. Clever stuff like that.
So that's why we get a guy who has no business playing regularly with any team in the Majors, starting in left field in a crucial game going into the last full month of the season. The Pros.
There are ML baseball executives (like Mark Shapiro, who is a sabremetrics guy, I betcha) who would not make a move like getting Ellison, but still, ours did.
It's the same kind of thinking that has Juan Castro pinch hitting for Josh Hamilton. And that sort of thinking, whether it's Jim Bowden, Carl Linder, Bob Boone, Dave Miley, Jerry Narron, Wayne Krivsky, or Pete Mackanin, keeps the Reds a losing team for what, 7 straight seasons?
The Pros who run baseball teams. Right.

So if Jason Ellison goes 3 for 4 tonight and drives in the winning run, boy, does Wayner look smart. Don't hold your breath.

Benefit of the doubt
Am I the only one here who thinks that a manager that took a .375 team and has them playing .600 ball deserves the benefit of the doubt? I don't love seeing Ellison in there anymore than the next guy. But for the time being, at least, Mackanin has earned grudging silence when it comes to his lineups.

by dcdanny on Aug 28, 2007 4:31 PM EDT reply actions

Okay, but...
Ellison looks a lot more like the .375 guys (Castro, Moeller), and a lot less like the .600 guys on the bench (Dunn, Hamilton).  With this lineup, Mackanin is taking us back to a bad place, a place where we want to tell Castellini and Krivsky when they're searching for a manager in the offseason, "Any Which Way But Loose."

by Brendanukkah on Aug 28, 2007 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions

i guess it's this
see, dunn is going to play one game and griffey the other, so there's one spot in the outfield already covered. for the other two, you have hamilton, hopper, ellison, and keppinger (alex is playing second game, so i bet kepp gets a start in right).  so you have two guys in hamilton and kepp that should be playing opposite games in outfield, but you have your two weakest guys starting in one game instead of going:

ellison, hamilton, griffey
dunn, hopper, keppinger

it's just that hopper and ellison are both in the starting lineup at the same time.  i mean, ellison shouldn't start at all, but since its a dh, it's bound to happen.

at least we'll have big bats on the bench in both games.  and hey, ellison can't pinch hit in game one!

by Daedalus on Aug 28, 2007 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions

Hopper
I'll give you Ellison. But Hopper is hitting .333 against lefties. I'll take that any day. He's not going to bop one out, but I'll take 2 bunt hits from him any day. I don't see the source of hostility toward him.

And as for Hamilton, the fact is he's been TERRIBLE against lefties--a .620 OPS. Now, I imagine a large part of that is the fact that he never gets to play against them and so he's not comfortable with that matchup yet. But let's solve that next year. Today, I say, go with Hopper.

But Ellison, I'll grant you. what I wouldn't give for a sharp-hitting right-handed OF.

Yes,dcdanny, you are the only one.
This series separates the winners from the losers, the amateurs from the pros, the men from the boys, the dogs from the cats....Pete may get lucky. He is sticking to his 'everybody has a role' approach, but he should be thinking a little outside the box. The possibility of winning 2 with Dunn and Hobbs on the bench and Ellison even on the team drops dramatically.

Hey, SS2...
..Check this out.

From the OPS diary:

Here's a scale, so that next time one of our resident saber-dorks references OPS, you'll know if it's Pujolsian, or more NeifiPerezian:

.700: Mendoza Line
.750: Mediocre
.775: Average
.800: Above Average
.900: All-Star
1.000: MVP Contender

OPS, SS2.  It's the future.  Now.

Simple stat, really
just your on base percentage PLUS your slugging percentage

It's a good measure for how effective a batter you are. An OPS of about .700 is the mendoza line.

You need the big fly there, and 1B is about the only place Dunn can go in unless you get to Ellison.  Which, of course, after sending Hatteberg, EE and Valentin up, you probably won't.
