Bobby Livingston out

Bobby Livingston has a torn labrum in his pitching shoulder and has been put on the DL. Coffey has been recalled from Louisville.

I think a torn labrum is pretty serious, no? I think this means no Bobby Livingston in the rotation next year. Also, why in the world are we calling up Coffey and not McBeth or Cooter? Every time I think about defending Wayne as a decent GM or begin to think he is learning from his mistakes he does something stupid.

I hope not Dumatrait again.  He clearly wasn't ready.  Homer is probably 2 weeks off.  Only true options left will be Maloney or Cueto, unless they have Gosling or Saarlos make starts.

The Double Header Tuesday will complicate things.

livingston isnt a terrible loss
though this certainly isnt good.  i had high hopes for him come next year.  i guess its a good thing we have alot of 5th starter types.  the coffey call-up is just one more in a long string of misses in bullpen construction for wayner.

and no fernando cabrera.  i dont know if we've discussed this yet, but wayner not getting this guy is beyond me.

by Charlie Scrabbles on Aug 24, 2007 5:34 PM EDT reply actions

I disagree Charlie
BL get us in most of the games he pitched, Strange as that may seem, and with the new and improved Bullpen that's really all a number 4 or 5 pitcher needs to do. Who else do we got that is consistently keeping us in the game and keeping it close? Not Phil, or Belizzle....Gosling - don't think so. Livingston was doing his job pretty well.
Has the game started yet?

by Madville on Aug 24, 2007 10:46 PM EDT up reply actions

no no i agree with you
livingston was the best we had in the back end of the rotation.  dumatrait and belisle we not as good.  but i think the lizard could end up being comparable next year though.  we certainly are worse without him, but i dont think it will be that difficult to replace him.  heres hoping a little rest and a cortizone shot is all it takes to get back and throwing.

That's not good news.

If conservative therapy or surgery works, he could be back next year.  The problem is it doesn't always work.

this is bad
Of the 36 major-league hurlers diagnosed with labrum tears in the last five years, only midlevel reliever Rocky Biddle has returned to his previous level.

by Daedalus on Aug 24, 2007 5:41 PM EDT up reply actions

well...
...it is an older article (2004).  Maybe they've improved their treatments since then?

It does seem like labrum tears are more easily repaired in athletes who are not pitchers.  Drew Brees had a labrum tear, didn't he?  But a quarterback doesn't throw as much or as hard as a pitcher.

Ouch
Here are some more details from Fay:

Bobby Livingston today went on the 15-day disabled list with a torn in the labrum of his left shoulder. He'll be checked out in 10 days to decide if he needs surgery.

...

The odd thing is he felt fine in his last start. He played long toss the day after.

"I woke up the next day and couldn't lift my arm," he said.

If he needs surgery, it would probably mean missing all of the next season.

Yikes, that's awful.  I feel really bad for the guy.

I agree that Livingston was no ace, and was certainly overrated by Marty et al., but he had a shot to be a solid #4 guy with his control skills over the next year or 2.  And that's certainly valuable enough to make this a significant blow.

Hopefully somehow it will not require surgery...though one has to think that's a long shot.

The mind of Wayne is a perilous place...
Gosling will start in his place in the rotation. I am almost sure of that at this point.

Actually, Gosling's numbers in AAA were better than Livingston's and he has a little more velocity on his fastball.

But it is a crappy break for a scrappy guy. Really, I wouldn't wish that kind of injury on anybody. Livingston is  tough competitor and has a good head on his shoulders, with regards to getting the most out of his talent. Scrappy.

And why Coffey is back up is anybody's guess.  Maybe his slider is better. Heh, to all that, I guess. Where is McBeth? I thought this might be a 40 man roster thing, but crap no. The only thing I can think of is that

  1. Krivsky is TRYING to make Macarena look bad
  2. This is absolutely, positively Coffey's last chance.  And I mean it this time.
Oh, and I agree. Ellison sucks gas.

Look at his WHIP.

Wickman
From what I've heard, the Braves' front office have been split over Wickman since the beginning of the season. There's a contingent that have been waiting for him to play himself out of a job. It probably should have happened 2 months ago, but I think Dunn's walkoff to cap a 3 game losing streak in August was the exclamation point they needed to pull the trigger.

He had a good half season with the Braves last year, but he's reverted back into his 1.40+ WHIP. He shouldn't be a closer for a contending team.
